Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

Rush also advised "Christians" who are wound up too tight about this to "chill."

I generally don't look to Rush Limbaugh for moral guidance.

I saw Lynne Cheney laughing!

I am sure all those mentioned in Laura's remarks were laughing the loudest. The people not mentioned were probably wishing that they were also mentioned. I thought that her remarks were great.

Hmmmmm...............I have learned which "Christians" to trust, and which to avoid.

I didn't see what mr yellowdog said about me in particular, but I have seen enough of his posts to know that just makes things up out of whole cloth, so qualifies as one to avoid.

And thanks for your kind words, Ella. I much appreciate them. :o)

Too late. It's not going to work. Truthfully, that's what scared me the most! The two of you where part of the group that kept me sane (and calm) during the last election.

My husband has been daring me to post for years. I think so he doesn't have to listen to the post I would make if I actually posted. Boy will he be relieved when I tell him.

So here I sit, a pitiful little newbie, refreshing and hoping that someone notices me!

So, thanks for the kind words.

The great thing about the "Lady" is that all of her jokes were "just funnin'".

Now let's think about Jay Leno and the Clinton jokes!! (Now imagine having Hillary telling ANY of the jokes that Mrs. Bush told. No one would be laughing.) And there is the difference between good people and bad people!!

LOL! Now you stepped in it. ;O)

Seriously, I'm with you on that. Also, I love how "Christians" was in quotes, as if to imply, "so-called."

Sigh. I'd just hate to see us take the most effective tool we have (humor) out of our arsenal. But maybe it's just me.

I agree with your entire post, I will also repost something I said in a different thread but along the same subject matter (Laura Bush's "routine" on Saturday night), that if we can't learn to laugh at ourselves, we'll never find anything in life funny at all.

I thought that her remarks were great.

That's because you have a sense of humor.

The rest of us are told constantly that we aren't Christian enough. Or conservative enough. You know the drill.

They show up like clockwork to complain and wring their hands. In reality, they are the most fake Christians you'll ever meet.

You are getting more unreal with every statement you make. Do you really think that Laura does not spend quality time with her family?

You mean the First Lady can not have a sense of humor? Why are some people so worked up over a joke that has been around for many, many years? That is how some people in the country made fun of some of the newcomers who did not have a clue as to what farming was all about. I thought it was funny when I first heard it as a kid and still do.

I think the outrage over this joke is beyond absurdity this joke is a well known old joke here in Britain anyone who has had anything to do with farm or farmers knows it and it has no sexual connotations whatsoever.
