Found this on another message board, and thought my fellow Freepers would enjoy the history.
From the site: "The color photo was invented in 1903 by the Lumiere brothers, and the French army was the only one taking color photos during the course of the war."

That's exactly what I was thinking as I saw them. I knew a soldier from WW1, and I never really was able to feel what he must have gone through/saw, until these pictures.
Dan Rather, is that you?
However, maybe these photos should be published asap in France as a reminder of how good and decent their countrymen used to be and to show them the rapidity of their descent into moral decay and political irrelevance.
Is the guy in picture #30 taking a leak?
The French fighting forces are still a fine, professional bunch. The civilian leadership is crap.
WOW fabulous!
Thanks for the ping!
Ping to Sarge.
Here, Here! Post of the year for me.
A lesson to be learned.
WWII history lives in the descendants of of our Senior generation and we discuss it often.
WWI history by in large only lives in the history books and died with the previous generation.
How soon we forget.
WOW Calpernia those pics are wonderful.
Old photo ping!!
Those are truly stunning photos and they should be sent to the Eastman Museum of Photography in Rochester, NY! I have seen a lot of color pics, but never any from this early period and of such excellent quality. Where did they come from? Thanks!
Unfortunately, they also lost more than a million killed and these poor guys in the pics may have been some of them. French military leaders were as bad as the Brits and a whole generation was virtually wiped out through major stupidity and blunders such as charging against massed German machine guns. American soldiers did the same thing until they learned how to fight back against the Huns. My great uncle was killed by a German artillery shell in 1918 and the family mourned him for decades.
We must have flooded the site. I'm getting errors.Bump to come back later.
That's probably what happened. Don't give up, they're worth it.
Ditto, saving for later. Thank you for posting.
Black and white photos don't do history justice-they seem dead and not a part of the real world- like a story from a textbook. Then you see the images in color, like the General in a cafe reading the paper...-it really hits home, it really happened and not so long ago...

WWI (in color) bump
Not sure exactly where they came from; another Freeper (in the 30s, I believe) pointed out another website with these photos as well...which is a good thing, because I think we FREEPed that site to death!
Pictures are gone for the time being...we probably killed their bandwidth, my bad!
Ping for later read........
