LAS VEGAS - One of the partners buying the Aladdin hotel-casino said singer Linda Ronstadt (news) would be welcomed back to the property after the performer was kicked out over the weekend by current management for praising filmmaker Michael Moore.
Planet Hollywood CEO Robert Earl of Orlando, Fla., said he'd like to take Moore up on the filmmaker's offer to join Ronstadt on Aladdin's stage and sing "America the Beautiful" when Earl's management team takes control of the bankrupt casino, as early as September.
"We respect artists' creativity and support their rights to express themselves," Earl said in a statement Wednesday. "We were very sorry to hear about the unfortunate circumstances of this past Saturday night and want to make it clear that Planet Hollywood has never, in our 13 year history, restricted any artists' right to free speech and we will continue with that policy once we take ownership."
Current Aladdin President Bill Timmins, who is British, had Ronstadt escorted off the property after her concert because she called Moore a "great American patriot" during a prelude to her encore.
Ronstadt encouraged the audience of 4,500 people to see Fahrenheit 9/11, Moore's unflattering documentary about President Bush (news - web sites). She said Moore was "spreading the truth."
Timmins, who was in the audience, said Ronstadt's comments irked people and some tore down posters and walked out of the theater angrily.
Timmins said Ronstadt would never be allowed to play at the Arabian Nights-themed resort while he was in charge.
Ronstadt told The Los Angeles Times she'd continue to laud Moore and didn't want to play the Aladdin again anyway.
Earl's partnership includes Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Bay Harbour Management of New York, which plan to take over the resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
Earl and his investors bought the property last August after a bankruptcy court approved the deal. The group needs a gambling license from the Nevada Gaming Commission before the transaction is completed.
Earl hopes for a license hearing next month. If the license is granted, the Aladdin will be renamed Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
"We respect artists' creativity and support their rights to express themselves," Earl said in a statement Wednesday.
So do I. I also respect my own right to yell "shut up and sing you stupid fat cow has-been" during her diatribe against Bush.
Is there some kind of stupid virus going around among entertainment executives on the left. Does someone really need to explain to executives who are in the business of entertaining people that you don't gratuitously piss off half of your audience and expect to stay in business?
If that's true, Freepers will never set foot in the Aladdin under its new management.
"It's a real conflict for me when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian. It can cloud my enjoyment. I'd rather not know."
- Linda Ronstadt
Then why spout your LIBERAL points of view at your own concerts! What a bigot she is!
Some of them don't get it yet. When they start losing money, they'll understand the message.
Bingo. This one has "boycott" written all over it. And there's plenty of other places.
LOL, shhhhh! If we don't explain it, they'll sink like lead balloons even faster.
Prairie
Maybe having an Arabian Nights program while your country is waiting for the next attack from that quarter isn't exactly the best idea. Perhaps quality business decisions like this are related to why they're bankrupt.
I imagine a lot of people are cancelling their reservations even as we speak.
Hay! It's Earl the Pearl's dough. Once he's licensed and in control, he can try and turn around a "loser" property. He won't get a dime from my Family and maybe 50 million others, but it's his choice. Go for it schmuck!
I will definitely not be going to this joint again if this happens.
Tragedy, it was a nice place to stroll the shops and eat the buffet but oh well.
Well, scratch the Aladdin hotel off the list of places to stay when visiting Las Vegas.
The more insanity I see from the left wackos the more I'm convinced they run the MEGA business establishments here in our country! This is SCARY STUFF!
I thank Planet Hollywood CEO Robert Earl of Orlando, Fla. for the heads-up, he's stupider than Ronstadt. LOL!
"Planet Hollywood CEO Robert Earl of Orlando, Fla., said he'd like to take Moore up on the filmmaker's offer to join Ronstadt on Aladdin's stage and sing "America the Beautiful" when Earl's management team takes control of the bankrupt casino, as early as September."
I doubt that Moore even knows the words to "America the Beautiful." Even if he did, he would probably choke on the words - at least he should!
Wonderful!
After telling my sister to make sure that she books all her and her hubby's accomodations during their trips to Vegas at the Alladin, I can now suggest that they stay elsewhere.
They are older, retired, and have many friends who make frequent trips to Vegas throughout the year. And they will be more than happy to pass the word along.
I'm sure her manager and publicist are just doing back flips about now.
Awful lot of business folks going out of their way to alienate their customers. I wonder if they're teaching that in business schools these days--"How to Lose it All 101". They could bring in guest speakers like the Dixie Twits, Whoopsie Goldberg, Alec Baldwin--heck, the entire course could be taught by entertainment industry guest speakers.
