PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady arrived in the Netherlands, today, on the first leg of their four-day visit to eastern Europe, Russia and the Republic of Georgia. The main focus of the visit is to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat.
According to the Associated Press, President Bush "second-guessed Franklin D. Roosevelt," when he said Saturday that the United States played a role in Europe's painful division after World War II. The President said it was a decision that helped cause "one of the greatest wrongs of history" when the Soviet Union imposed its harsh rule across Central and Eastern Europe.
President Bush said the lessons of the past will not be forgotten as the United States tries to spread freedom in the Middle East.
The President spent the day with the leaders of three Baltic republics, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Many in the Baltic countries are still bitter about the Soviet annexation of their countries and the harsh occupation that followed the war for nearly 50 years. Acknowledging that anger and frustration still linger, Bush said that "we have a great opportunity to move beyond the past." His message here, and throughout his trip, is that the world is entering a new phase of freedom and all countries should get on board.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: "We will not repeat the mistakes of other generations, appeasing or excusing tyranny, and sacrificing freedom in the vain pursuit of stability," the president said. "We have learned our lesson; no one's liberty is expendable. In the long run, our security and true stability depend on the freedom of others." President George W. Bush in a speech in Riga, Latvia.
LOL, That's definitely a "different" toaster :-)
Not-so-minor point in this photograph:
The Latvian Army standard service rifle is the US M16-A2.
That's a deliberate nose-thumbing at their largest neighbor whom they were under satellite control of for most of last century.
That's not a gun nut observation; it's of geopolitical significance.
Do you still have that cutout of Dubya your wife got you?
Good evening Mystery
Hello Hoosierkitties.
Hi snugs....has everything calm down since the election?
By the way I think that Leo does favour his father which is a blessing LOL
NICE!!!! Yippie...can I sell the toast on ebay??
Thank you for my toaster Snugs!!!!
I saw some of those Brit Bashing threads, What a shame. The UK is our most treasured friend and nobody, or no Nation, will ever come between us. Our Declaration of Independence from Great Britain brought about a war between us. In the end, that war brought us together as two cultures divided, but time has shown we will never be separated. The entire world has been shaped by the alliance between our two Nations and I will always consider my friends from across the Pond as my brothers and sisters
WOW....look at the way Dubya is looking at Laura in #5..first pick....OWF would love that pic...I sure do!
My pleasure glad to include someone else in the joke.
In my heart, I still cannot believe that we have a President so bold, so couageous, so truthful and so wonderously 'direct speak' oriented, a President who understands in his HEART that freedom is etched upon the hearts of mankind, not just those lucky enough like you or I to have been born into a free society.
He just gets it.
And I just love him for it and I always will.
His remarks to today were so perfect today I was riveted...his sensitivity to place, to the need to be gracious, to invoke humor and to answer questions with direct answers...not that horrific clintonian mush that liberals relate so well to because they depend upon popularity instead of conviction.
President Bush ALWAYS actually takes a stand...and he ALWAYS maintains his awe of the office he holds even as he USES the power it lends to MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE................FOR REAL!
I love the quotes you included in today's thread.
And thanks so much for the pics...........I love our President.
I love the look! I LOVE the look!! Oofta!!
(THANKS, Wolfstar! Prayers for the President's and First Lady's safety!)
that pic is forever titled *The Look*...I love it!
