Germany's unemployment rate hit 12.7% last month, and France's unemployment rate remained at 10.1%, both staggering numbers for Europe's two largest economies. These jobless figures, coupled with rising fuel and labor costs, are starting to take a political toll on Germany's Gerhard Schroeder and France's Jacque Chirac. Chirac appears to be in more immediate political trouble due to the upcoming vote in France in May to ratify the proposed EU constitution. Several months ago a clear majority of French voters supported the referendum, but due to the continuing economic slide recent polls now show a slight majority are against it. Chirac has been the most visible and vocal supporter of a strong united Europe (under French and German dominance), a Europe he says could challenge the "hyperpower" of the United States. But, if French voters reject the referendum, this could prove detrimental to Chirac's standing in his own country (his approval ratings are already plunging), in Europe, and the world.

I know they claim American boycotts are having a minimal impact but I have a feeling that we're really hurting them. Now if we could just get our military to move their bases to Poland.

This must still be April 1st, sounds too good to be true. Aint payback a bit* chirac? I love it.
I'd love to send Kerry to "lead" them, but then again, i couldn't stand to see JFnKerry in charge of any country.

Boycott and base closing....
Gerhard Schroeder and France's Jacque Chirac may not be feeling quite so snobbish any more.

I used to work for a German company. The owner of the company once told me that if Germany calculated their unemployment rate the same way the U.S. does, the German rate would be 3% higher than what they report...

It's all about confiscatory taxes and a work force who believes they are entitled to a minimum amount of output resulting in a maximum amount of entitlements.

Quick - raise taxes, increase welfare payments and let in more muslim immigrants...it has always helped in the past! That's about it.
Since, for example, BMW sales in the US are near record highs, I doubt it's a boycott. What else do we buy from Germany? Beer, cuckoo clocks? Glocks? I think in the US we stopped buying French cars around 1992. Problem is the French and Germans don't WANT to work. With their welfare system they don't HAVE to. Will they change? Doubtful. Like the frog in the pot they're cooked even if they can see exactly what's happening. Considering a French fertility rate of 1.85 children/woman and a German fertility rate of 1.38 children/women, they'll both soon be going the way of the Dodo bird. In an evolutionary blink of the eye.
I really will miss German cars and beer, though! (Doubt the Muslims weil be celebrating Oktoberfest when they take over! Or brewing much beer at all!)

Well, they're not too good at my house, either. Right now, between DH & myself, we're at a 100% unemployment rate!
But it could be worse...we could be in France or Germany, where I'm certain Americans would have first dibs on the few jobs available. ;)
