along with a raft of DOUBLE TAXATION At least you remember it and the reason why it's unconscionable. I believe the 1986 tax bill (courtesy of the tax collector, BobDole), eliminated itemized consumer interest deduction in favor of a larger standard deduction which allegedly made it "simpler" by using an average. Or something like that, either way it was an excuse, not a real reason.
Double taxation is precisely what it was.

I also use quicken. It'll take some work, but I'll find most of it.
I remember the good old days, of shoeboxes full of receipts. That was before spreadsheet programs and a computer on every desk.

I have no clue. I have never heard of a tax like that here in Tenn.
Technically you do owe use tax if you live in TN and buy something in a state with a lower tax rate. Use tax is the difference in the rate you paid and TN's tax rate. If you buy something online and pay no sales tax, it's the same deal. But this is virtually unenforceable on the individual. Thousands of people cross the state line into KY because they have no sales tax on food. Businesses are subject to a sales tax audit, so they have to be careful about paying use taxes, but TN doesn't currently have the resources to audit individuals. If you buy something big outside TN (furniture, car, etc.) and have it shipped to TN, the shipping company will make sure you've paid the use tax before they will ship it.

I'm willing to fill that shoebox to save the bucks. But then it will probably be deductable if the sales tax excedes 25% of your income.

"Double taxation is precisely what it was."
Yep, we still get hit by our "government" today. We are grossly overtaxed..and the taxing of SS benefits is a crime against our seniors who worked and PAID IN ALL THAT FREAKIN' MONEY ALL THEIR LIVES... are DOUBLE TAXED...and now illegal aliens are being fed, educated, medicated and whatever else on our SS taxes.....
The government just keeps taking more and more OF OUR MONEY -- YET THE PUBLIC JUST PUTS UP WITH IT -- AND MARXISTS LIKE KERRY WANT TO TAKE M-O-R-E!!!

Speed Limit 55 MPH -- Enforced by Radar Actually the speed limit now on the Thruway is 65, but I agree with the tone of your post. NY is a mess. Two words: Senator Clinton.

We did but a car in Oklahoma and then paid sales tax in Tenn. I thought that it was because we had to register the car here that we had to pay sales tax. Oh well you learn something new every day. But I do remember something about people going into Virgina and buying cigarette's and then reselling them in Tenn., and getting into trouble. Anyone that reports normal purchases out of state is crazy.
To: fritzz
"We got this deduction years ago."
Yes, we did. Then our congress said thay they would take this and some other deductions away in return for lowering the rate. But, surprise, later they hiked the rates back up but did not reinstitute the deductions. Clever, no?

I'm old enough to remember when it was deductible before. You could either save all receipts, or take a flat percentage based on your income from a table in the instructions.
It was pretty nice when you bought a car or something...

Don't you DARE move to Florida and vote for Nelson. He is a RAT who needs to be out every bit as much as any other. This is the traitor who stole American tax dollars for the ultimate junket. The man should be hung for treason, not reelected!
But now that you know how I really feel--please, don't vote for Nelson. You can move to Florida, but if you're coming, vote right. There are too many Rats in Florida already.
To: Texas Federalist; So Cal Rocket
I think like TF this is a pretty easy argument, but think who's "interpreting." After all is said and done, the SupCt will not let this fly, simply because it's less money to the federal coffers. You can bet they somehow rig it to be a 'federalist' decision, too.

Very good explanation of the Use tax. Most states have them and most people are clueless.
Unless it's product for resale, in Tenn you, as a business, better pay that use tax!
