Per FoxNews: Pentagon questioning PO Box Number
FoxNews | 10 SEP 2004 | me

Posted on 09/10/2004 11:09:40 AM PDT by aft_lizard

James Rosen just reported that the Pentagon questions the use of a PO Box on a memo, and that the PO Box may never have been used by that unit saying it seems highly unlikely that they would have PO Box containing sequential numbers. Standard military practice has always been to place the actual physical address on the letter head.

I pulled out an old AF Pamphlet on Writing last night and the 0 before the 4 was not used in those days either but here are is the real address and the forged one:

Official Address:

DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
HEADQUARTERS 147TH FIGHTER WING (TANG)
ELLINGTON AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS 77030

vs the forgery

11th Fighter Intercept Squadron
P. O. Box 34567
Houston, Texas 77034

Why aren't you people listening to people who worked or were in the Air Force back then. You cannot take an address today and compare it to 1972 and note two different zip codes for the Squadron and the AF did NOT use Post Office Boxes.

Yes, zips change, but usually it's due to expansion
the old zip still will exist.
Generally if it's due to expansion a new zip will be assigned to cover
some of the area under the old zip.
USPS doesn't move the zip to somewhere else.

77034 still exists.

PO Boxes used to be numbered one up in each Post Office, so PO Box 1 might
exist in Detroit, New York, and thousands of other Post Offices.
Now in large offices they are generally assigned by
the local Post Master to the various stations, branches, and annexes in numerical blocks.
Many larger offices will assign a unique zip code to a PO Box section.
Example: 49501 is the box section in Grand Rapids main office,
while 49514 in the box section at the Grand Rapids NW Station.

Bingo! AF did not use post office boxes and a document removing him from flying status would have come from the Flight Surgeon for missing the physical to the Commander of the Squadron and would have received a 1st Ind to the letter that would have been handed to 1st Lt Bush! Not a Memo for an official action -- not then -- not now. Even then this Memo is not formatted correctly!

I'm wating to see if Rather has the See BS news at the 3 o'clock break and
what he has to say. See if he slinks around the memogate.

hehe! You know, I NEVER EVER watch anything but FOX News. Maybe a
few times a year, I might check out the Lamestream Media's lead-in stories.

I was thinking earlier that this may be ONE of those rare times I check out
See BS to see how Rather tries to handle this. I bet their phones have been
hammered today.

No P.O. Boxes exist on bases. The format is name, office, unit, base, ZIP. Because everyone on a base is there working in an official capacity.

Guard might have been a little looser...but how about this scenario:

"GWB: I want to send you this (....)
Killian: Send it to my personal address so I am sure to see it ASAP.:

Some enterprising media lurker might ask the Killian family if they remember a "PO Box 34567".

If they do, and it was one personal to the LtCol or family, bang - the forger got the box address off the released letter Bush wrote to Killian.

Not back in 1970 or that time frame -- no building numbers, no streets addresses, etc. I put in a suggestion to number the buildings and use them for addresses and got it shot down so I know for a fact that they were never used.

You are WRONG! The Pentagon is right -- they did not use post office boxes then.

So who invented the page 16 letterhead with the post office box? Or did you even bother to look at it?

" to create a Watergate-style faux-scandal where the Dems fake the doc, make it easy to spot as fake, then blame the GOP for faking it, which the media picks up and runs with, and then they start calling for defeating/impeaching and prosecuting President Bush."

Hmmmm, interesting. "Double think" the "double think", with another "double think"! When will the thinking ever end?

Because the post office box exists today doesn't mean that it was the address of the Squadron which would have been against regs that gave you your address -- Air Force did not pay for post office boxes.

Thanks! Same here -- been going through documents and have found old address pages for some of the AFLC detachments and even they didn't have post office boxes. All mine look like yours.

You could be right but wonder why didn't he have a post office box on base -- I know at Wright-Patt, Kelly AFB, Tinker AFB, and everyplace else we have been, we had a post office box on base.

Oh, I agree.

I am just curious if POBox 3456 ever was in the zip in question.

I personally doubt it.

I knew "PO Box 34567" was suspicious...

You mean your local post office doesn't have 34,567 post office boxes?

The problem is that this was an official action and had to come from the squadron which would not have had a post office box. Col Killian may have had one but not the Squadron.

Not to mention that he was grounding Bush and that would come from the Flight Surgeon to the Commander of the Squadron not to the head of personnel. The Commander of the Squadron would have put a 1st Ind on the letter and it would not have been a memo.

How do I know -- I used to work for the Command Surgeon who was also one of the few Flight Surgeon Generals in the AF and we had Flight Surgeons that reported to our office. It is serious business when you ground someone and the Flight Surgeon would have notified their parent command of the impending action and the head Flight Surgeon of the Command would have conconcurred and then it would have gone to the Squadron Commander in this instance who would have given it to Lt Bush. It would have become part of the official record.

A Memo would never suffice for an official document in the AF to ground someone or tell them they were going to be grounded. Never, ever!

I bet their phones have been hammered today.

You can bet on that. I think there was a thread earlier today that had the caller get screamed at by someone at See BS. I just heard Gov Perry got one of those letters that was set to ignite upon opening.

BTW, dan blather is not reporting the hourly news for See BS. BLAH HA HA!!
