Quick Question: What is a .50 cal BMG rifle?

Posted on 07/30/2004 8:17:31 AM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I am filling out a survey about gun ownership and have been asked about a .50 cal BMG rifle.

Could you please explain to me what this is and what it's used for?

Thank you

Declaration of Independece:

"are endowed by their creator by inaliable rights"

Meaning that free people are BORN with rights, natural rights not given by government, but are a birthright from God (nature, creator)

What the Bill of Rights does is also write down certain of these rights that come from being born a free human.

The second amendment says that the security of a free state is dependent upon the right of a person to own and carry arms, it was understood that this right of arms is one that someone is born with, not a right granted by government, and that this right the free states are dependent upon for their very security, that a free state can call upon its free citizens to muster as an armed militia. A militia is not paid, and does not have government issued weapons. The National Guard is not a militia.

OUR BIRTHRIGHT AS A FREE PEOPLE COMES FROM A HIGHER POWER THAN GOVERNMENT, AND OUR GOVERNMENT DOES NOT GRANT US RIGHTS, THEY ARE OURS.

The phrase "under God" in the pledge of allegiance is a reference also to this legal concept of our nation being under the "natural law" where people possess rights and those rights are not grants from government to be seized at will. When governments seek to sieze natural rights from free people, they tyrannical and should be opposed by free people, this was the belief of the founders of this nation.

Realize that the attempt to take out "under God" is an attack upon the legal framework that rights are not granted by government. What the ulimate aim of these rights confiscators is, 1. eliminate natural rights 2. proclaim rights come from government grants 3. take away those government granted rights.

Fight with all you have to take on the movement to ruin our pledge, our rights. We are ultimately fighting for our birthright as a free people.

I asked someone in the Bush/Cheney office what this BMG gun was and they told me that it was an anti-air gun to take down planes

Sheesh! never ask any political anybody or group about firearms to start with.

A BMG 50 is a .50 caliber Browning Machine(full auto) Gun, this means that it will continue to fire rounds until it has expended the supply of rounds in the gun.

To legally own a Machine gun one must have a Class III FFL.

There are other versions of this firearm that are not full auto but semi-auto and single shot. Most are used for competition and just general "fun" shooting when you can afford the ammo.

IMO this is the perfect homeland Militia heavy weapon.

That survey needs to be researched to find it's origin, You'll probably find it is linked to the anti-gun movement.

glock You have anything to add to this?

They seem legit pro-gun. But why ANYONE would tell ANY survey what guns they own is beyond me. Hopefully, the survey is about his views on the issues, and not his inventory.

"Fifty-caliber Browning Machine Gun" is the ammo.

a .50BMG is any rifle that fires this round. They are big, heavy, expensive, and accurate to a great range. Great sniper rifles, and great for extreme-range sports shooting.

And hunting bunnies.

You know, people get touchy about guns around here.

Don't go wobbly on us, HLL!

The important thing to realize about .50's is that they are just the largest generally available gun out there right now. If they are banned, then there will be another calibre that becomes the largest, and the anti-gunners will start taking out after that.

It may be that slippery slope arguments are often silly, but I think they are entirely appropriate in this case. Government has an inherent interest in limiting private ownership of weaponry. There is really no lower limit to the size and type of weapon the government would have an interest in limiting private owership of.

That is why the "Second Amendment Absolutist" position makes sense to me...

BTW, the best general gun forum, imho, is www.thehighroad.org

It took over where thefiringline.com left off

Was that really addressed at me?

I basically agree, and nothing in my post contradicts it. If it is the government that determines it, it is not by right but by permission. Rights are not endowed by government, but should be protected by it.

Semi-auto. Watched the movie -- very cool.

I'm jealous.

Never take for granted that people know about "popular usage"

Free Republic postings here show up on Google, so anyone who does not know, but earnestly wants to learn, could easily end up at this very forum seeking information.

Because of that, I believe clarity is needed when describing the difference between the actual machinegun often called Ma Duece by soldiers, and the cartridge itself.

Several here have it right, the business about .50 BMG is to ban/confiscate rifles that have never been used in crime, just to advance a gun confiscation agenda that will be expanded one victory, one sliver of the shooting sports community at a time.

Granted Randy's son shot first but as far as the report reads, the Feds came in UNIDENTIFIED. I probably would have shot as well seeing armed men running towards me through the woods.

Not true. Randy Weaver's friend (can't recall his name) was with Randy's son and dog investigating why the dog was barking. The agent was in full camo in a fixed position on the ground. As the dog, out front, approached the agent's position of concealment the agent shot it. Randy's son returned fire in the direction that the shot came from hitting the agent and was fired on and hit in return.

The family friend didn't see the agent and the Weaver boy probably didn't see him either. At least not clearly. The friend carried the boy back to the house which was then put under seige. It was sometime later that Horiuchi took his famous shot. He was shooting at the friend who was running from an outbuilding where the boy's body lay while Sandy Weaver held the door open. He hit Sandy and her baby that she was holding in her arms.

That was the account I read in The American Hunter, an NRA publication, FWIW.

I support the second ammendment, but before I can answer if the .50 cal BMG is a fine private citizen gun, I think that it's important to know it's practical usage.

For your information, the intention of the founding fathers when framing the Second Amendment was that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" referred specifically to military firearms. They had just gone through an armed revolution, remember?

Additionally, the Supreme Court ruled that the right to own a sawed-off shotgun could be infringed precisely because, according to the government, a sawed-off shotgun had no military use.

I am not going wobbly. I just finished and mailed in my survery. I am pretty sure I will secure the endorsement considering my opponent has voted against the 2nd Ammendment 100% of the time.

Here is a picture of my then 16 year old son holding a .50BMG round for a size reference.

People here are very defensive when the terms "gun" and "practical" are used together. Many people have many things that are not practical, like private jets. However, if they can afford them great!.

Target shooting these weapons is like riding bulls. People do it, but it ain't for everybody. If you do like it then it is like nothing else. Personally I prefer a smaller caliber in full-auto, but I still like shooting El Roy's Barrett.

"was that addressed "at" me"??/

At implies a counterpoint, opposition.

"to me" might well imply just singing along with you, or amplyfing the points you brought up.

I was under the belief that we could agree, and expand upon our agreement for the edification of others and our own enjoyment of this site. Am I wrong in that?

"To legally own a Machine gun one must have a Class III FFL"

You can buy machineguns from a class 3 FFL but you don't have to be a FFL to own a machinegun. Paperwork and a $200.00 transfer tax is all it takes in most states.
