Photo Essay: BBC's 10 Photos of NYC Anti-Bush Protesters
BBC On Line ^

Posted on 08/29/2004 7:14:33 PM PDT by yankeedame

"Tens of thousands gathered in New York on Sunday to protest at the policies of US President George W Bush."

Police kept an eagle eye on the protests, which took place on the eve of the Republican Party convention, due to start in New York on Monday.

Marchers mocked the Bush administration using colourful props of the kind normally seen at carnivals.

A giant dragon was set alight on the streets of the city that suffered most from the 9/11 attacks.

Many who marched said they were expressing their opposition to President Bush rather than support for his Democratic rival, John Kerry.

Countless campaigns converged for the day to protest against the government's stance on issues as varied as abortion, foreign policy and civil liberties.

Police say they made about 300 arrests during a protest that, organisers say, attracted more than 250,000 people.

Observers said the gathering in places resembled the demonstrations against the Vietnam war that rocked the US in the last century.

Roughly 1,000 flag-draped caskets were carried through the streets: A symbol of the US dead from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Some placards were more poignant than others. Here, a slain soldier is remembered by his relatives.

Also the owner of the DeLorean in Back to the Future. He has white hair now, though.

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is a group of veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, I'd like to bet that membership in this band of beatniks probably runs about 1% military veteran, and 99% unwashed hippie in surplus store DCUs.

Just a wild guess there.

You are forgetting the subtle racism of the left. When brown people die in foreign countries, they bit their lips and say, "Gee, that's a shame. Someone should think about doing something." Conservatives look at the same suffering and say, "What should we do and when should we do it?" The libs don't care about non-voting foreigners croaking.

You could have caused them to writhe in agony by spraying the crowd with soap. The horror, the horror! ;-)

Thanks for the link. What a bunch of losers! These are the first pictures of the protests I have seen. I've been ignoring the MSM for the last few days.

May Sgt Baker RIP. I wonder how he would feel about his brother? Most of these are just young losers with nothing better to do with their lives. I don't recall a photo essay of the protesters at the dimwit convention in Boston. You know, the one's kept in a cage. These seem to be free to roam the streets.

Just like Kerry's FAKE Vietnam Veterans that testified at the Winter Soldiers Debacle, These jerks are Iraq Vets like my @ss!

I'm still not entirely sure what the country was thinking back in 70-72, but I'll tell you this much. Times have changed. If these guys step forward with wild tales of atrocities, they'd better be prepared to back them up. If they admit to war crimes, they'll be charged personally. If they accuse others, they'd better bring real evidence.

This is 2004, folks. Half the guys in Iraq have digital or disposible cameras. You can get either at any AAFES stand there. So, claiming 'the whole place is run like Abu Ghraib but we don't have any proof' won't fly. My team alone brought back almost 500 pictures, and we were only on a 'John Kerry special' short rotation. I'm sure most units have amassed thousands of photos over a full year.

So where are the atrocities? Or are the three IVAW guys the only honorable ones left, and the rest of the military is just covering it up?

"a gathering of socialist, communist, anarchist and other freaks." I consider it a blessing in disguise. Just think if these mental morons worked at Nasa! They're better off left drooling in the streets. A nice outlet for the roving asylum aka liberal America.

Just goes to show, you can choose to die for your country, but you can't choose your relatives, nor how they will defame your name after you are gone.

Does America want these great unwashed yucks running the country and sticking their hands in our pockets, pilfering our hard-earned money to finance their lifestyles?

Let's pray for the reelection of President Bush!

You have to realize it is the sheep herdering media who is giving the liberal sheeple the attention to promote their pro-communist agenda.

....I agree, let's keep praying for favor from above. Even thought, the enemy is showing strong but the the spirit of the Lord much more stronger. There is peace in the mist of the turmoil. GOD is good and he will complete what he has started. Our President will be reelected. His spirit bears witness with the spirit of HIS children.
