The Poor Excuse For A Debate (Joseph Farah Slams Bush Timidity And Thanks God For Swifties)
Worldnetdaily.com ^ | 10/01/04 | Joseph Farah

After watching that pitiful excuse for a debate last night, all I can say is, "Thank God for the Swift Boat vets."

Why?

Because without them and the persuasive case they have made against John Kerry for president, I am quite certain he would still be the leading candidate for president today.

The debate last night focused on foreign policy and national security issues – President Bush's strength, we're told by the pollsters. It should also be Kerry's weakness, given his vacillation on the war on Iraq and his own record of turning on American troops in Vietnam.

But that's not the way I saw it.

I tried to view the debate through the eyes of an undecided voter. And what I saw was at best a standoff. Kerry was on the offensive all night. Bush was on the defensive.

During the debate, Bush said the best way to fight the war on terrorism was to remain on offense. I agree. But I wonder why he doesn't understand the principle holds true in winning a debate, too.

There was plenty of heat, but not much light.

How much more interesting it might have been had the debate been opened up to include minor-party and independent candidates for president.

It is a national scandal that the Democrats and Republicans have been permitted to maintain a monopoly on political debate in this country. It's not healthy. It's a scandal. It so often represents a choice between bad and worse.

I was genuinely disturbed by watching that spectacle.

I heard nothing I hadn't heard before from either candidate.

The format was a joke, too. Jim Lehrer's questions were mundane, routine and predictable.

Not one question about illegal immigration – a national security crisis so severe even Time magazine recently discovered it.

Not one question about the United States continuing financial and diplomatic support for terrorists in the Palestinian Authority.

Not even one obvious question about the massive intelligence breakdown in this country that led to Sept. 11.

Pitiful. Pathetic. Predictable.

What we heard, as a result, were mere platitudes: "I can do better."

If America is to remain a free and open republic, how can we allow our political process to be rigged and closed? How can we allow the level of debate to deteriorate to such a point?

My only hope for this race now is that Bush opens up a lead so substantial that independent thinkers are freed up to vote their conscience – to break away from the dualistic thinking that dominates the American political process.

It's time to build viable third, fourth and fifth parties – to give us real choices, to ask tougher questions, to put new ideas on the national agenda.

I'm sure Bush would like to see such a lead open up, too. Yet, he didn't help himself much last night. He didn't make a strong case for another four years. And he didn't do much to persuade the American people that his opponent is a clear and present danger to our national security – which he is.

Am I disappointed?

Well, as one who has seen a few presidential debates in my life – Kennedy-Nixon, Carter-Ford, Reagan-Carter, Reagan-Mondale and more – this one is forgettable by comparison.

No wonder tens of millions have stopped watching debates – just since 1992. No wonder fewer people are bothering to vote. No wonder fewer people are paying attention to the way their country is governed.

But apathy is not the answer. It's time for Americans to renew the idea of self-government. In case you've forgotten, it means governing our own lives. It means taking responsibility for our own families, our own neighborhoods, our own communities. It means not waiting for some messiah of a presidential candidate to come along to save us.

For Joseph Farah, the President was timid. And more than that the debate did not touch on key issues like illegal immigration and support for the terrorists of Palestinian Authority. What about the intelligence breakdown in this country that led to 9/11? No question about that either. We got more of the same. As Joe sees it, if Bush is re-elected, he has the Swifties to thank for it. We need more choices to revitalize our political life and to rediscover the American habit of self-government its time to take responsibility for ourselves and our Nation. Let's not wait for some President to come along to do for us what we ought to be doing for ourselves.

My mother watched the debate for some reason, and just e-mailed me saying Kerry had lots of charisma, but that she will still vote for Bush.

She said Bush was pitiful. This from a lady that doesn't follow politics like we do.

I just watched the debate.

I loved Bush. I didn't see the negative things depicted on the FR live thread.

I'm serious. I thought Bush did absolutely great. I love this man!

I suggest Joseph and perhaps you go read the transcript of the debate. Perhaps you are all surprised that the president doesn't always come across well speaking in this formats, but most people already knew that. He did a good job if you just read what he said. Joseph has no use for him anyway.

Are you under the impression Bush submitted those questions?

Well its true Joe doesn't back the President for re-election. He also loathes Kerry. Quite simply, he doesn't see much in the choices the American people have.

When Lehrer asked Bush about Kerry's character, this was the perfect opportunity to challenge Kerry's post-vietnam, anti-war activities. Bush opted to play it safe; shouldn't have. This would have been "the sound bite" of the debate.

I believe there's a well of resentment in this country for what the anti-war left did to us in Vietnam. Kerry's not only one of them, he's one of their leaders. Farah's right, the Swift Boat veterans continue to tap into this well of resentment, helping Bush.

Joe should've had a nice snifter of brandy, and thought about this a little while before blasting it into cyber space. He's going to feel like such an ass in the morning.

The moderator should have asked them. Or is there something the media and the politicians prefer NOT to have us know?

Bush Sucked. Any Freeper on this sight could have put Kerry down for the count. The Bush Campaign is in the prevent defense and they have forgotten that the best defense is a good offense. I was embarrassed by Bush.

The moderator should have asked them.

No kidding. Now ask yourself WHY Lehrer only asked questions about the ONLY topic that Kerry has left to trash Bush with?

The moderator WROTE the questions himself.

You and Farah should think about that.

Kind of hard to be on the offensive when the ball is never in your hands.

Blatantly biased towards making W look bad in my opinion.

So with that said I think W held his own and Kerry was the one that made the prominent errors.

Good reason they don't talk about it. It's become a national disgrace, and now a national security time bomb for every single American.

Joseph Farah isn't voting for Bush anyway. I couldn't care less what Joseph Farah had to say about Bush or the Swifties. He has no use for Bush. Joseph isn't even a Conservative.

I agree. W had a lot of facts, in terms of his relationships with relationships with diplomats. .. Regardless, W did Not exempilfy Kerry's treason and traitorists statements in 1971. Maybe W will get on this piece in the next debate. W is too weak so far....

That being the case, Bush wins this debate because Kerry let slip soooo many disastrous quips that well might have been forgotten by the viewers, but which will be ballooned into importance by Talk Radio over the next few weeks.

One thing I noticed was that our President used a solid foundation on which to build the arguments of this debate. Liberty, Democracy and Freedom. Matter of fact, going through the debate I noted that - President Bush used the words:
Liberty - 4 times,
Freedom - 7 times,
Democracy - 4 times
and Free - 20 times.

And how rightly so. What good is Liberty and Freedom and Democracy if first YOU are not FREE. Kerry used the words:
Democracy twice,
Freedom twice,
Kerry used the word "Free" - twice. - - - Never used the word "Liberty".
