Action Alert: Oppose H.R. 418 (national ID)
February 8, 2005
Are the terrorists winning? When al-Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, they made it clear they hate America and want to terrorize us into changing America.
If they could, the terrorists would destroy the unique American way of life. But they can't. Only we can do that.
Tragically, too much of the legislation enacted by Congress in a knee-jerk reaction to 9/11 does al-Qaeda's job for them. The Patriot Act took the first, disastrous step toward fundamentally changing our way of life. Then came the homeland security bill, followed by the 9/11 intelligence reorganization bill. And now the Real ID Act of 2005 (H.R. 418) will be voted on Thursday, February 10th.
What's wrong with H.R. 418 -- a bill we are told will stem the flow of illegal aliens through our porous borders? For starters, it does NOTHING to stem the flow of illegal aliens. Instead, H.R. 418 will:
1. Establish a national ID card.
2. Establish a federally-coordinated database of personal information on American citizens with Canada and Mexico.
3. Use the new national ID to track American citizens when traveling outside the U.S. -- and within the U.S.
4. Re-define "terrorism" in broad new terms that could include members of firearms rights and pro-life groups or other such groups as determined by whoever is in power at the time.
5. Authorize the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to unilaterally expand the information included in driver's licenses, including such biometric information as retina scans and DNA information -- and even radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking technology. Carry a drivers license with RFID and governmental officials will know your whereabouts 24/7.
Incredibly, H.R. 418 does nothing to solve the growing threat to national security posed by people who are already in the U.S. illegally. Instead, H.R. 418 states what we already know: that certain people here illegally are "deportable." But it does nothing to mandate deportation. H.R. 418 fails miserably on this most critical issue.
The Real ID Act or Real National ID Act will impose a Soviet-style internal passport on law-abiding American citizens. Proponents of H.R. 418 say we must "make sacrifices" like this to control our borders and fight illegal immigration. But H.R. 418 is a Trojan horse -- it pretends to offer desperately needed border control in order to stampede Americans into sacrificing what is uniquely American: more of our constitutionally protected liberty. H.R. 418 does what al-Qaeda could never do without our help.
H.R. 418 does what legislation restricting firearm ownership does. It punishes law-abiding citizens. Criminals will ignore it. H.R. 418 offers us a false sense of greater security at the cost of taking a gigantic step toward making America a police state. The terrorists will have won.
Urge your U.S. representative to vote "no" on H.R. 418. Go to http://capwiz.com/liberty/issues/alert/?alertid=6938731&type=CO

Its not any Government's responsibility to protect us . .<<
What do you think the second amendment is for?. . .<<
It is the job of the US Government to protect the USA, "from all enemies, both foreign and domestic".
The second amendment ensures that our government will not enslave us, allows us to shoot for food, and protect personal property.
RFID is not even part of the proposal. The list in the original post is an opinion not a fact.
The post is full of lies and opinions. Not the proposal.
They are repeating what Grover Norquist Jr. wrote in a missive a few months ago. What's his dog in this hunt?
So it should be easy to answer the question:
Cite ONE CASE where governent information gathering has not been abused and extended far beyond the basis on which it was sold.
There isn't one.
Exactly.
Most interesting.
Would Bluetooth be slingshot proof? Might a club scramble its electronic innards? How about a dog in heat peeing on it?
The government would need to hire a million Bluetooth guards to watch over the things, don't you think?
Your question has nothing to do with the proposal. Therefore it has no bearing on my replies on this thread. Are you a parrot for the chicken little lobby or have you actually read the bill?
Maybe you don't know it but the government already has more information on you than you realize. Site a case where you have been abused other than being taxed to death and I'll listen.
I watched the debate on C-span, it is NOT a national ID card. The best argument the oppostion could come up with is the paragraph that overrides the courts in the building of the last 3.5 miles of fence along the CA/Mex border.
I heard the arguments and am in favor of HR418, and plan on letting my rep's know that.
Bluetooth is too expensive to be used for tagging everyone. RFID is passive and cheap. But if RFID readers can have their range extended like Bluetooth transcievers, then you would not need very many of them to cover a city, and they could be mounted out of easy reach, like surveillance cameras.
If they put National 'ID' Cards in place they may as well go ahead and do away with states......
I'm not the one at issue.
I asked you to cite a case where the government actually kept their promises about data protection.
Since you can't, because there isn't such a case, why should the government be trusted with one more bit of information than it already has?
The answer, of course, is that it shouldn't.
Why is that so hard for you to understand?
Ben Franklin stated the exact ppisite.
Let me see if I have this right. They're gonna gather locations of 250 million+ people. That glut of knowledge is gonna make exactly what happen to us all?
Do I let big brother in the door when he shows up to install the tele-viewer thingy or no?
You're correct & I agree. Now, we all need to go back to the time where communities & neighborhoods were small & close, everyone knew everyone else & everyone else's business. When someone new showed up, they could be treated as outsiders & with suspicion until they proved themselves to be worthy citizens.
....Sorely needed.....
I concur. I see nother way to prevent federal election fraud. One eye, one vote.
No card, no vote.
It is the job of the US Government to protect the USA, "from all enemies, both foreign and domestic".
"from all enemies, both foreign and domestic", when written also forbid the Government from maintaining a 'standing army'. How do you reconcile that?
The dang bill isn't for gathering more information on Americans.
Why is that so hard for you to grasp. Read the Bill.
Staying with your relevence to the thread.
How many times has the Phil not seen his shadow on Ground Hog day?
