New SC Poll Shows DeMint Leading

First post run-off poll has DeMint at 50%; Presidential race will be a drag on Tenenbaum

(The following is an excerpted press release from the National Republican Senatorial Committee this morning)

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jim DeMint’s strong and impressive victory in last Tuesday’s Republican run-off in South Carolina has him well positioned as the general election heads into high gear. A poll conducted this week shows him holding a firm lead over Democratic challenger Inez Tenenbaum – 50% to 43%.

...The poll shows that DeMint’s name ID equals that of Tenenbaum’s, while overall his image among South Carolina voters is more favorable. Of the voters who have already formed opinions of both candidates, DeMint’s lead increases to 13 points – 52% to 39%.

Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies (POS), the pollster who conducted the survey wrote that, “Jim DeMint has used a strong run-off victory as a springboard to vault past Inez Tenenbaum and into the lead in the South Carolina Senate race.”

Even more troubling for Tenenbaum and Democrats, both in South Carolina and nationally, is the drag that Democratic presidential nominee, John Kerry, will be on her campaign in the rock solid Republican state. South Carolina voters have a more unfavorable than favorable opinion of Kerry, with 40% favorable to 45% unfavorable. In sharp contrast, President Bush carries a hefty 61% favorable to 36% unfavorable.

In a head-to-head match-up, South Carolinians are solidly backing President Bush over Kerry – 55% to 40%....

I was never looking at him as a candidate to begin with. Frankly, I'm a lot more concerned with Bush in 2004 than Mystery Candidate in 2008.

That didn't stop them in 2002 when the rest of the nation roundly rejected the Dems but Louisiana managed to send the despicable Mary Landrieu back into the Senate after a runoff.

Of course, she had been in her stealth "conservative" mode for two years voting with Bush on tax cuts and pro-life measures. Chris John has never won a state-wide election and despite being a John Breaux "moderate", he won't have a voting record to back it up.

Well, it's the same thing as in 2003. Louisiana seems to have this strange affection for John Breaux. He strikes me as a total jerk, but, they take his word as a new chapter of the Gospel.

2003 was a different story altogether. Jindal lost b/c he was a minority. Any other post-hoc rationalizations are wishful thinking.

I was in a sushi restuarant in Lafayette about a year ago. The menu features a John Breaux roll. When I asked what was in it? A quick witted conservative colleague noted that it costs too much, it has no taste and you have to subsidize the other tables that order it.

Never overestimate the intelligence of voters in LA or AR.

This time, though, we have a much stronger, well-funded candidate, the strongest we've had in Louisiana since......um...... Mary Landrieu turned that race around in the final days in 2002 without the national party. If John or Kennedy have skills they can do the same, maybe, but we'll see.

Breaux, sort of like Leiberman or even Bayh or Richardson is somewhat less obnoxious and threatening than your typical Dem politician and I assume he has a strong machine in the Pelican State. The Dems have gotten so wacky that folks who don't scream and swell temporal arteries in their histrionics against W seem sort of moderate...even if they aren't.

BE, do you have any evidence other than anecdotal on the Jindahl and racism charge. I'm skeptical. My experience in the South nowadays is that folks stumble all over themselves to vote for minority conservatives...sort of the way folks do on this forum disproportionately fawning over one particular black/female high level government official.
