What Tom Brokaw would have done in response to "America is under attack."

Posted on 08/06/2004 4:26:52 AM PDT by The G Man

On Imus this morning, Tom Brokaw was talking about how when he went to see Fahrenheit 911 and it got to the part where Bush sat there for 7 minutes, he (Brokaw) kept thinking, "You just wanted the guy to stand up and say (GET THIS!):

'Sorry, kids. The President has to go. America is under attack.'

What the??? Yeah, Tom, THAT'S what he should've done! Scare the crap out of a bunch of little kids by telling them "AMERICA IS UNDER ATTACK!"

Two things, I work in a Public arena and I control Video feeds that are displayed thruout the area.

When the first feed came in of the first jet I had it redistributed. By the time the second jet hit, hundreds of people had gathered around to watch what was going on.

The expressions I saw were of disbelief, shock, dazed, scared shitless.

Now I ask Anyone what would have happened had the President upon hearing the news stood up in front of a class of second graders and made a statement that America was under attack and left.

First the room would have turned to mayhem. The kids would have started crying, screaming and other signs of hysteria.
The Teacher probably would have broke down and cried.

The Media would have Immediately feed that to the National news outlets causing even more hysteria throughout the Country.

Followed up by Idiots like Blowhard announcing on National Feeds that the President has gone into hiding.

What a load of Crap these idiots push.

I am not a supporter of Bush's domestic policies but he couldn't have handled the situation any more responsably that he did.

My take on the Brokaw comment was a little different. He was commenting on watching "F-9/11" and how the reaction, including his, was to do something. Since people were watching this w/ the benefit of hindsight, that's a pretty reasonable reaction. You're watching a movie where you know the ending so you naturally root for the good guy to act quicker than he actually does. Brokaw's tone was not critical. Also, he was critical of Moore and the film and noted the wrong facts and distortions of the movie.

I think you're correct. As I understand it, 7 minutes of F9/11 is nothing but watching Bush sit in the classroom. 7 minutes in a movie is an eternity, Moore intended it to make the audience feel uncomfortable & edgy. A cheap shot (like all of them) on Moore's part, but Brokaw is apparently just acknowledging that it's effective.

No. Brokaw is talking about after the SECOND plane hit and Andy Card interrupted the President and whispered to him "A second plane has his the second tower. America is under attack." At that point the President waited for 7 minutes as the story was read to the schoolchildren. Kerry criticized the President for waiting (on the heels of Michael Moore's use of the footage in F911) and said he would have excused himself right then and there. This is what Brokaw was weighing in on this morning when he said that he would have actually told these kids "America is under attack."

You're missing my point. I understand that Brokaw MAY not have been critical. I'm talking about what he (Brokaw) says that HE would have said to those kids ... that "America is under attack"

He probably would have done what he did when he learned that i42 had attacked Juanita Broaddrick -- tried to pretend that it never happened.

I think someone is going to have to get the transcripts of this morning's Imus program because I heard something different than you did G Man. I really think that Brokaw was, in his own way, defending President Bush. He stated the question as if to say "is that the question one would or should ask." I think Brokaw was making the point that it was not the question to ask.

Ah, shoot. Maybe I'm just too "nuanced" for you all. LOL!

I am not disputing that Brokaw was what could possibly even be characterized as "sympathetic" to the President on this issue. I'm just pointing out the choice of words that he (Brokaw) says he would have used.

< if tombrokaw knew it was an attack after the first plane, then he's got some 'splaining to >

Don't know about Tom but Kerry knew. Read this and tell me if this doesn't sound like bragging. Kinda like a "nanner, nanner momment" for Kerry.

KERRY to Larry King: I knew instantaneously with the first. I'm a pilot, and I looked at
the weather, and it's what we call in pilot lingo CAVU, ceiling and
visibility unlimited. And I knew that that plane did not fly into that
building accidentally, as people were speculating. It just doesn't happen,
could not, under those circumstances. So I knew it was deliberate, whether
it was suicide, whether it was something -- I couldn't tell. When the second
plane hit, it was obvious to the world.

I'm sure not saying I think you're wrong, I just heard it a bit differently. My experience with Brokaw on the Imus program is that he knows Imus likes to disarm and that he, Brokaw, is very careful when he occasionally comes on as a guest.

