Travel: Smokers called Animals In A Zoo
Minnesotans Against Smoking Bans ^ | 1-8-05 | Robert Hayes Halfpenny

Posted on 01/08/2005 9:20:21 AM PST by SheLion

I am surprised Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson didn’t refer to the smokers as swine in a pig sty. Isn’t that, after all one of the one of the first images that comes to mind when think of a pen?  Before I am offended by “da mayor” I would have to be offended by the reference to the term smoking pens. In a city and state  that was founded by a group of people so seriously reviled for their own beliefs in years past, you would think they would be among the first to take a “live and let live” attitude about the behavior and choices of others. Clearly the past lessons learned about intolerance by the Mormons must now have been forgotten.

Only 88 airports nationwide is hardly a mandate to make one’s own airport smoke free. Furthermore if these “smoking kiosks” are eliminated it will only cause people to find other places to smoke. Delta Airlines is correct in standing behind the rights of the smokers.  Perhaps they have taken note that incidence of “air rage” only became prevalent AFTER smoking was banned on aircraft. It should also be noted that since the ban, they no longer use fresh air to ventilate the planes; instead, they just run the air through a filtrations system which in an enclosed environment further exacerbates the problem.

Mayor Anderson’s pompous arrogance in stating that the ban will help smokers to “break the habit” is outrageous. It is not his job to be neither a social engineer nor the arbiter of personal choices. I do know however, that as long as Salt Lake City and Utah continue down this Draconian path of heavy handed intolerance, I will avoid their state in very way possible. I will not travel to it, I will not travel thru it, and I will not support my company scheduling a convention there.

BANS ARE BAD! Read it again, BANS ARE BAD! Banning blacks from white facilities---BAD! Banning books---BAD! Banning Beer---Bad! If the people of Utah agree that these bans are bad, then they must also agree that banning smoking is also BAD! I would certainly hope at this juncture they are starting to realize that any action, that would favor a smoking ban of any type, will only create far more harm than good. IN all fairness I should note their may be one kind of good ban. That of course would be banning Mayor Anderson from further political office at the next election.

Years ago, in our former, polite society, there were simply places that smokers would never have dreamed of smoking. It would have been Just Not Done, because it's impolite.

You hit the nail right on the head. Being polite. Wonder what ever happened to manners? This smoking issue has pitted people against one another. I have never seen the likes. Who needs terrorists when we have the highly paid professional anti-smokers and their minions.

Come to think of it: we have a lot of their minions right here in Free Republic.

Funny isn't it that now that we have effectively banned many things such as DDT we find that they did some good.

Smoking which I don't necessarily like the smell of can have it's good side.

Smoking in moderation for some people can have it's beneficial moments not only the settling of nerves.

I don't understand what it is that makes local officials set themselves up as despots.

I would contribute for the rest of my life just to hear about the look on their faces when they are served with "Civil Rights violations under color of authority". And watch them stumble trying to "explain" their 'junk' science".

I, too, would be a regular donor. And that's for sure.

I love Denver's bar too. I was there for several hours last year(in the morning) and I had coffee and that was great too.

I was so grateful to find this smoking bar that I gave the young man a HUGE tip----He hated to see me leave.

Years ago? When I was a kid, smokers smoked everywhere. It was impolite to ask guests NOT to smoke in your home, not to burn your furniture, not to shake their ashes on the floor.

OK. What's your thoughts on the subject of legal MJ?...

That is the subject for another thread or series of Freepmails. No need to hijack this thread for that issue.

and what if tobacco becomes illegal?

Then the jackbooted thugs will have another reason to harass citizens.

What is the nannystate going to TAX to replace the lost "revenue"?

The income of wetbacks perhaps?

My pecker?

This is a something best kept between you and your Mrs.
I will comment no further on the subject.

Oh Ya, and the same Over bearing, Heavy handed, big Regulatory Action is going on here! Texas may be a RED state, BUT Austin (Travis County) is BLUE and Proud of it.
Austin's Socialist City Council & Travis County commissioner's has been on the "no smoking in public" warpath for several years now

Interesting. Why are smokers more violent than non-smokers?

WHY are sheeple so malleable?

But those of us that work hard behind the scenes to fight the control, restrictions, bans and taxes on cigarettes are always accused of working 'for' Big Tobacco.

Right. Sounds like the "behind the scenes" efforts weren't quiet enough. Someone blew the whistle. And "so what" if there are those working to support an industry? Why don't we hear the same condemnation for the alcohol industry? (even though it too, is legal.)

Big T fell on their knees in front of the Attorney General's and by doing so, Big T really stuck it to the smokers.

That's what didn't make sense to me. Is is a ruse on their part? Does gov't still fund the tobacco farmers?

Why would they alienate their base?

Not being a smoker, I find this whole issue curious.

I agree with you about the ban----It wouldn't even last a week because of the yells from all of the politicians.

Pretty funny,though.

And the best part is that they do it without taxpayer money !

You show me a coalition in any state that is for Tobacco Free Anything that is not funded by the taxes people pay on cigarettes.

These coalitions were formed after the Tobacco Settlement. And they are funded by the taxes smokers pay on cigarettes.

These coalitions were supposed to work to help people quit smoking that wanted to. But the money was over whelming, and it got out of hand. And power became greed.

They started using the taxes smokers pay on cigarettes to gain control over them and to ban, restrict and then scream for more taxes. The anti's just love living the high life, while we sit and pay for this personal abuse.

I remember when men were men too. The complaining ones were always the "little old ladies"

Well this little old lady believes most adults are capable of making their own decisions and the government should stay out of it.

I smoke. I'm going to die, like everyone else. Big deal.
