Blue States Wary of Children adopting Dollywood Values. Instant Classic.

Somebody commented on the blog site that this essay is so good why is the blogger giving it away for free. I believe that if I wrote something this well, I would want everyone to see it.

This is crisp, knowledgeable, hysterical writing. so funny and so right. Enjoy.

Y'all have GOT to read this!
It's a HOOT and a half!

"I guess you might could say we're rebels," says Rachel 'Tyffanie' Stern, 17, lighting a Merit Menthol 100. Once destined for Vassar, Stern is now living with friends after her parents kicked her out of the house for spending her bat mitzvah money on a bass boat. Last month she became the youngest Jewish female to win an event on the Bassmasters Pro Tour.

Pausing for furtive glances, several of the teens share sniffs from a bottle of Harmon Triple Heat deer scent.

"Wooo-eee, shit howdy, that's gonna bring a mess of them whitetail bucks," says 19-year old Wei-Li 'Lamar' Cheung. A former Westinghouse Science Award winner, Cheung has devoted his chemistry and biology skill to building a fledgling hunting supply business. A first generation Asian-American, Cheung says he was drawn to the group by their acceptance of minorities. "Hell, I kept tellin' all my family and teachers I wanna play fiddle, not violin," he explains. "The 'Necks accept me the way I am."

Bass and deer...reminds me of some folks I know. ;o)

I think the phrase that sets us apart from others, other than our accent is, "fixin'to".

They look at us like we're not speaking the Kings English.

Oh well, such is the life Southerners...and we love our lives.

I remember the first time I met my sisters-in-law....they kept asking me to say, "y'all" over and over. "Agin?" I asked?

I love "Boy howdy!" Grampa used to say "them jaspers" when he was talking about no-accounts.

As a Massachusetts resident I wouldn't be surprised if there really was a Patrice Lumumba Magnet School in Cambridge.

Save for later reading.

Thanks for the ping, Mears!

This is a gem, a classic, a wonderful essay. Bravo! It doesn't "git" any better than this.

The limosine has turned into a muscle car. The French wine has turned into PBR. The NY Times has turned into the Farmer's Almanac.

Don't be surprised to see that some of this is coming true. It did with my daughter. LOL!

LOL. Very funny except the part about Montessori School which is WONDERFUL. I send both my school age children to one and they are far, far ahead of their public school peers. (My oldest daughter is 5 and can multiply and divide and reads at a 2nd grade level. My 3 year old knows all of the planets, all of the continents, the names of the oceans etc).

I hear ya. From our neck of the woods if we say "about to" We would be looked upon as gettin' up on our high horse, or gettin' above our raisins.

My daughters boyfriend is from New Iberia. His cajun accent is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Ain't nuthin' like a cajun accent.

"Like countless other Friday nights, the close-knit group had made the 80 mile ritual journey to rural Belvidere, Illinois, to cruise Steak 'N' Shake and hang out at the Mills Fleet Farm parking lot"

A most excellent piece! I grew up North Shore, and hung out with someguys who went to to New Trier H.S. These guys were into D-9 Cats, loved heavy equiptment, couldn't stop talking about them. Couldn't take it all the way though. On graduating they scattered each to their separate universities..(Go IowaHawk!)

So do we, except the line of Skoal. I've never heard it called a tin, especially since the can is made of waxed cardboard or plastic.

I think the phrase that sets us apart from others, other than our accent is, "fixin'to".

Why? Nothing could exemplify correct Queen's English better than the sentence "I'm fixin' to go down town."

Well, that and the correct use of "You all", or "Y'all".
