OK Freepers --
I just got a call from a friend of mine who went to see Farenheit 911 today.
She is a lawyer, but by no means a committed Democrat. She found the movie very compelling and said it has convinced her to vote for Kerry. She is very smart, but like most Americans doesn't follow politics very closely.
I need an article that is very credible, not overly partisan, and extremely well sourced and reasoned. I have seen this one, but wonder if there is anything better.
I know that there have been a lot of articles debunking the "facts" presented in this film, but I am looking for the absolute best and most comprehensive one, in the hope that she will be persuaded to change her mind.
Changing her mind will not have any impact on the election, since since we live in Massachusetts which will go for Kerry no matter how -- or even whether -- we vote. But I don't feel like listening to her telling me that Michael Moore is right for the next few months.
She is open to a reasonable argument, if I can find the right article.
Your help, as always, will be gratefully appreciated.
Isikoff's refutation in Newsweek--about 2 weeks ago.
Buy her a copy of "Michael Moore is a Big Fat Stupid White Man".
Seriously. I just finished it and she'll see what he's all about.
Here's an article that is really good:
Hitchens:

Newsweek:

Cohen:

Koch:

Stephy also proved him to be lying at the end of their interview on This Week two weeks ago and from what I can gather, Kurtz ground him to pieces on Reliable Sources yesterday. You may need to get transcripts for those. Once she's let all that sink in, hit her with the stuff from the right. All that's left at that point is to ask her if both sides are in agreement that the film is garbage, how can she give it creedence in her decision making process in who to vote for?

Here's a link for an Isikoff piece on MM:

Also, Christopher Hitchens had one in Slate on line.
" Mr. Bush worked the line, shook Mr. Faulkners hand and then proceeded until Linda Prince spoke up. This girl lost her mother on 9/11, Prince told the president. With that proclamation the president changed from the leader of the free world to a father and a husband. According to Mr. Faulkner, The presidents entire expression transformed and he turned and came back against the flow and his eyes locked on Ashleys. The president took the time to talk to Mr. Faulkners daughter Ashley and give her a warm hug. "The Washington Dispatch
Can you look at that picture and still believe that Bush knew about 9/11 beforehand, or helped the terrorists escape?
I definately prefer the Hitchens article from slate. If someone not interested in politics can make it through the slate article, I would then recommend they read ten pages of 56 deceits. Maybe then they can get through it without glazing over.
"She is a lawyer, but by no means a committed Democrat."
I am a lawyer - law degree anyway - never been a democrat.
She found the movie very compelling and said it has convinced her to vote for Kerry. She is very smart..."
Um...no...she's not. By every standard I've heard of or know of, the movie is so transparently biased, it's parody.
She's a lawyer, she's a dem ( committed or other wise), and she believes Michael Moore...Why would you nother? There is nothing that you can say to her that she will accept as accurate...some folks aren't worth the effort
Let's get this straight...
Your friend is a lawyer, smart and compelled to vote for Kerry on the basis of Dinty Moore's movie.
Well, um, what lawyer accepts a fact from a party on the face of the proponent's assertion?
What lawyer doesn't do background work to anticipate the opposition's arguments?
What lawyer doesn't try to ascertain all the facts in relation to the law?
What lawyer, going to a stupid, crass and propagandistic movie, comes out ready to vote for Kerry?
I would submit that your friend intelligence is on trial here, not President Bush.
Way to go, Dude!
Don't waste your time with her, she is a lawyer, and they always vote for a Democrat, because they love litigation and chasing ambulances...and after all John Kerry and John Edwards are both lawyers. Forget her.
The tact I am taking is to tell the leftist[s] that I think Moore is a marketing genius. He recognized that there was an element of American society that hates Bush and they are perfect fodder for a some capitalist pig like Moore to take advantage of people by purposefully creating a film is designed to play on peoples emotions.
That is to get their attention. Then I point out his hypocrisy of pretending to be a anti-capitalist, but living in a million dollar home(s). Then I start on the lies in the movie. I will ask them if they really, really are ready to believe the Bush started a war, killing many American military, just so he and his so called oil buddies can make a few extra buck? Are they really ready to believe that? If not they need to question all the crappolla Moore spewed forth.
Some commentaries that are applicable:
1. Ed Koch, former Mayor of New York, and a life-long Democrat.
2. Christopher Hitchens wrote a good commentary.
3. Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenbull are also good.
4. Michael Barone also has a commentary.
5. Mark Steyn has a good commentary.
6. Dave Kopel lists 56 deceits in the 'documentary'.
7. Brent Bozell also is good.
All of these reviews are damning about Moore's total lack of honesty and integrity.
"She is very smart lawyer, but like most Americans doesn't follow politics very closely."
Yet this smart lawyer who does not follow politics is swayed to vote for Kerry after seeing a fluff film filled with zero facts. Sounds like a bogus story to me and the smart lawyer lady is definetly not like most logical thinking Americans. Liberals on the other hand...duh
She's either a leftist pretending to be fair-minded (most likely), or she's fair-minded but dumber than a bag of hammers.
I'd say she was a leftist, they always pretend to be somebody they're not. I bet she's a legal secretary and nothing moore... eh heh heh
