Subject: Army Hospital gets a Fisher House

You don't see these stories on the Nightly news.

Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas) earlier this month. BAMC is where soldiers who have been med-evac'd from the combat zone via Germany, come to the US to be hospitalized, especially burn patients. At Fort Sam Houston they have facilities called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is basically a place where soldiers' families can stay (at little charge, or at no charge), while their soldier is recovering at BAMC. Even though Fort Sam Houston has more than one Fisher House, you can easily imagine that they are all "filled to the brim" almost constantly. While Denzel Washington was visiting patients in BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the installation's Fisher Houses.

During the tour, he asked how much one of these Fisher Houses cost to build. When he received the answer, he got-out his check book and wrote out a check for the full amount, right there "on-the-spot". The soldiers in BAMC were amazed to hear this story, and they want to "get the word out" to the American public because it warmed their hearts.

THat is a great story! A big Thank You goes out to him.

the listeners of WMAL in Washington DC contributed over $1 million. The original target was $250,000 but when they reached it, they just kept going.

Snopes verified. Whoohoo!!

Origins: In mid-December 2004, Denzel Washington — reportedly at the suggestion of a veteran known as "Ranger Jones" whom the actor met while filming the 1988 Civil War epic Glory — paid a visit to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. The popular actor took part in a Purple Heart ceremony, presenting medals to three Army soldiers who were recovering in the hospital from wounds received in Iraq....more...

Awesome news! My family stayed in the Fisher House when my mother was at the VA dying of cancer. We were so thankful for the ability to stay in a beautiful, clean place near where she was being treated that we asked all memorials be made to the Fisher House in her name.

The House was first rate. Thanks, Denzel. You'll never know how much it means to the families.

On WMAL Radio they said a Fisher House costs about one million dollars to build. Their listening audience donated enough for one and I understand they are well on their way towards a second one!