What Bush should have done was instructed his staff via Card to gather all the info they could ASAP ... oh, that's what he did do? Well, never mind then. Just another non issue in the minds of libs only.

Brokaw just now decides this is the most embarrassing issue of all time, when it has been known for three years. And it just happens to be the main Kerry talking point at this particular second. He should be getting salary checks from the DNC.

Awright....who exactly knows what those cryptic words whispered to Bush were?

Were they "Mr. President, we have an 'alpha (pick your codeword)' situation"?

Were they "Mr. President, it's hit the fan?"

Was it "Mr. President, the airline lost your luggage?"

Were they "Sit tight, Mr. President, we're pulling out under emergency protocols?"

The Monday morning quarterbacks need to be slapped hard because, simply, they don't know anything relevant to what the proper response should have been.

Apparently, to the ever-so-wise talking heads (and Ketchup boy), Bush should have jumped up, struck a dramatic pose, thumped his chest, and shouted "I'll protect you, America!" and run out into the parking lot...

...where the motorcade would have been unprepared, where the highways would have not yet been cleared, to stumble out into morning traffic to try to get to the airport to get back on to Air Force One, all the time putting the POTUS into what could have been the line-of-fire of these co-ordinated attacks.

Thanks, Brokaw. Thanks for shooting from the hip. Thanks for letting Michael Moore write your script. Thanks a bunch, Bwokaw.

Focusing on whether the al Qaida attacks on NY should have been handled quicker by the President/whomever is what John Kerry wants.

This is John Kerry's idea of Leadership? Good Lord.

Kennedy's seven minutes: After surfacing, he immediately began to formulate the plan that would result in his going back (with the help of Markham and Gargan, his two henchmen who rowed him over -- I do not recall any salt water laden clothing ever being made available to back up his story of a night time swim)to the bigger island and his motel room. Then after 2:00 AM, he went to the motel desk clerk to ask the time. He said that he was asleep, had been awakened by some noise and couldn't find his watch. He was attempting to establish an alibi that he had returned to the bigger island (before Mary Jo went into the water), and, actually, had left Markham and Gargan and Mary Jo at the ferry dock. He would have said that he impulsively dove into the water and swam back because he could not remain at the party all night. The henchmen would have taken the "fall" for Mary Jo's death. What actually happened is that the henchmen rowed him over (so, they knew he had safely made it there and did not have to "check" on him). When the alibi started falling apart (he was on the phone all morning with advisors who did not think the alibi would work, as there were too many people - 12 - at the party to ensure the alibi would stick), he then developed the canard that after looking for Mary Jo with the henchmen (who he had gone back to the party to get), he impulsively jumped into the water and swam back --after all, now he had to explain why he was in his motel talking to the clerk, etc. He was, and remains, the ultimate liberal politician whose credo is protect your political viability at all cost.

Ain't hindsight a wonderful thing tho. And for those like Broke-aw, the biggest benefit of all is that you can never be proven wrong! All you have to do is make a statement agrandizing yourself...and everything is wonderful!

I know for sure what I'd have done in the exact same circumstances; but I'm very sure I wouldn't want it to be made public!

Besides: the men's room was way too far away from that classroom...and I hate kids laughing at me!

Well, Mr. Broke-aw. . . now that you've chosen to be our own, official, American, unbiased, Monday morning quarterback; could you answer what you'd have done/said in these situations (in as few words as possible):

1. As a fireman standing beneath the North Tower of the WTC just after the plane hit?

2. As the captain on the Titanic after being told your ship had just struck an iceberg?

3. As Jesus, after being told, "them durn Roman guards are a'comin' for ya!"?

4. As President, after being told that the Pearl Harbor Naval Base had just been attacked by the Japanese with great loss of life?

5. As Sudam Hussein in that little hole in the ground, just after you saw the US soldier with a rifle pointed at your head?

And.....

6. As Mrs. Broke-aw (your mom, stupid), after being told she'd given birth to a "talking head"?

Pray tell, Mr. Broke-aw, what indeed would you have done/said in these situations, HHhhhhmmmmmmmMMMMMM?????
