M aya Keyes loves her father and mother. She put off college and moved from the family home in Darnestown to Chicago to be with her dad on a grand adventure. Even though she disagrees with him on "almost everything" political, she worked hard for his quixotic and losing campaign for the U.S. Senate.
Now Maya Keyes -- liberal, lesbian and a little lost -- finds herself out on her own. She says her parents -- conservative commentator and perennial candidate Alan Keyes and his wife, Jocelyn -- threw her out of their house, refused to pay her college tuition and stopped speaking to her.

Me neither.
It sounds like an idea worth pursuing, thanks. We have not given up, and he has admitted that his Jewish feelings are not diminished.
Refusing to pay for your kid's higher education if you can afford it, and if the kid will profit by it, is wrong. Period. It does not matter whether of not the kid agrees with you politically, or has sexually habits/choices of which you disapprove. In my view, it is an essential breach of an implicit contract when you have a child. Keyes disappoints me on this one, in a way that goes beyond my previous disagreements with him regarding his public life.
Thank you for your candor. I will not presume to criticsize your standards as you've defined them. At the same time, I do not share them.
It is easy to do an end-run around one's convictions in the same way it would be easier to play tennis without a net, but without a net it wouldn't be tennis anymore.
Errrr...what the hell does that mean?
Regarding your question, Connie Hair's Freeper name was "CAL".
She was an early pillar of FR. I don't remember the reason she was banned--I only recall it did not make sense to me at the time. It was in 1999 or 2000.I beleive a dustup over a Freeper event was involved.
She did a lot of good work in FR's early days, for which she is fondly remembered by many.
I recall that she was at a recent Freeper event, and her picture was on here with some other Freepers. It was good to see her in the fold again.
I'm sure you'd rather me roll over while others castigate Keyes, but it's not going to happen. And the beauty of this country is your opinion counts for just as much as mine, whether you like it or not.
It means you love them while you chastise Mary Cheney and then toss them out when you are done with them.
I would like to understand that, but I can not, perhaps you can elaborate.
Using you own logic, if you believe the child will not profit from it, indeed, if you believe the child will suffer more as a consequence, then it is your duty as a parent not to subsidize it.
Given her father's high profile, I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't recruited for this by "friends". They just love it when a conservative's child or sister outs her- or himself and probably worked at making this one happen. This is just part of their m.o. Remember the near-scandal it was when Jane Fonda started studying the Bible? It seems that it's rare that liberal's children become Christians or come out of the closet as conservatives.
"I respect your post and would appreciate your comment on the following aspect of the story:
"She put off college and moved from the family home in Darnestown to Chicago to be with her dad on a grand adventure. Even though she disagrees with him on "almost everything" political, she worked hard for his quixotic and losing campaign for the U.S. Senate. "
It troubles me a good deal that Keyes was willing to accept his daughter's help, her putting off college for a year and moving, but not accept his daughter after that.
It just seems hypocritical to me."
Not really. When an adopted family member of mine told his parents he was gay, they avoided him for years, but in time came to accept it. They love him, but hate his sin. I assume Alan is doing the same. These things take time to accept.
"by finger--painting with dog poop?"
No, from revenge. I didn't expect her to rub the feces in, but I should say she had gloves on and used the plastic bag too. Gross, but it gave her a sense of power over a man who took it from her.
"For a "followerofchrist" you seem to have a strange bias against "fundamentalists".
I do. I believe many focus on who they can hate, rather than who they can love and those they can judge, rather than those they can teach.
"Have you ever stopped to consider the folks you are accusing are raising their kids in a godly way, but the kids are naturally rotten all on their own, and doing right by these kids won't make them *be* right? "
Yes I have considered this, but being forceful and totalitarian does not help already-problem children.
"Dont forget godless.. Look my mother raised seven kids, all the exact same way! and some of us got into trouble, and some of us did not. Some went to school and got Engineering Degrees and some did not finish High school. You cant look at *your* neighbors, and *your* friends and come to any valid conclusion with the scope that you just did."
Yes they are Godless, as was I and the last few generations of my family. My mom, uncle, grandparents and great grandparents were (and are) very good folks. It's hard to preach the gospel to folks who have had a good secular life.
I should say I was also a schoolteacher for many years and observed many families and my judgement about parenting is also based on that experience. You notice many times that when families have trouble, they try "catch-up" parenting. You can't do that and offer them a quick fix at the church youth group or a wilderness camp. God must be within one's own heart, not injected into them from the outside.
Go and tend your own garden, followerofchrist.
I would like to understand that, but I can not, perhaps you can elaborate.
I would too. The WP is pretty clear that the break came as a result of Maya attending the "CounterInaugural," but clearly there is quite a faction here that wants to pillory the father and make a martyr out of the daughter.
I see no reason to believe a single word she has to say.
Is this not a judgement on your part? Unless there is something I'm missing from your narrative, the english translation of what happened is your friend got offended at being man-handled and did an obscene amount of damaged in revenge.
It would seem to me even though you call yourself followerofchrist, you still give some approval to the action because you are choosing to rename the act in terms that blame the victim of your vandalism.
(I presume that's what must have happened, since you indicate that this anecdote is analogous to the Keyes situation.)
If his political campaigns are any indication, I doubt it.
