If John Paul II does pass on while Bush is in office, W SHOULD go and represent the United States. He should NOT send anyone else for that event. Prayers for Pope John Paul II.

I just heard the news on my way home. You are right, this is a godly man. He visited Phoenix once years ago, and you could literally feel it in the air.

I'm not Catholic, but I love this Pope.

Does the Catholic Church haave any protocol to deal with the situation of where the Pope is deemed to not be of sound mind? Does anyone know?

In an earlier post, someone described this thread like a family waiting in the hospital waiting room waiting to hear info on a loved one. So please respect that.

You have strong opinions, which is your right, but this is not the thread to voice them.

No, they don't. The Church will go on as usual. If the Pope dies, then the Enclave will begin to choose the next pope. The RCC does not depend on the Pope for its day-to-day operations. He is the spiritual leader. The RCC can continue to operate without his leadership for quite some time.

JPII is of sound mind.
It's his body that's tiring.

Um...I did not "bash" the pope.

"We don't worship the Pope. We worship plaster statues, just like you worship Bibles. Please get it right next time."

Oh, my mistake.

The pope can step down but there is no provision for a 'vice pope' to take over. They have no provisions for the pope if he is incapacitated and cannot communicate.

Consider what this man meant to the defeat of the Soviet empire.

I thought that was Reagan?

It's like Peggy Noonan said in a recent article. JPII is a man trapped in a shell called Parkinsons.

I know. It was a hypothetical. What happens if the Pope is deemed to be in a vegetative state deemed permanent, and it lasts for years? That would be the extreme case.
