If the 2008 election were held today, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton would handily defeat three of the top Republicans being touted as possible candidates, a startling new survey by Fox News Opinion Dynamics shows.
In a race between Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Clinton, the New York Democrat would win by 7 points, defeating Frist 40 percent to 33 percent, according to Fox Dynamics figures cited Sunday by Angus Reid Consultants.
Matched against New York Gov. George Pataki, Clinton's margin of victory drops by 1 point, but she'd still win 41 percent to 35 percent. The former first lady would even defeat Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, 46 percent to 35 percent.
Two of the most popular Republicans, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain, were not included in the survey.
However, a Quinnipiac University survey released last week showed that Giuliani would defeat Clinton 45 percent to 43 percent if he were to run for her Senate seat in 2006.
The Fox Dynamics poll also showed that John Kerry would defeat Gov. Bush if Kerry were to run again in 2008, but by a smaller margin than Clinton - 45 percent to 37 percent.

Love it! George Allen is PERFECT! Jock, handsome, former Governor from a Southern Red state, and now a senator. And, best of all, he's very personable and telegenic. Likeability on tv is more important than people think for. Clinton had it, Bush has it, Gore and Kerry didn't. Hillary really doesn't either. They have to edit her into such small sound bites that she's tolerable but she gets very strident very quickly. Allen is smooth, a good debater, approachable, and intelligent without being an arrogant, elitest snob.

Dems bent over for Bill Clinton but I don't think that guys like Biden and Dean are going to roll over for Hillary. They have a limited window and they aren't going to sacrifice it just for the sake of being good "team" players. Their egos are too big for letting a girl get it without a fight.

Jeb is a great guy but has way too much of his own baggage. His wife was caught trying to avoid a $16,000 customs bill with designer clothes she brought back from a trip to Europe, his daughter is a certifiable drug addict, and his son has had trouble with the police over a fist fight in a former girlfriend's front yard with her new beau. Florida is doing well, but they Dems would make a huge deal of the missing ADC children.
Maybe when he's older and his kids have grown up.

And she hasn't even started moving to the right yet. Sure she has. She came out on the "right" side of immigration.

Seems like some of the new posters on this site are really DU troublemakers hanging out where they don't belong.

Your point about a right-wing spoiler candidate is well-taken. Such a person would almost certainly run against Rudy. Just because I'd support Rudy doesn't mean that enough of our fellow patriots would.
To: nj26
"can't find anybody to run against her in '06."
Yes, I suspect that's the case. No doubt "somebody" will run against her, but nobody with a chance. I think it's almost a certainty that we'll be running against Senator Hillary, not private citizen Hillary, in '08.
It is a shame that she wasn't taken down during the Clinton years. Now it may be too late. We'll have to beat her in a campaign, not the legal system.

That's what I've been saying. No one believes me.

"...Bill or some other tear jerker so that she plays up the sympathy factor. Yup, not a dry eye in the house." The sympathy vote is her bread and butter. Another FReeper posted awhile back that if Bubba dies before 2008, that casket isn't going into the ground without "Hillary in 2008" bumper stickers plastered all over it.

This is HORSE Ka-Ka.
In 1997 and 1998, GW Bush was a relative unknown and 'everyone' said the republicans had no viable candidate and Gore had a lock on the 2000 election. "Everyone" sure was right on that one weren't they.
In short, 2008 might as well be 2060. Anything can happen.

Now, if she runs against illegal immigration against a Rove-backed conservative (e.g. Frist), she could retain WI and MI, and pick up NV, CO, NM, and FL. I don't how this immigration thing has become the top issue of a race to be held four years from now. In any event with the exception of CO all those states are trending Republican and I seriously doubt most of them are going for Hillary regardless of whatever she mouths on immigration. It's Hillary for crying out loud, of I-don't-know-where-those-billing-records-the-FBI-has-been-looking-for-came-from fame.

Jeb Bush.
I like the guy, but I don't think voters will go for ANOTHER Bush. It will have the feel of a dynasty.
I think that is why he polls so bad.

These numbers are as close to worthless as they can get. Hell, the polls for the election just completed were wothless three weeks out.
