Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

If that joke was cool, then so was Whoopi's about the bush.
I have a very keen sense of right and wrong, and a strong sensitivity to language and innuendo, but I understood the humor of what she was doing.......because of who she IS, and the quality of her marriage and her person.
We got a glimpse into the teasing, fun-loving quality of their marriage, and I thought it was great.
This truly is much ado about nothing.
wonder if you'd be screaming so loud if it were Bill and Billary!
99% of all male horses on ranches are GELDINGS. NO TESTICLES. NO SEXUAL RESPONSE WHATSOEVER.
When you have to clean a gelding's sheath (I won't go into gory detail because you might have a fainting spell) all he does is PEE on you.
I have known you on this forum for a long time. I know you are sincerely disappointed.
I, however, am not.
Just as I am not going to go on and on about how great she was, I think it behooves those who didn't like the jokes to drop it.
She likely will never speak at another press dinner. The jokes are over and done with.
Just as I was disappointed by the president signing CFR, you are just going to have to be disappointed with these jokes. Look at all the positive things that she has done, anad simply forgive her for not living up to your expectations this one time.
But for goodness sake, don't be aligning yourself with people who call her a "whore."
Wow are there Photos of Jenna Bush's dress, she's a hottie
You couldn't be more wrong.
Probably not. That's because I would expect it of them. And that's the exact point. I don't expect it from a First Lady who is a real lady, unlike the former first spouse.
Al Franken wouldn't have the brains nor the demeanor to do those jokes nor the delivery style Mrs. Bush had. She was awesome. She was fantastic. She was darling and she was ENVIED by a lot of people out there. Too bad for them. Great for us. The President and his wife and family are the best and it sticks like a craw in some people's throats.
"Sit down little Davie. There's somethings you should know.
After Mommy and Daddy put you to bed they watch R rated movies, occasionally may say bad word, and, steady now, sometimes ..... they "do it".
Steady little fellow, but it really was time you knew."
Have some of these folks ever heard a Texas Aggie joke in their lives before?
LOL.......well done!!!
Mark
Speaking as one of those born-again Baptists, I have to say all of the shock and horror is absurd! How citified do you have to be to be hearing the joke for the first time about greenhorns milking a bull or stud? This is like rating 1930's movies with an R rating for sex and violence.
"Isn't THAT special???"
If it actually is appropriate for a lady to tell off-color jokes, then I am wrong.
Simply amazing. The only place these jokes were dirty is in somebody else's mind.
I would venture to guess that that joke has been around since before 1947 and wasn't considered risque even then. Get a perspective.
Being moral and upright is wonderful--but I don't think too many Christians would be wise to pin their hopes on that for salvation. Christ's gift to us was miraculous because we DO NOT deserve it--and whatever "righteousness" we have comes from Him, not our own selves.
And when--acting self-righteous--we accuse others of "lowering themselves" to levels we assume we stand firmly above, we are in danger of letting our condescension show.
The First Lady wasn't raunchy. She was edgy, and she was funny.
