Immigration Not Most Important Issue

Fewer than 3 in 10 Americans say immigration is an "extremely important" issue for Congress and the president to deal with over the next year, while an additional 38% say it is "very important." At the same time, immigration has become a more important issue to Americans over the past several years, increasing from a 17% "extremely important" rating in 2001 to the current reading of 27%, in a poll conducted this past December.

Most Americans Say Immigration Should Be Decreased

According to a Jan. 3-5 Gallup Poll, a slight majority of Americans, 52%, say the level of immigration in this country should be decreased. Nearly 4 in 10 adults nationwide (39%) say it should remain the same, and just 7% say it should be increased

Majority Doesn’t Approve of Bush’s Handling of Immigration

A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Jan. 7-9 found that only about a third of Americans, 34%, approve of the way President George W. Bush is handling immigration, while a majority of Americans, 54%, disapprove.

These results show partisan divisions on Bush’s handling of immigration. A majority of Republicans, 58%, approve of Bush’s handling of immigration. Among Democrats, however, only 19% approve of Bush on immigration.

I would imagine that 27% figure represents those folks living in the most affected states that have the dubious distinction of seeing what is happening to our country first hand. When the rest of the country sees more of this, that number will increase dramatically. Unfortunately, by that time we'll likely have 30,000,00 or more "Guests" in our country to pay for.

Of course the anti-immigration crowd will focus on the fact that "54% disagree with the President". Of course most of the 54% are Democrats who do not approve of anything the President actually does.

And of course this is from Gallup which said that Kerry would win the election and was one of the worst polling firms in 2004.

Not nesessarily. Legal immigration can be controlled. Legal immigrants pay for the process of immigrating, pay taxes, are more likely to add to society and more likely to have a fondness for our way of life.

They likely do. It seems the writer would like us to believe that it doesn't have a lot of American support.

i did a poll of my house and found that 100% of those polled responded that immigration was extremely important.

Of course, we'll have to see the President do something about health care and education now, too, since the polls also say those should be priorities. /sarcasm

I can't understand what the big deal is about 3 million people entering our country illegally every year? So what if it's war time. So what if this adds the equivalent of 3 major cities a year of illegal aliens?

Don't they buy stuff from McDonald's and Walmart? Good for business, good for us!

I agree with you... the poll is historically suspect. So why would a solid conservative use a liberal polling outfit like CNN/Gallup to make a political point...such as on immigration?

Yeah. I had to read that first couple of lines twice.

Someones setting an agenda here and trying to minimize the fact that 65% of the American people polled feel that this is a VERY IMPORTANT issue!!!

These are weasel words, for sure.
