HUMAN EVENTS EXCLUSIVE: Vietnam Vets Organization Blasts Kerry in New TV Ad
Human Events Online ^ | August 4, 2004 | Human Events

Posted on 08/04/2004 3:32:47 PM PDT by hinterlander

HUMAN EVENTS has obtained a copy of a scorching new television advertisement addressing Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's record in Vietnam that has been produced by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth.

The group is a non-partisan "527" organization whose membership is limited to former military officers and enlisted men who served in Vietnam on Navy Swift Boats or affiliated commands.

The group says, "Senator Kerry misrepresented his own actions and those of his fellow officers and men."

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is chaired by Rear Admiral Roy Hoffman, USN (ret), and includes on its steering committee John O'Neill, the naval officer who took over John Kerry's Swift Boat in Vietnam and who is the author Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, an upcoming book from Regnery, a sister company of Human Events.

In Unfit, O'Neill reports that what he learned convinced him -- and the majority of veterans who served directly with Kerry -- that "John Kerry was and is unfit for command as a Naval officer, let alone as commander in chief of the Untied States."

The ad is too general to be effective. It has no specifics. It is counterproductive and would backfire if given wide play as shown. That is my opinion.

Yes. It's very powerful. I don't get moved very much by politically related statements. I didn't exactly feel like doing any high fives. The ad was clean, unadulterated sincerity. I felt what they were saying, and it surprised me to hear that depth in what they were saying. They are men, the kind of men who make America great. FReegards....

I suspected that would be your opinion but you are wrong. The ad is not an isolated incident. There is an entire book describing the deatils and men who are willing to be interviewd about same. The ad is the the attention getter, the blow to Kerry is the willingness of the men to testify to their version of the events which is strikingly ddifferent than kerry's. Stay tuned.

WHOA!

What an AD!

Haven't seen a better or more credible ad that puts John boy in his place. The people that SERVED with him SPEAK OUT. Beautiful ad. Could NOT be MORE EFFECTIVE.

John Ziegler. He was here in Louisville until he self-destructed. The local Gannett affiliate bragged about how they ran him out of town...

I emailed into his show numerous times. I'm glad to see he's employed again.

..... Kerry will never ever be able to lead our military. What I don't understand is how Kerry and that wife of his made it this far?? How can this be?

The only thing I can think of is that the DemocRATS have NOBODY capable/fit for the highest office in the land. Can you imagine? Kerry is the BEST they can offer? Well, Lieberman was the best candidate they had, imho. But he was NOT Liberal enough for the FAR LEFT wing that has hijacked the DemocRAT Party. They would never have him run.

I look for Kerry to get TROUNCED November 2nd !!

Lost Wallet

A guy was traveling through Mexico on vacation when, lo and behold, he lost his wallet and all identification.

Cutting his trip short, he attempts to make his way home but is stopped by the Customs Agent at the border.

"May I see your identification, please?" asks the agent.

"I'm sorry, but I lost my wallet," replies the guy.

"Sure, buddy, I hear that every day. No ID, no crossing the border," says the agent.

"But I can prove that I'm an American!" he exclaims. "I have a picture of Ronald Reagan tattooed on one butt cheek and a picture of George Bush on the other."

"This I gotta see," replies the agent. With that, Joe drops his pants and bends over in front of the agent. ! "By golly, you're right!" exclaims the agent. "Go on home to Boston."

"Thanks!" he says. "But how did you know I was from Boston?"

The agent replies, "I recognized the picture of John Kerry in the middle."

I think (and hope) this ad is just a teaser. Two or three follow up ads one more of the specific incidents would add more credibility. I think the attempt in this ad was to show how many vets that served alongside Kerry are claiming he's unfit to be Commander in Chief.

John Ziegler. He was here in Louisville until he self-destructed.

Ziegler has detailed his colorful string of "hirings and firings".

He's done well in Los Angeles. As he said, the management of KFI took a risk
at putting him on doing a semi-colorful three-hour "news of the day"
show...thus causing them to cut three hours of the George Noury (sp?)
show (the successor to Art Bell's M-F show).
Ziegler said that Art Bell even made some snide comments about this change
in programming at KFI.

HOWEVER, Ziegler announced last week (or so) that the latest ratings book shows him
doing very well. (I can't rememeber if he's now #1 rated in his slot or
just that he'd improved greatly over his tenure.)

He's also had the luck to have a lady news announcer/side-kick with
a straight-shooting approach from the female side of the gender divide.
She's been perceptive and leaps ahead of some of the expert talking heads
in some of the Kobe case development.
(Not that I care a lot about the Kobe case, but the lady has been entertaining
in her commentaries.)

That ad reminds me of the sort of charges against which I recently spent some time defending Bush Sr. on a mostly "Left board (THE WELL, where I've hung out since '94).

Some of these people hated the Bushes so much that they really wanted to believe that Bush Sr. was a coward and a liar – that he had panicked and bailed out early, and left his crew to burn alive.

They trotted out the same sort of evidence: statements by individuals in other aircraft, the fact the Bush was reassigned soon afterwords, paperwork that was supposed to say something different than it said, comments from people up the chain of command, comments likely taken out of context and the like.

I pointed out some reasons to treat such claims with considerable skepticism: that some were likely politically motivated and the others were likely motivated by envy, that former crewmembers stated that they were ready to fly with Bush again, that in the best of circumstances after-action reports are often confused and contain multiple and mutually contradictory versions of events, that in combat situations paperwork is often incomplete or misleading, and the like. That ultimately few men are consistently either heroes or cowards, that combat - especially combat from vehicles, ships or aircraft - inherently involves only a limited understanding of what others around you are doing, and that generally I'd be very skeptical of such charges against anyone who had seem combat without the sorts of very specific evidence that's unlikely to be present in such circumstances.

I don't know if I convinced anyone on THE WELL.

But many of the the claims in that ad (and at the Swift site), at this point, seem to me to be of a pretty similar nature.

That's good news. I just hope it gets out. And I hope the WH doesn't listen to McCain. He wants the WH to condemn the ad.

generally I'd be very skeptical of such charges against anyone who had seem combat without the sorts of very specific evidence that's unlikely to be present in such circumstances.

That's all true. But the Kerry case seems to be an exception. I'll wait for the book, but I just heard a caller to the Sean Hannity show say he was from a tv station, and the packet of facts backing up the commercial convinced him that they would have no liability for showing the ad.

Kerry's team is also using "Dem parsing" to defend him. The defenses say things like "these men didn't serve on his boat". Well, no, they don't claim to. Some of them were commanding officers in boats on the same mission. One was his commanding officer.
There's also the fact that of the 23 living swift boat commanders from his unit, only 1 supports him.

This isn't a "dirty trick". Kerry has plenty of time to answer the charges, and the Swift Boat group has time to counter.

How could Kerry expect the real truth not to be told after he used his own war record so much?

Actually, the surprising thing is that it is getting publicity. Normally, dems can count on the media to spike stories like this. Bush is too hung up on 'new tone' stuff. It took an independent group buying media time to bring it to public light.

And I suspect it will get a lot less play than, say, a Michael Moore ad would.
