Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
Exactly! And there Jesus also states that He came to set a man against his father, a daughter against mother, a daughter-in-law against mother-in-law and that his enemies will be the ones in his own household. So was Jesus being a radical homophobic, fundie nutcase here you Christophobes?
It appears that same division is at work right here in the Freerepublic family? Seems that people who really embrace and understand Scripture understand why Keyes did what he did and the non-religious Christophobic types don't.
It would be interesting to see if it's the same 'Christians' that want Terri to be die via a court ordered starvation and dehydration.
There are a lot of emotions being expressed on this thread. People are engaged, and that's good. Although I do wish individuals could refrain from namely calling(I've been guilty of that myself).
I'm of the opinion that the grey area is irrelevant. Try to recognize the issue for what it is, and if you can gain insight that will help you understand issues and/or individuals more fully, and improve yourself than this information was not gained in vain. Whether you are a Christian or not. Ultimately, there has been a lot of truth spoken here with regard to our relationship with Christ. That is the most important area one should hope to grow in.
So we now equate homosexuality to drug addiction ans alcoholism?
Bingo!!
You don't know what Keyes' daughter professes to believe.
The reference is entirely applicable.
Believe it or not, Christians are called to keep each other accountable.
"Believe it or not, Christians are called to keep each other accountable."
How have you sinned?
Many, many ways. That's why I need Jesus.
And you?
Who says Keyes' daughter isn't saying the same?
She isn't saying what? Please expand.
That she needs Jesus too.
If she believes she needs Jesus too, great.
What does that have to do with the moral issue (homosexuality) at hand?
I'm sure she has a plethora of beliefs just like anyone else. However for whatever reason she has strayed away from sound blbilical doctrine in her embracement of perversion.
Keyes can be overwhelming at times. Maybe she's just in a rebellion mode. Well at least this way she won't have abortions. And where do you stand?
"And where do you stand?"
In relation to what?
Good for him. He did the right thing. Tough love. Hopefully she will get over her rebellion and come to her senses one day.
Thanks for your response.
I try to ignore the flaming tones of the more emotionally involved posters, but I do get irritated when the only sins mentioned are ones the posters are unlikely to commit. I don't see comments on adultery, yet that is right up there with murder in the Ten Commandments.
I am also not confident that the lines I ususally see interpreted as condemning lesbianism (Romans 1:26 and 27) actually do so. Whan I read various translations I can see it as allowing anal intercourse, an exact parallel to what is being condemned in men.
Should Ms. Keyes pursue it, I'm sure some liberal judge would order Alan to pay for her tuition.
You want to quote scripture? Here's one for you:
Matthew 18:35 - So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
