Could New York be next?

The earthquake that ravaged coastline communities surrounding the Indian Ocean has reawakened a debate over the possibility that a tsunami could hit New York.

Do you know rotting and decaying vegetation account for the majority of the release of CO2 into the air.

A meteor did hit the Yucatan Peninsula at some time in the Earths geologic past and it has been estimated that the wave that hit the now Texas coast was a mile high and didnt stop until it hit what is now Dallas.

SOmething about a ridge under the ocean which would prevent the waves from getting that high.

The Atlantic Shelf extends for hundreds of miles. There is no similar shelf along the Pacific coast. The shelf (which is what you would think it is based on the word) creates shallow waters in a protective fringe. This shallowness drags on wave energy and saps it as the energy passes over it. It is the reason that, even with five Hurricanes a year, the East Coast never sees the size of wave that Hawaii gets every year.

I've heard about the 3 sisters while stationed up in Marquette, Mich.

We sent out Hueys from our base for a few days (K.I. Sawyer AFB) looking for the Fitzgerald before figuring out where she went down.

Boston is easy to save. Just divert all the water into a series of semipermeable tunnels underneath the city. Too bad for those in the tunnels at the time though.

How about we just divert Teddy Kennedy into a series of tunnels.

Have you heard any damage reports

TC, I looked at the IADC and API sites and saw nothing, but could not connect to SPE for some reason. I also talked with Global, Nobel, and Unocal hands on Wednesday and they didn't mention any problems. So far as I know there are no land rigs on the west side, close enough to the water to be effected. I would think only platforms and jackups would be in any real danger.

Yepper - I now live in the southern 'burb of Atlanta.

I lived through a few NYC Evacuations - Snow and hurricane a bunch of years ago. The Snow Emergency took me 7 hours to get clear of the city. The hurricane evac took less time, but foks new in advance that it was on the way and didn't come to work.

I have no desire to go back there - even to visit.
