Understanding the needs of people: 47% said they trust Kerry to understand the needs of people like themselves, while 44% trusted Bush to understand their needs.

This one gets to me. Hard for me to digest that 47% of folks would trust this liberal elite-snob (out-of-touch, married-to-a-billionairess weenie...need I go on!) to "understand" people's needs over such an honest, humble, decent man as George W. Bush.
No. 1: I don't NEED the president to "understand" my needs.
No. 2: President Bush has spent the majority of his life in/near the rural areas of Texas while Kerry has spent his in the liberal northeast--home to the country's most elite snobs. What could he possibly know about "ordinary" folks' needs...living off the government trough and being married to a billionairess.

Now this is just sad...

Moral of the Story DON'T Trust the Corporate Media...

Oh quit being alarmist people...this is one poll by an unknown polling group who used the ******* telepone...it means jack ****.

They think Time would use a fly-by-night polling outfit just to tick them off?

I'll try and one up them...

Those sob's at TIME are just trying to make conservatives cocky so we think we don't have to vote! Those tricky bastards!

I think Kerry jumped the shark last night with his mid-night rally.

The media knows he can't win after that embarassment.

Kerry about so bad that MSNBC cut away from his speech half way with Chris Matthews saying "well this is President Bush's night."

The very idea of the midnight rally was petty, the speech itself was even more petty. A lot of the left are starting to see Kerry for what he is, they never liked him to begin with, they only liked him because they wanted to beat Bush. Now that they see Kerry as a lost cause, a lot of themthe are mad at him for failing them, and as a embarassment to them.

"Joe Lockhart on CNN saying that the election is not going to be decided by a bunch of RIGHT-WING KOOKS (Swift-boat vets)."

Mr. Lockhart, I am not going to call you an A-hole. It would be insulting to A-holes because at least they have a vital purpose.

I WILL call you an idiot.

I think Zell was a positive for the convention and that the speech will be broken down and used for campaign commercials, IMO.

Based on the fact that the press lies with these polls, you have to add 5 points to this for Bush at least beyond what is shown here as well, again in my opinion.

I saw her (Dowd) yesterday on Aaron Brown's show...

How'd you like that voice of hers? She sounds like The Nanny (Fran Dresher) minus any and all of the charm.

I may be a party pooper, but one poll does not an election make, even if it is conducted by a liberal magazine and would appear to be against its own ideological interest. Kerry has been hit with a string of setbacks, the GOP managed their convention well, and the mass street protests in New York were a Godsend to the Republicans.

However, there are some sobering realities the Bush-Cheney campaign must face. The race remains winnable, but here are the facts.

* The Democrats still have the MSM on their side. Their clout is considerably weaker than in the past, but it is hardly gone, especially among those over 50.
* The big Democrat moneybags may still prop up a faltering Kerry campaign to prevent a tsunami that could sweep liberal Congressional stalwarts like Tom Daschle and Patsy Murray out of office.
* There is a solid 35-40% of the voting public that would almost always vote for a Democrat. Blacks, Hispanics (except Cubans), and Jews (except Orthodox) do not appear to be shifting their Democratic preference much.
* There are a number of states, with at least 150 electoral votes, that it would take divine intervention to see a GOP victory: CA, HI, WA, IL, NY, NJ, MD, DC, CT, RI, MA, VT.
* Big city political machines, often run by corrupt black politicians, are still capable of stuffing ballot boxes. Remember that the Democrats were corrupt (think Boss Tweed, Prendergast, Richard Daley the elder) long before they were liberal in the modern sense.
* Demographics must be reckoned with. Over 20 years of virtually unchecked immigration (legal or not) have boosted the numbers of Democrat voters. More than any other factor, immigration from Mexico has been the reason for California's leftward lurch since the days of Ronald Reagan, William Knowland, and S.I. Hayakawa.
* Generational shift must be recognized. In 1972 and 1984, the G.I. Generation was mostly alive. That is not the case in 2004. Even when those folks were economic liberals (and many were - they were responsible for the Great Society welfare state legislation), they were usually social conservatives.
* Ideological shift is a problem as well. This is most notable in the white professional classes, especially outside the South and lower Midwest. Clinton and Gore carried most of the collar counties around New York, Chicago, etc., that were solid supporters of Eisenhower, Nixon, and even Reagan.

We need to work hard to win this one. The Swift Boat veterans and the sleazy looking protesters will largely be forgotten in 60 days. This election will still be won in the "purple" states, like it or not.

"Kerry's childish, drunken/possibly stoned, semi-coherant rant last night "

Kerry has been exhibiting all the classical signs of cocaine abuse. Someone said he was frequently rubbing his nose. Alcohol and/or pot and/or sedatives are usually used to calm the jitters. Maybe Terazza wasn't there to give him one of her pharmaceuticals.

What has happened to Mo Dowd? She looks FREAKY and sounds even worse! It seems she is TRYING to become Catherine Zeta Jones. I almost fell out of my chair laughing at her peaking from behind that hair.

"I think W's gonna take 38-40 states."

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but after Arnie's speech I've been thinking California might actually be in play this year.

Tucker Carlson called the speech oddly disjointed and suggested Kerry shouldn't be let out in public without a scripted speech.

Shoot, I've been saying that for months. Can't tell you how glad I am the dems don't listen to me. :-)

This bounce is huge out of CNN no less! And they didn't keep polling to try and bring it down like they did with Kerry to bring his up which didn't work!

What a great way to end the Convention and start the weekend! Thanks for the ping!

"I guess people don't like Kerry's new hair color . . . . . ."

Now be nice. He only had a bit of a wash put in to highlight the gray. Or something.

Maybe. If Kerry can stay sober.

Actually, the more I think about Kerry's speech, the less I liked it. Aside from the obvious silly gaffes (five words, red sox), he said some pretty stupid things: he said he wouldn't be questioned on his fitness. In other words, he feels like he doesn't have to answer Zell Miller's charges, he can just blow them off because he served in Vietnam, and that's his "get into office free" card. The man acts like he's entitled to the office, and that's going to rub people the wrong way. His contention that he doesn't have to answer questions about his record is not going to work--because the Republicans will continue to bombard him with exactly those questions.

I turned to the speech a bit late so I might have missed when he said that (although it was one big, angry, stream so I very well might have heard it), I read about it here (via Instandpundit)

I thought the angry ranting on the economy would be effective. Not that I think JFK has any real plans for our economy--and he didn't give any specific plans in his speech--but the anger might resonate with voters who feel like Bush isn't doing enough for our economy, doesn't take it seriously enough.

And Pres Bush is cancelling one of the debates on top of everything else. No wonder the media was in a meltdown this week. Gotta love it!
