Democrats divided on assault gun ban
The Times-Picayune ^ | July 26, 2004 | Bruce Alpert

BOSTON Democrats begin their national convention today united on many issues, but divided on how much to make of the Bush administration's refusal to push for an extension of the 10-year-old ban on assault weapons.

The ban expires at midnight on Sept. 13, and Claire Buchan, a Bush spokeswoman, said he would sign an extension if Congress sends him one. But House GOP leaders said they won't schedule a vote unless Bush specifically asks. And they said that he hasn't done so.

Sarah Brady of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said polls continue to show that three-quarters of Democrats and two-thirds of Republicans support an extension of a ban on weapons, and "expect the president" to carry out his 2000 campaign pledge.

"We are running out of time to prevent a ridiculous and lethal flood of deadly weapons from being available to every dangerous and disturbed soul in America," Brady said.

Rep. William Jefferson D-La., said extending the ban on 19 assault weapons is the right thing to do because "they aren't used for hunting, or self-protection, only to kill people."

Nevertheless, he disagrees with Brady on whether to make it a big presidential campaign issue, but acknowledged that many other Democrats share Brady's view.

I'm sure King George said something very similar just before sending his Redcoats to Boston Common...

But don't they ALL have to drink the kool-aid? I think the Dems should put on a united front on this one and demand even stricter gun laws and make it a central plank for the party! :^)

"out of time to prevent a ridiculous and lethal flood of deadly weapons from being available"

The only thing ridiculous here is this stupid remark. These people are so desperate to get the public in a panic they just make this stuff up as they go along.

These kind of statements are so off the wall, that Democrats can't even take them seriously. The Dem leadership knows that the AWB cost them control of the US House of Representatives several years ago and that it cost them the Presidency in the last election. While they would like to do extend the ban, and if every regain power are likely to impose such a law, I don't see them being so stupid at to try it this year. They are tired of being out of power and will lie to the public in hopes that the public does not remember what the Dem's really stand for.

When are intelligent people going to start ignoring this shrillish shrew and her phoney statistics and insane logic?

Why doesn't she campaign against high cholesterol food causing deaths, or fast cars? Or are they next on her hit list?

Here, poodle, poodle. Nice doggie.

See my "assault" weapon? Don't try to pick it up and carry it away. Nooooo! Bad poodle. Bad, bad poodle.

Now go back to your doghouse. I think Teerayzaa is calling and wants you to jump through hoops and sign pre-nuptial agreements.

I think Bush should support the ban, if and only IF, someone could show him evidence that it did anyhting to reduce crime. That will never happen, so he should just stay where he is.

Everyone knows that the "widespread support for the AW ban extension" it total crap. The people who are pushing for the extension wouldn't vote for Bush no matter what he did and the people who want it to expire will sit on their hands on election day if Bush does.

He has absolutely nothing to lose by allowing it to expire and the presidency to lose by signing or allowing an extension. This isn't to say that right after the election they won't bring it back up and THEN pass it. The freedom hating, government loving socialists won't give up until they are dead.

WHAT TOTAL BS!!

The EXACT same kind of semiautomatic firearms are being sold right now, sans things like flash hiders and bayonet lugs! We are only talking about cosmetic differences here!

No problem. All those people are in Boston right now.

But what about after the Dem Convention? From what I've seen, Kerry only wants to proclaim what a great white hunter he is. Check this story by Mark Steyn in which Lurch says he low-crawls on his belly when hunting white tails with a double barrel 12 guage here.

The bent one couldn't refrain from mentioning the impending expiration of the AWB last night at the convention. I believe the Brady crew, Schumer et al. will be unable to stifle themselves. This is no time to be complacent.

Voting trends are not reliable after September 11, 2001. After the liberation of Iraq, who knows? The pubbies scored an upset in 2002. The pubbies took control of Congress in 1994, an off year election with low turn-out as the White House was not at stake.

If you can't persuade someone to vote for Bush or against Kerry, persuade them to stay home if possible.

From time to time, I’ll post or ping on noteworthy articles about politics, foreign and military affairs. Let me know if you want off my list.

This is a problem? Does the Constitution say guns shouldn't be capable of killing people?

Jefferson is the congressman for the city of New Orleans. He's essentially the Lord of Orleans. He runs the political machine that appoints who shall run the cty.

The city is 70% black, 40% unemployable, and mostly illiterate to boot. Crime is pandemic with no sgn of abatement.

He has every reason to focus ther failure to clean up the city on an evil boogeyman.

I sure hope that you were being sarcastic, because:

a) There are lies, damned lies and statistics. The easiest thing to do is to distort reality using some kind of tainted statistical analysis. The Dems do it all the time, ESPECIALLY when it comes to guns.

b) I couldn't care less if crime declined with the AWB and rose after it expired. The concept of "rights" for the vast majority of (law-abiding) citizens is utterly independent of the criminal actions of a few morally and/or mentally deficient people. The most vital right is the right to defend one's self, family, freedom and country. Any law that infringes upon such a right is completely illegitimate.
