Travel: Smokers called Animals In A Zoo
Minnesotans Against Smoking Bans ^ | 1-8-05 | Robert Hayes Halfpenny

Posted on 01/08/2005 9:20:21 AM PST by SheLion

I am surprised Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson didn’t refer to the smokers as swine in a pig sty. Isn’t that, after all one of the one of the first images that comes to mind when think of a pen?  Before I am offended by “da mayor” I would have to be offended by the reference to the term smoking pens. In a city and state  that was founded by a group of people so seriously reviled for their own beliefs in years past, you would think they would be among the first to take a “live and let live” attitude about the behavior and choices of others. Clearly the past lessons learned about intolerance by the Mormons must now have been forgotten.

Only 88 airports nationwide is hardly a mandate to make one’s own airport smoke free. Furthermore if these “smoking kiosks” are eliminated it will only cause people to find other places to smoke. Delta Airlines is correct in standing behind the rights of the smokers.  Perhaps they have taken note that incidence of “air rage” only became prevalent AFTER smoking was banned on aircraft. It should also be noted that since the ban, they no longer use fresh air to ventilate the planes; instead, they just run the air through a filtrations system which in an enclosed environment further exacerbates the problem.

Mayor Anderson’s pompous arrogance in stating that the ban will help smokers to “break the habit” is outrageous. It is not his job to be neither a social engineer nor the arbiter of personal choices. I do know however, that as long as Salt Lake City and Utah continue down this Draconian path of heavy handed intolerance, I will avoid their state in very way possible. I will not travel to it, I will not travel thru it, and I will not support my company scheduling a convention there.

BANS ARE BAD! Read it again, BANS ARE BAD! Banning blacks from white facilities---BAD! Banning books---BAD! Banning Beer---Bad! If the people of Utah agree that these bans are bad, then they must also agree that banning smoking is also BAD! I would certainly hope at this juncture they are starting to realize that any action, that would favor a smoking ban of any type, will only create far more harm than good. IN all fairness I should note their may be one kind of good ban. That of course would be banning Mayor Anderson from further political office at the next election.

Before I forget, SheLion, thank you for the thread.
It's been months since we had the opportunity to play with the "Morlocks", those shadowy denizens of the dark, grim, totalitarian, controlling twits underworld.

It's fun!

When tobacco is treated the same as marijuana is today us 'addicts' will at least be able to get sympathy from the liberals and libertarians, the do gooders and legal profession....

Maine recently opened up three Meth Clinics. I wonder if we can go there. LOL!

The reason the Government is working to get us all to quit smoking, is so Big Pharm can get our money for quit smoking aides!

We have been forced to fund our own enemies. It's like passing laws to fund muggers.

Very enlightening.

In Arizona, twice over the last 8 years, there has been an increase (via voting initiative) on the sales tax on the sale of tobacco. The first "reason" was to help fund health care.

Guess what the second reason (six years after that) was? You got it. Same reason.

Even though it doesn't affect me personally, I still think it's all a load of crap, for the reasons you state.

Maybe it's time that you all do what SheLion does...roll your own! Might take some of the $$ out of Big T, no? LOL :)

Because they are sick and tired of being told how to live. They are not little kids. Until they outlaw tobacco, its a legal product. Smokers are not more violent then nonsmokers. As a matter of fact, look at the people who attempt assinations on politicians etc. Most of them are tobacco hating liberals!

All I said was that I have no objection to smokers smoking at airports as long as their smoke did not go up my nose or stink up my clothes.

Since smoking has been banned in all airports (except in designated areas) for at least fifteen years, your continuing fixation on a non-existing problem, fifteen years later, betrays you...

By your logic, we all would have the right to go around farting in other people's faces.

I have no doubt that there's a "compassionate" lobby somewhere working on that !!

I'm with you, my friend! Walter Williams said it best. He said smokers should quit hiding and apologizing for using a legal product. he said smokers, stand up and be proud. Stop acting like second class citizens. Since then, I have stopped apologizing for what I choose to do.

That's what didn't make sense to me. Is is a ruse on their part? Does gov't still fund the tobacco farmers?

Why would they alienate their base?

Not being a smoker, I find this whole issue curious.

I just about put my foot through the TV that day when the smiling AG's stood on stage after their big win.  I sure don't understand what Big Tobacco was thinking.  Why didn't they stand up and fight at that time?  Now they are spending billions of dollars in countless court cases around the US.  They should have spent that money right at the beginning and told the AG's where to stick their paperwork.

A few airports have such smoking rooms. They're completely enclosed with glass walls, and have large exhaust fans dumping the air outside.
____________________________________________________________

I used the one in the Atlanta airport once...I about gagged. There were way too many people in there, and the exhaust fans couldn't keep up. I try to avoid a connection or layover there now...I'd rather freeze my tushie off outside than be in one of those things.

I never mentioned going into a segregated smoking area and, if you use a re-breather, you can sit right next to me in the aircraft and smoke the re-breather equivalent of an entire carton during the flight for all I care.

Your "rebreather" might be put to better use for your use during irrational rants (it is soundproof, no?). Your red herring is comical, since I don't recall wanting to smoke sitting next to you anywhere. I have always been able to handle 15 to 22-hour flights without smoke or alcohol. You?

Would it also be fun to cover the taxes smokers pay that the gov would have to get somewhere else, namely from your pocket?

It's getting closer and closer to that time where WE, The People must stand up to these tyrants that call themselves "masters"

This is very true. For years, a lawmaker running for office would promise us the moon to get our vote. Once in office, they turned their backs on us.

It's time we all stop being sheeple for the lawmakers. They live the high life, but to hell with US!

I agree with you about the ban----It wouldn't even last a week because of the yells from all of the politicians.

LOL! Can you see it now? Store workers all over the state pulling tobacco off of their shelves. Huge semi's out front driven by FEDS to load the stuff.

Customers standing in 10 mile long lines to 'stock up.' Money instantly stops going into the coffers. hehe!

Then the FEDS are hijacked driving their semi's out of the state. LOL! It would be a mad mess. But I can picture it all right now.

Airports which have enclosed smoking areas which exhaust air to the outside have the best idea. Shoot...I'd pay to use them. That might be a revenue generator for the airports, IMO.

Please note that the "spittle spouting" pollyanas are opposed to this, even when smokers volunteer to fund them>
Same with Smoking Only restaurants. There is not more violent twit than the controlling twit on a moral high horse:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences." -- C. S. Lewis
