Archive monitors assigned to watch Sandy Berger review top-secret documents allowed the former national security adviser to break the rules and be left alone, the New York Daily News reported.
Berger, the target of a federal investigation for allegedly smuggling secret files out of the National Archives, persuaded the monitors to leave him alone in the high-security room by saying he had to make sensitive phone calls, a senior law enforcement source told the paper.
"He was supposed to be monitored at all times but kept asking the monitor to leave so he could make private calls," the official said.
The sources said Berger stepped out of the room as he looked over the documents and allegedly stashed some in his clothing.
The archive monitors told the FBI Berger was observed stuffing his socks with handwritten notes about files that were to be given to the 9-11 Commission.
Notes about the secret files cannot be taken out without special permission.
The monitors also observed frequent bathroom breaks that aroused their suspicion.
The New York paper noted it is standard procedure to constantly monitor anyone with a security clearance who examines the type of code-word classified files stored in the underground archives vault.
Berger's attorney, Lanny Breuer denies the allegation that Berger hid papers in his socks.
This whole incident, including the leak, has Bill and Hillary writen all over it.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but it might be interesting if the investigators requested a subpoena for his cell phone records and correlated the calls with the visits and the times he requested privacy.
Good point.
Sure does.
You'd barely know about it if left to the so-called "not liberal" media.
This story has been given the order from above to be buried. Only Republican scandals may be reported on.
Big stories like the "AWOL" scandal redux. Isn't that amazing btw? Nothing new happened in the last four years since the last election to make it relevent other than the DNC wanted to talk about it again and the media MADE it a story. Sort of how Michael Moore's throughly debunked factless movie got all that free publicity by a willing media.
But something bad about former Kerry advisor Berger that could embarass? Sandy who? Parody him? Why, that would be mean, why would we do that?
Makes me sick.
I hate to state the obvious, but those 'monitors' are a bunch of faggots.
A STING! for G-ds sakes, how about 'No, sir' when asked to leave. If they had just done their jobs and not been thrown off by Burger's orders, (NOT their superior) none of this would have happenned.
'Oooh, he told us to leave, so we, being the sissy willed public employees we are, covered our eyes and ears and sang 'la la la la la' so we wouldn't hear him steal documents'
Are Americans such idiots to accept this? Was there a gun? A physical threat? This had to take a YEAR TO COME OUT. What a joke.
Break the rules? A Democrat? The Toricelli Rule........
Great idea
You are so RIGHT. This country is nearly FINISHED, and I mean it, when the mainstream media is this evil and biased, and the American people are so ignorant, for the most part.
The thing that I can't figure is why did the NA people just roll over for this guy. Did he intimidate them in some way? Were they ordered by a superior to let him do whatever he wanted? Did Berger think he had the all clear, and from whom?
I doubt that it was their idea alone to permit him to do this. People in those jobs know that the person at the bottom of the totem pole is the one most likely to get fired first, so I don't think they would have taken it upon themselves to violate the rules so blatantly.
I suspect they were told by some superior to let Berger do this; and that that superior had been told by someone else to give Sandy free rein. Since the first person the archivist called after the theft was detected was Bill Clinton's lawyer, I think we know where this all goes. Even though the lawyer was the NA's liaison with Bill, there was no reason for Clinton to even be involved in this - they weren't Clinton's private papers - but he obviously was.
And people wonder why I plan to leave. I predict no demon rat will ever face the music for any of the crimes they have committed. As far as I know, they still can't even figure out who hired Craig Livingstone. And, no one fell on his sword over FBI Filegate either. It kind of sucks, but no demon rat will ever get justice.
They're all crooks, and the Founding Fathers died for nothing.

That was a clever ruse. I think it's time to let go of some security people.
BINGO! I don't think Bergler would think of using that telephone excuse himself. Most likely Bill told him something like, "Hey, just say you have to make some sensitive phone calls. They'll trust you since you were head of the NSC. And you won't really be stealing documents since they were ours to begin with. Just borrow them and conveniently lose a few. And don't sweat it. They'll never find out."
The problem was that Bergler isn't nearly as slick as Clinton. He probably had guilty sweat pouring off his body which aroused suspicions. Bill could have done it without breaking a sweat but not Sandy.
Thus spaketh Mr. Upbeat.
The upside to all this is that ALL Clinton administration folks in the future, including Bill himself, will be watched VERY CLOSELY whenever they go into the National Archive documents. Matter of fact, I suggest they set up monitoring video cameras for whenever the Clinton folks go into those docs. Oh, and check their socks on the way out.
