YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The mayor of this Democratic stronghold known for its steel industry job losses is endorsing President Bush for his Republican re-election campaign, Bush's campaign said Monday.
Democratic mayors of the biggest cities in the battleground state are one of Democratic candidate John Kerry's main supports in Ohio. Republicans control the Legislature and all statewide elected offices.
Mayor George M. McKelvey, in his second term, planned to pledge his support for Bush at a news conference scheduled for Monday afternoon, Bush campaign spokesman Kevin Madden said.
"He believes the president is providing the leadership the country needs with regard to growing the economy and making the country safer," Madden said.
McKelvey refused to discuss details of his announcement to be made with the chairwoman of Bush's campaign in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. The (Youngstown) Vindicator first reported McKelvey's endorsement Monday.
McKelvey and his wife were guests of Bush at the White House last May, after the president visited Youngstown to promote community health centers.

Wow, there are a few right-thinking Democrats out there. Zell Miller, Koch, St. Paul MN mayor, and now this guy.
Bush endorsed by the Democrat mayor of Youngstown, Ohio? That's seriesly hugh! With Bush continuing to make inroads in blue-collar Democrat areas, the RATs are running out of areas they can carry by large enough numbers to win states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and West Virginia.
St. Paul Mayor wassisname = Mayor Randy Kelly
Still being castigated by all the liberal pansies in St Paul. There's even a pathetic drive to get him recalled because of his 'betrayal' to the constituents of St Paul.
The recall will flop like Kerry's position on any given issue.

FYI, in North Carolina, the Democratic governor, facing a tough re-election, was "too busy" to join Kerry in Charlotte last week. He can read the hand-writing on the wall.
Watch the other RAT elected politicians. They are recoiling from Kerry, and notice that none of them has spoken up defending Kerry on the swift boat stuff, because they think he is lying.
Ha, take that Springsteen...He wrote a song entitled "Youngstown" about how evil free-trade destroyed the steel industry, on his god-awful "Ghost of Tom Joad" solo album a few years back...

Besides, Hugh Hewitt is from Warren, just outside Youngstown. He must be having an effect on his home town.

Don't fool yourself. There are plenty of people in Y-Town that know - and always knew - that Traficant is an ass.

I'm originally from the Youngstown area, too, and visit the in-laws about every 6 weeks. McKelvey is not running for re-election, so this is not connected to any appeal for votes. I hope to think is that what is happening here is the genuine judgment of a person who does reflect the majority of the white-ethnic population and even the church-going black population: very conservative in social issues, but demanding government to solve problems. Such people are against abortion and gay marriage, etc, but are assume that government's job is to provide ME with a job. So I think McK's decision here is more connected to the hope that the next Bush term will bring some largesse to the Mahoning Valley, because God knows that 8 years of Clinton only gave the area some new prisons.

I really think that St Paul's traditional blue-collar population is more Republican that our local media would like the world to think; our leaders know this, hence their 'rightward' turn. They know who 'butters their bread", so to speak.
Some say he was a scapegoat.............but I'm not sure.
McKelvey has been sounding pretty Republican for some time now. Might be nice to see him run against Tim Ryan, but I don't know to which district he belongs.
