MARINES dissed in Washington DC bar -- UNBELIEVABLE story
friend ^ | January 30, 2005 | self

Edited on 01/30/2005 7:45:24 PM PST by Jim Robinson. [history]

A good friend called me a few hours ago terribly upset. Her two sons, both United States Marines, were in Washington DC last night (Saturday) with their dates. They went to the Hawk and Dove, which is a Capitol Hill watering hole.

Now before I go any farther here, understand that I know these two Marines and these are really good kids, hardly the rowdy type -- both went through OCS and are just not the troublemaking types.

At any rate, they were NOT ALLOWED entry into the Hawk and Dove. They were told that the military WAS NOT WELCOME and that especially was true for MARINES.

Is your blood boiling yet???? Mine is. I cannot reveal who these Marines' parents are, but let me tell you, my Freeper brethren, this is a patriotic family who has done much for our nation. (Their mother spends many weekends at Walter Reed with the injured soldiers and even had a house full of them over for Thanksgiving.) I'm telling you, this is an extraordinary family that has given much in service to our country.

So here's the deal. I want this bar to know of our displeasure with their disrespectful behavior toward these two young Marines.

At the very least, I'd like to see a round for these young men on the house and a profuse apology from the owner.

Conservative Gadfly is neither nameless nor faceless to members and regular guests (such as myself) of the DC Chapter.

I used to work two doors down from the Hawk. Just like where I worked, gays and Hill staffers sit side by side, as do street people and cops. No occurence on that street or near the market would surprise me..

I have said repeatedly I KNOW THESE MARINES. Their mother is a colleague of mine who I work with EVERY DAY.

My apologies--I haven't been in the "fight" here--but that reads like the begining of every hoax I've ever read. No offense to you, it's just that some would prefer to wait until the info gets out. Some are more vocal about their doubts than others. ;)

When I was stationed in the D.C. area, there were occasional fights (and not fights just involving 1-2 guys) between Marines and civilians that would result in a bar banning Marines for awhile. And often, the base would declare that particular bar off limits for some period as well. I recall that happening at Champions in Georgetown once.

'Course, I don't know if that happened here, and there's always the chance that the place is just nasty.

I stopped going to Champions in 1993 when a guy was stabbed to death outside at about 11:30 pm. Georgetown went through a real bad time during Hizzoner Barry's admin.

If you have a military ping list, please put me on it.

Thanks.

This is absolutely unconscionable treatment of any serviceman.

Most of us learned long ago, do not wear a uniform off base on your own time. That has always been true and remains so today.

I had this garbage happen to me more than once. Specific recollections include a place in Monterey CA and a bar in Greenville NC (which later blew into a huge, embarassing story for the town, since it was basically SOP to treat Marines this way).

I remember hearing the mayor of Jacksonville NC (home of Camp Lejeune) speak at a breakfast one time. He said the biggest cause of crime generally comes from a group of young males (approx. ages 17-24). He then said Jacksonville NC had the largest concentration of said young males, due to Lejeune. The mayor then touted how Jacksonville's very low crime rate demonstrated how professionally most Marines conduct themselves. That made a powerful impression on me.

In the case of Marines generally the haircut gives you away.

Prolly right..I suspect being OCS grads, they wore their uniforms with the biggest gold bars made.

Any town in the US that has a constant presence of military people, loves their money, hate their being there.

Sad state of affairs.

They used to do this stuff even in Norfolk back in the 70's.

I never personally saw one, but heard stories of the "No Dogs Or Sailors" signs at some bars.

Marines don't have to be in uniform to be recognized as Marines. These are the distinguishing characteristics: very short haircuts, relative youth, obvious good physical condition, military bearing, always at least two together, and, almost always, politeness. There are Marines in the Hawk & Dove every night. It is a place where "my little pony" Capitol Hill staffers go to meet real men.

Do they keep Teddy Kennedy out? And using your logic then all Dems should be kept out because one is a fat drunk and causes trouble!

It's a 'legendary' place. Staffers on the hill, mostly Democrat, call the place home. Inside it's a hole, but it is generally packed.

It is very near the Capitol.

The only time I was ever refused service as a Marine was at a bar in Scotland, 1978.

Our ship had just come into port, when another had just left.

We walked up the stairs and the bouncer stopped us. He turned to his boss and said "Yankee Doodles"..."Sorry mates, we cant let you in!"

We were just stunned, first by the insult, then that we werent let in. We asked why, and he told us that the last ship that was in there had started a big fight and they werent letting in any Americans.

We told him we werent from that last ship, and he didnt care.

TOMMY
by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
