A St. Paul Police officer was shot several times and killed around 2:20 a.m. this morning near 7th St. and Forest Ave. on St. Paul's East Side.

Two suspects are on the loose.

The dead officer has been identified as Sgt. Gerald Vick, 41, Chief John Harrington told reporters this morning.

Officers performed CPR on Vick on the scene, but Vick died as he was being taken to the hospital, Harrington explained.

Throngs of police are combing the neighborhood looking for two suspects. A mile-and-a-half perimeter has been set up around the alley where the shooting happened.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Ramsey County Sheriff, and other police departments are assisting in the search.

The suspects are described as two black males, both between the ages of 25 and 30.

The first suspect is described as five feet seven inches tall, wearing a white shirt and dark pants with a white strip down the side.

One of the local talk radio hosts (Bob Davis) You should hear some of the callers, slamming the cops, for reacting like they have. SOME people really need to get a clue.

They've taken into custody some people but can't/won't say if they've got the killers.
