Gunmen Kidnap Governor of Iraqi Province
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Gunmen kidnapped the governor of Iraq's western Anbar province Tuesday and told his family he would be released when U.S. forces withdraw from Qaim, the site of a major offensive against followers of Iraq's most-wanted militant, relatives said.
Gov. Raja Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi was seized as he drove from Qaim to the provincial capital of Ramadi, his brother, Hammad, told The Associated Press.
The kidnappers later called the family and said they were holding the governor until U.S. forces pull out of the Syrian border town about 200 miles west of Baghdad, Hammad Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi said.
U.S. forces are conducting one of their largest offensives in six months in the remote desert region, believed to be a haven for followers of militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Wipe them out... all of them.
Easy for me to say, but let's hope no deals are done.
I keep saying it: Give Iraq foreign fighters and insurgents a warm reception.
Bring back napalm and flamethrowers.
But does anyone listen to me? Noooooooooooooo.
You would think a governer would travel with protection.
This is bringing back such horrid memories for me of Viet Nam. The way it was NOT fought, that cost us so much in lives, money and finally the war. Playing politics, playing Mr. Nice Guy, has no place in a war. It needs to get real ugly for these terrorists and the people that hide them, feed them even if they are Iraqis.
We are not in Iraq for a country club social event.
Looks like we hit a nerve with our action in this area.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning!
That is so 1970s. MOABS, more bang for the buck.
Why do so many people in the U.S. government refuse to believe that many people in this world are simply destined to live under totalitarian regimes?
My thoughts exactly. We must be getting close to Zarqawi.
Don't you wonder what the Syrians would have waiting for our ops?
Hmmm, I thought the jihadis were saying on their websites that victory was theirs, and they were slaying the infidels and chasing them out of Qaim.
Guess not.
They've resorted to kidnapping people to try to get us to leave Qaim. That's not a position of strength. That's an act of desperation.
Exactly.
Agree completely. We saw what happened in Mogadishu when 'political considerations (the need to maintain a low profile)' caused Mr. Willie--of course he let Les Aspin take the fall--to say 'no' to armor for the Rangers.
Saturation bombing by B-52s, lots of iron bombs, Syrian border or not: the NVA respected it more than any other weapon and it got the Taliban's attention in Afghanistan.
Get `er done.
We definitely stirred up the vermin in that area - hope we will get someone big like Zarqawi.... nice to get all the little vermin but it would be so much better to knock a big hole out of the insurgency funding and direction.
exactly. . .
What are booby traps, kidnapping, and carbombs if they are NOT acts of desperation? The very existence of these types of attacks are direct proof that that the coalition has an unmistakable presence and an unmatched striking ability.
I think the Pentagon should publish the identities of all of the foreign fighters it has vanquished and put it all on the table for the world to see.
