It's dog-lovers vs. cat lovers

Election: It's the Cat People vs. the Dog Lovers Written by Burt Prelutsky Sunday, August 15, 2004

All the pundits who are forecasting the November election, busily analyzing blue states, red states, and those all-important purple swing states, are spinning their wheels. At the risk of sounding even more presumptuous than usual, I contend that they are wasting their time and yours. If you want to know who's going to emerge victorious, all you really need to do is find out how many people have cats living with them and how many have dogs. The cat people, I have decided, will go overwhelmingly for Kerry; the dog lovers will do the same for Bush. It isn't simply that women, who often prefer felines to canines, tend to vote Democratic. It really goes to the nature of the animals........

I guess I want to think that a part of this makes sense but I wonder always about the people who own both cats and dogs. My boss has both and he's in the Bush camp. However, I will say that everyone I know (except one person) that has cats is going to Kerry.

Your conclusion is fogged by emotion, proving you are a closet Democrat!

A cat is a born (conservative)Republican. It will survive! It needs no 'pack' to hunt with... it hunts alone and quite efficiently if I may add. It has no qualms about killing its prey.

Emotion is never a factor in this proccess... it is an instinct that lies close beneath a cats behaovioral surface... not embedded within eons of 'cultivated' genetic tampering.

Dogs are Democrats. They expect the traditional hand-out... and are fiercely loyal to the provider. Even the toughest of dogs are no more Republican than John McCain is! Joe Lieberman is a more accurate example of canine behavior.

I was drying off from my shower this morning when the new cat brought a live bird in through the kitty door and let it loose at my feet. Try getting that kind of breakfast service from a dog.

Thanks for the ping! Love seeing pictures of our FReeper canines and felines!

Our three cats all support Bush/Cheney. The older, more experienced cat (20 years) recoils when sKerry appears on TV. Their 'right-thinking' dalmation sister recently died at 13.

Our family has always included 1-3 dogs and 3-4 cats with the requisite (R) after their name. The author's theory is baloney!

Hmmmm. I didn't know about the two coats. I don't know what kind his dogs had. Knowing my husband, I'm pretty sure he didn't have any kind of professional show grooming done. I'd guess, based on what you mentioned, that the wiry topcoat isn't allergenic, but the bottom coat can cause problems? If we have dogs in the future, I am planning to do some heavy duty research on the allergy issue, maybe even borrow a dog or two to test my husband's reactions. I had hoped since the boxers are short haired dogs, that the allergy would be less severe, but unfortunately that isn't the case. Luckily for us, the boxers are so much a part of the family that my husband puts up with the discomfort!

We have 3 cats and 3 dogs, love 'em all equally - but differently. Your picture is sick and disgusting no matter what species of roadkill involved. And so are you for posting it!

Cats are NOT hopelessly loyal nor do they possess unconditional love. I am a cat person, not a dog person at all, and I think you are confusing the essential natures of the two species.

Cats can be very loyal and very loving, but you have to earn it. If you mistreat them, you're toast.

My orange velociraptors who pretend to be cats hunt as a tag team, and bring home not only mice, but rats, squirrels, rabbits, moles, voles, shrews, chipmunks, snakes, lizards, and birds of all sizes up to and including crows. Even a dead fish, once. All left on the front doorstep in various stages of consumption and decomposition.

Shrews, for example, are left whole and pristine. Snakes are usually half eaten. Squirrels they leave only the tail. Most birds, only the feathers, feet and beaks are left. They don't eat much of the crows.

They are Republicats.

That's a really nice looking dog you have. Is it as much fun as s/he seems?

I need them at my house. We are over run with voles. They chewed two huge holes in my watergarden liner this past winter and ate all my bulbs (Cannas, etc.) My husband has been wearing out the air rifle and .22 and still can't get ahead! We have 44 acres in the country but our house sits just a few feet off the road so I don't let my JRT's run loose. There wouldn't be a rat or vole in 1/2 mile if they did. :-) I wish I could talk him into an outside cat or two.

Huh. I must have perfect cats then. Each has their own quirks, but their underlying characteristics are pretty much the same as my dog. They may plot against each other but they still love me. ;)

We adopt stray cats so have had many different personalities, from clinging/needy to indifference. The nicest ones are loving but far more independent than dogs.

You can see "my" kitty on my profile. She loves to be around me but at a little distance. Right now she is curled up on a nearby windowsill in the sunshine. She loves to be brushed but hates to be cuddled and will struggle to be put down, then rub up against my ankles. She wants affection but on her terms.
