"So what if this adds the equivalent of 3 major cities a year of illegal aliens?"

I suggest we give them Houston and be done with it.

" Seriously, are they trying to be deliberately ambiguous in the questions they asked?"

Yes.

"at the risk of fracturing the party. "

You've got it backwards. At least on FR, the vast majority of the anti-immigrant posters are people who disliked Bush first and then use immigration as an excuse to attack him.

Reminds me of the Old Media saying that Bush is responsible for partisanship when in fact it's the Democrats that are opposing everything Bush proposes.

Remember, the Bush team has not taken the field yet on this issue. As soon as they do, the anti-immigrants will fold faster than Saddam's army, because the anti-immigrant propaganda is based on Buchanan/Tancredo lies, distortions and racist slogans.

I wonder how the question was framed, do you know?

It seems that it focused on immigration as a whole, and not illegal immigration.

Illegal immigration effects other areas, like terrorism, social security, taxes, education, etc.

Somehow I missed that poll. But I just voted "No". :-)

85% of FReepers do *not* approve of Bush's amnesty proposal, which makes sense.

There is also another FR poll that asks, "After hearing President Bush's speech, do you approve of his immigration reform plan?"

68% of FReepers say "No," they do not approve of Bush's immigration reform plan.

I didn't see the poll when it was offered either. Thanks for the other link, I've never seen that one either.

Check out the FR polls (3 still active) at:

http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/poll

What is your opinion regarding immigration:

After hearing President Bush's speech, do you approve of his immigration reform plan?

Do you approve of the plan to let some of the eight million illegal aliens in the United States move toward legal status without penalty -- but with social security benefits?

At least on FR, the vast majority of the anti-immigrant posters are people who disliked Bush first and then use immigration as an excuse to attack him.

If what you say is true, then according to the last FR poll on the matter 68% FR members & lurkers dislike Bush anyway.

One day it will occur to you that this isn't about Bush.

Current polls (3)are still open on FR on this subject.

I find the results of this one interesting. 7.5 % say immigration is not a problem or favor open borders. So if the OBL's got their way and stiffled this information and got rid of all of us, there wouldn't be too many left!

http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/poll?poll=10;results=1

Illegal immigration is the problem. 33.8% 1,008
Seal and militarize borders. 33.1% 986
Borders should be closed. 15.7% 467
Immigration should be reduced. 10.1% 300
Borders should be open. 4.1% 121
Immigration is not a big issue. 3.4% 101
100.2% 2,983

68% of FRs don't post on immigrant threads. To most people it isn't an important issue.

You said..."I find the results of this one interesting. 7.5 % say immigration is not a problem or favor open borders."

I wonder what the percentage of FR posters who are democrat activists and staffers is?

The dems are salivating at the prospect of a Bush /Republican led immigration reform bill. When things go south years down the road...they will hang this albatross around the pubs neck the way they hung the Great Depression around Hoover and co.

"68% of FRs don't post on immigrant threads. To most people it isn't an important issue."

I don't know where you got your figure, but many don't post about the subject because they don't appreciate being called names and being given a jargon of propaganda from you and a very FEW others. To most people it is an important issue and I think you know it.

Here's a freepmail I got the other day:

--snip

George Bush is not handling the current border situation appropriately. Not only do his policies fail to protect the American security, economy and people adequately in the short term during a period of heightened terrorist threat, in the bigger picture his policies do not establish adequate precedent affirming our long-term sovereignty over the southwestern states.

Appeasement will not work. Behind all the rhetoric, the real reason for the Bush "amnesty" program is the hope of averting a Kosovo-like conflict over the territory ethnic Mexicans believe rightfully belongs to them. Make ‘em happy (give ‘em enough money) and they won’t demand independence.

We will have an impossible task defending our sovereignty claims before the court of world opinion given our wrongheaded support of the ethnic Albanian cause in Kosovo and other places.

Conquest is an historically legitimate method for gaining territory, we better stick to our guns (literally) on this one.

Americans need to pull their heads out of the sand and open their eyes to the seriousness of the real underlying threat facing us. There's a whole lot more at stake than the benevolent provision of minimum wage jobs, that Americans don't want, to impoverished illegal aliens seeking to exploit our economy.

We gave the Canal and the U.S. Zone protecting it back to Panama, a country we created by taking it from Colombia in 1903. Shouldn’t we also restore the southwest U.S. to Mexico or to independent ethnic Mexicans ??

Our sovereignty, our territorial dominion, our very existence as a Republic are under serious threat of demise, just like the Roman Empire.

We better start defending our borders and our sovereignty before Pandora escapes – there’s no putting her back in the box.

Prefer to keep a low profile.--snip

Wait until they start following home at night, selling drugs by your house, stealing from you and disrupting your business. Then you might join me in wanting a halt to the invasion of criminals from the south.

Well. I certainly can't blame the person for FReep mailing that to you instead of posting it for everyone to see what a tin foil nut case he is. Was it sent you by someone who has a website that solicits money from xenophobes? If so, that should tell you what their opinion of you is.
