Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates (FMA), a Republican polling and strategic consulting firm based in Alexandria, VA, has just completed their second likely voter survey with interviews conducted ONLY in the 19 battleground states.
The battleground states are defined as those in which the Bush and Kerry campaigns have been focusing their paid media efforts throughout the campaign.
Nearly 6 in 10 likely voters claim that they that they recently saw, read or heard something about the TV ad Swift Boat Veterans for Truth released and began airing in several key battleground states questioning the truthfulness of Senator Kerrys Vietnam War record.
Among those who claimed to have seen, read or heard something about the ad, a majority overall and among undecided voters said it would not impact their vote either way.
However to the extent it did impact voting intentions, it was a negative for Sen. Kerry by as much as nearly a 3 to 1 margin.
Make no mistake -- controversy surrounding potential dirty laundry still sells in American politics and this is a sterling example of it. But most surprising is that despite Sen. McCains swift and very public repudiation of this ad and the lingering questions on the veracity of the charges, it still ends up being a net negative for Kerry especially among crucial undecided voters.
In a close race where every little bit counts, Kerry cant afford to sustain too many minor hits like this. said Tony Fabrizio, who served as chief pollster for Bob Doles 96 Presidential campaign.
Does anyone have a direct link to this Fabrizio press release?
Way to go Swifties! You serve your country in its time of need again!
If these "undecided" voters say it won't impact their vote either way, even if they find out that JFin'K is Major-League JFin'K liar, why don't they just admit being a DUmmycrat sympathizer and go back to DU where they belong!
To say it wouldn't affect your vote shows you have rocks in your head if you find out the truth and disregard it! The least they could do is NOT vote at all!
Personally, I don't consider this to be minor.
Minor hits?? A blatant lie printed in the congressional record and numerous other places over the years and not even being corroborated by his crew, is minor??
Not only that, it tears down kerry's credibility while boosting the Swiftees' credibility. I think it's a winner on both counts.
JFK is reacting so badly to this, that he is making the charges famous. Compare that to the Bush Camp's silence to the Democrat hit books.
Methinks Kerry doth protest too much.
Here's hoping JF Kerry hasn't read this somewhere. :-))
Was LBJ still president at this time?
Nor do I!
Apparently the Kerry camp, and their press partners in crime don't either. Or are they swarming because they happy little termites?
Heard from the Kerry Camp ... In-coming! In-coming!
"Minor hits?" LOL, these guys are clueless. Its more like a torpedo to the prow of a campaign stalled in the water.
BTTT!

Richard Nixon, President from January 20, 1969 to August 8, 1974.
This is one of those things that doesn't have to reach a giant Watergate like level on the national news to be effective. All that has to happen is that people see this ad, maybe read some of the book, hear people talking, and then it sits in the back of their mind nagging at them right up until they actually, literally vote.
It's like a nuclear version of the George W. DUI thing in 2000, which many think shifted 3% back to Gore (based on polls). All that needs to happen is a seed of doubt. In fact, it probably is MORE effective if it is constant noise rather than a huge, big thing the regular media can shape.
Dear *******,
I'm interrupting John Kerry's dispatches from the road to tell you about something that will make you angry, but which is important for you to hear.
We knew it was coming: the Bush campaign and several allied right-wing groups are using August to launch a vicious smear attack against John Kerry. They think we're vulnerable this month because while George Bush is still able to raise money for attack ads, Kerry had to stop fundraising at the Democratic convention last week. They're taking this opportunity to go for the jugular.
We need you to join us in this fight today by supporting the Democratic Party.

The worst of the current wave of attacks is coming from a Republican-funded group called "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth." (I'll call them by a more accurate name: Swift Boat Veterans for Bush.) The group is led by a longtime Republican operative and financed by GOP contributors with strong ties to George Bush. Its function in the overall Republican strategy is this: tear down John Kerry since Bush has no record or vision to run on.
The swift boat ad is full of lies. Thirteen men who never served with John Kerry lie about knowing him and viciously attack his record. It is a new low for the Republicans.
Every time they have attacked us like this, it has only made us stronger. When they ran dishonest attack ads (like the unbelievable new one on the air right now), thousands of new supporters flocked to our campaign to give us the resources we need to fight back on the airwaves.
Now that the general election has begun, they're hoping things are different. They're going to be sorely disappointed because we are not alone. The Democratic National Committee is well prepared to take on this fight.
And therefore I'm asking you: everything you did for our campaign, please do now for our Democratic Party. Give the party the resources it needs to fight against these right-wing attacks:

The Democratic Party is responsible for putting organizers and volunteers into the field and turning out the millions of votes we need to win. We literally cannot win this election without the party.

You and I know that if we so much as yield an inch to George Bush and the Republicans this month, we'll live to regret it. In fact, we may live to regret it for four long years. Join with me in supporting the Democratic Party today.
Thank you,

Now we know the real reason why Senator Waffle didn't resign his Senate seat.

All responses I have heard, except one WSJ editorial by Jim Rassmassan (sp?), has been ad-hominum, not factual refutations. Even J. Rass. did not refute the substance of the SBV's charges.
Personally, I agree with other writers ("moderates"). Though it's likely that Kerry dummied up documentation for his metals, the Navy bought it, and it's a settled issue. The Cambodia issue is a straw dog, i.e. it won't matter either way. The issue Kerry cannot overcome, the primary issue is why he left a hot-combat theator 8 months early. No man of character could walk away from his command, his crew, in the middle of a combat situation. He might be carried away (i.e. dead or wounded), but he would say "got my three medals.. bye boys, good luck, keep your heads down". That was the action of a coward and/or opportunist, not a hero, and not a man qualified to be CIC.
His post-war anti-American activities were that of a free American. I disagree with them, but they do not disqualify him for high office. Absent direct evidence of collaboration with enemy agents, his war protests were legal and Constitutional.
J.F. Kerry made himself forever unfit for command when he walked away from his during combat in 1968.
