Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

The Bush family did not achieve the degree of success they had by accident. Laura Bush's bawdy humor was essentially communicating a message: that the Administration is really not made up of "unnuanced" people from flyover country, for all its past catering to the conservative base. There are goals in foreign policy, tax reform, and Social Security the Administration wants to achieve. To achieve these goals, they need the support of RINOs and Democrats. They also need the support of corporate donors and lobbyists, who by and large despise ideological conservatives, especially the Christian Right.

Even Reagan made compromises, for instance, with Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill not to push social spending cuts in order to promote a military build up. Laura Bush's speech was meant to communicate the Bush Administration's willingness to compromise.

The Bushes do not deserve to be made into idols as John and Jacqueline Kennedy were. No political figure or family deserves such adulation.

But probably not.

That's the problem here.

Some of us have minds that aren't as dirty as the moral 'purists' here........

Ironic, no?

btw, your image of the President on the stool is exactly the image I had when Laura told the joke. The idea that it was about bestiality is beyond absurd.......

This thread has degenerated into a cesspool against the First Lady.

These people are just looking for ANYTHING to trash any of the Bushes with.

Coming from a semi rural area in Britain the cow/horse joke in various forms is so familar that it is laughable that anyone could be offended by it.

At the time I did wince at the Chippendale's one but on retrospect it was just a funny joke which was all the more funny because it was out of character and something that just would not happen. In other words a swipe at the MSM and their prejudices.

Well, evidently some of these posters go to some denomination that likes to make mountains out of mole hills. :-)

They do seem to have a 'Jimmy Swaggert' tone to their rants.

Just remember that you can't win without us.....us crazy Christians.

I don't think Reagan had any problem with us in the party...as a matter of fact, he agreed with us.

That's what being a conservative is all about, right?

I'll tell you what being a conservative ISN'T: it isn't about calling a wonderful woman a whore.

That's very telling about you.

I thought it was one of those "City slicker comes to the farm" jokes. Was I wrong?

Nope, and I'm originally a city slicker and knew this joke when I still lived inth city more than 20 years ago.

Even my grandfather, who had very strict standards wehn it came to ladies and things said in polite company was not offended by that joke.....when it was told in mixed company.

Why not jokes, then, about the president's sexual performance in bed? What's next? Only a whore would talk this way in public.

Rolling eye more

Oh please .. talking about crossing the line

You just did it!!

The joke was subtly told, and it's funny because it's a preposterous scenario, not because it's dirty. Any act you imagine as dirty was not in the telling, but in your head.

Unfortunately explaining an art like humor to the comedically constipated leaves the rest of us feeling strained just from trying to assist. Hope you get it worked out, I'm done.

Whom did I call that?

You're being very free and easy with accusations there.

I await your apology.

It was 10 oclock at night for goodness sake here in Britain we have what we call the watershed which is 9.00 oclock I am certain there must be something similar in the States so to say about 4 year old is just stupid they should not be up that time anyway.
