Quick Question: What is a .50 cal BMG rifle?

Posted on 07/30/2004 8:17:31 AM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I am filling out a survey about gun ownership and have been asked about a .50 cal BMG rifle.

Could you please explain to me what this is and what it's used for?

Thank you

I agree 110%. I teach firearms/NRA courses on the weekends and NOTHING makes my day better than taking a NOVICE shooter and introducing them to the world of guns and making a BELIEVER out of them! It's AWESOME to see a convert realize just how damn fun they are plus the benefit of self-defense thrown in.

Yes, 100 caliber means about a 1 inch projectile.

Actually, 20mm - and it's not a rifle, it's a grenade launcher.

Well, ever since the Elian fiasco I say "more firepower to the people."

Anyone who thinks we aren't having trouble with jack booted thugs in this country is deluding themselves. And, the only way to counter such people is with serious firepower.

All that aside, who cares about practical useage? If practical useage is a criteria for purchase of anything, then why are people allowed to purchase state of the art TV, surround sound, in home theater, ice maker in the door refrigerators and SUV's?

Under the Second Amendment, there is no such thing as a firearm that is not a "fine private citizen gun." Look up "infringe" for starters.

It's just that most government officials don't realize this.

I think that it's important to know it's practical usage.

Well, I would suggest most guns aren't practical. Your free speech rights don't depend on you using it only for practical things.

It is the biggest of the 'normal' bullets out there, so it is under attack. As soon as they make it illegal and establish that some bullets are 'too big' as a precedent they will gradually declare all rounds 'too big'.

It is being used by the left to drive a wedge between people who think the second amendment was about hunting and those who recognize that an armed populace is the ultimate check on tyranny.

I could accept an honest debate about whether or not guns are necessary to protect our other rights. That debate would be about a Constitutional amendment overturning the second. I cannot accept limiting our rights outside of the process the Constitution defined.

I support the second amendment, but before I can answer if the .50 cal BMG is a fine private citizen gun, I think that it's important to know it's practical usage.

IMO the two statements

1. I support the second amendment

and

2. Before I can answer if the 50 cal BMG ( a firearm chambered for the 50 BMG cartridge is what you mean) is fine for a private citizen, I think it's important to know it's practical usage...

are incompatible

Self Defense, Target Shooting, or just the fun of collecting something paid for with your own or money given to you legally earned is all that matters for ownership of any weapon under the 2nd amendment...any firearm chambered for the BMG cartridge is covered under the 2nd amendment

IMO

The Second Amendment is about hunting like the 1st Amendment is about greeting cards.

I agree. Just think back to Ruby Ridge and the FBI sniper Horichuri blasting Randy Weaver's wife and infant over a WEAPONS CHARGE! Granted Randy's son shot first but as far as the report reads, the Feds came in UNIDENTIFIED. I probably would have shot as well seeing armed men running towards me through the woods. Of course, the Janet "From another Planet" Reno Admin did NOTHING to Horichuri.

"This is a weapon...that uses a cartridge the size of a ketchup bottle." --Bob Williamson of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence

The gun "can shoot down airplanes." --Rep. Henry Waxman

The bullet from this gun "can pierce tanks and concrete bunkers." --U.S. Rep. Rod Blagojevich

The projectile from the .50 caliber rifle is "capable of piercing light armor at 4 miles." --Senator Dianne Feinstein

"The weapon can penetrate several inches of steel." --Senator Dianne Feinstein

I use it in the ASAT role myself. You have to lead those communications satellites quite a bit though.

Michigan Coalition for Responisble Gun Owners

I see these words as two huge red flags in the organization's name. Do you know anything about them?

I support the second ammendment, but before I can answer if the .50 cal BMG is a fine private citizen gun, I think that it's important to know it's practical usage.

First, define "practical" - not for me or anyone here, but for yourself.

Second, read up some more on the 2nd Amendment, what it means, and why it's important. The Federalist Papers are a good start.

Then, define "practical".

Good grief, you're beginning to sound like John Kerry.

I would allow the AWB to Sunset.

I believe that the 2nd Ammendment conveys a collective right to states, giving them the right to keep and bear arms for a well regulated militia.

I would oppose any effort to continue or expand the AWB

I believe the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right.

I so not support the victims of gun violence to file suit against gun manufacturers.

I believe that every person has the right to keep and bear arms in the defence of himself and the state.

I asked someone in the Bush/Cheney office what this BMG gun was and they told me that it was an anti-air gun to take down planes so I came to FR to ask exactly what it was and you call me John Kerry.

Thanks

That actually is not true, at Ruby Ridge government hit men shot the family dog and refused to identify themselves when verbally challenged after killing the animal. They wore no garments that identified them as law enforcement, so the son shot back.

I cannot say I would do any differently if someone came onto my property, kills my dog and does not answer my verbal hail.

Actually, 20mm - and it's not a rifle, it's a grenade launcher.

A grenade launcher would be 40mm.
