EXCLUSIVE

STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:

Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in question—and their source—vigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.

Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where—if I knew then what I know now—I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.

But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.

Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.

Who is so radioactive that CBS would do this for him/her?

It's obvious. Robin Rather.

Actually, the entire world is owed an apology because XXX Blathers fraud could have had world wide negative effects.

My first name is Dan and I refuse to sully that name by calling Rather by it. For me, he should be totally censored, therefore, the XXX.

Everyone knows this is not over. Rather should be run out on a rail, put to pasture or forced to clean highways in East Texas for the remainder of his miserable days.

There will be repercussions everywhere. No doubt.

And many good things may come out of this mess. It may be a boost for the President; we may tie the DNC to the mess that would be miraculous.

Above and beyond it all, the single most important effect of “Rathergate” is probably the thing that will shake up CBS and the MSM longer than any other. It’s the one result, which will change future.

This marks the victory, the acknowledgement and the wielding sword of the Free Republic and the growing number of out-spoken, truth-seeking, pajama-clad Americans who will not go quietly into the night and accept everything “fed us” on television news by 60 Minutes, 20/20, Katie Couric or any other loud-mouth, lying, left-wing, agenda-pumping moron who believes that we the people are not capable discovering the truth on their own.

Dead now is the notion that the average American is content to sit in a Barcolounger and flip through TV channels with a remote control and buy the crap that is incessantly fed to us night after night, day after day.

The message to journalist everywhere…we are watching…we are listening…and your message had best be true and above reproach. The free reign you have had for decades to feed the American people what you want them to hear is over. We aren’t buying your crap anymore.

The message to their corporate sponsors…be very careful who you support. The American people…the truly free of this Republic will hold you accountable for your support of those in the media with a “not-so-hidden” political agenda.

All of you…Viacom…Rather…and their corporate sponsors work for us…the consumer.

We are sick of your crap and we are not buying it anymore!

I for one am proud to be here and witness these historical events.

Thanks to all in the Free Republic!

It seems that Burkett has been tagged as the fall guy.

Rather is going to try to float by on his weak statement.

===

Who will be held accountable?

Rather's statement is an admission that he was easily duped (the forgeries were obvious to anyone who bothered to look).

Will other 'players' be named?

Will Mary Mapes take the fall for CBS?

===

This isn't over, although we can expect MSM to try to bury it now that Burkett has been named.

FOX pointing out that CBS (aka the Ministry of Truth) does not say that the documents are forged only that they cannot authenticate them.

I suppose that means they still think there's an outside chance that they are okay. Give me a break!!!

Carl Cameron was just on Fox saying Maxie confirmed there was contact with Burkett. He also stated said that Kerry was pushing this 60 Minutes piece as a "must see" to his traveling press for several weeks PRIOR to it coming out. Carl Cameron, as we all know, is one of them traveling with Kerry. This confirms with The Hill's article on the DNC producing the Fortunate Son bit with the CBS memos. So, what comes first - Rather's hit piece or the DNC's hit piece.

For legal reasons, it would be foolish for Burkett to admit that he was the forger

You're right .. so why would he admit to it?
