UN Confirms: WMDs Smuggled Out of Iraq
© June 18, 2004, Rod D. Martin
In a report which might alternately be termed stunning or terrifying, United Nations weapons inspectors confirmed last week not merely that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, but that he smuggled them out of his country, before, during and after the war.
Late last week, the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) briefed the Security Council on Saddam's lightning-fast dismantling of missile and WMD sites before and during the war. UNMOVIC executive chairman Demetrius Perricos detailed not only the export of thousands of tons of missile components, nuclear reactor vessels and fermenters for chemical and biological warheads, but also the discovery of many (but not most) of these items - with UN inspection tags still on them -- as far afield as Jordan, Turkey and even Holland.
Notably absent from that list is Iraq's western neighbor Syria, ruled by its own Baath Party just like Saddam's and closed to even the thought of an UNMOVIC inspection. Israeli intelligence has been reporting the large-scale smuggling of Saddam's WMD program across the Syrian border since at least two months before the war. Syria has long been the world's foremost state-sponsor of terrorism.
Perricos highlighted the proliferation danger to the Security Council, as well he should: UNMOVIC has no idea where most of the WMD material is today, just that it exists and it's gone; and anything in Syria is likely to be in Jerusalem or New York tomorrow.
This is the biggest news story of 2004 so far. Yet you haven't heard about it, have you?
You probably haven't heard about Canada's Prime Minister Paul Martin either -- a socialist and no friend of America. Addressing a group of 700 university researchers and business leaders in Montreal last month, Martin stated bluntly that terrorists have acquired WMDs from Saddam. The fact is that there is now, we know well, a proliferation of nuclear weapons, and that many weapons that Saddam Huseein had, we don't know where they are . [T]errorists have access to all of them, the Canadian premier warned.
The tip of this terrorist sword was scarcely deflected on April 26th, when Jordanian intelligence broke up an al Qaeda conspiracy to detonate a large chemical device in the capital city of Amman. Directed by al Qaeda terrorist leader Abu al-Zarqawi -- the same man who personally beheaded American Nicholas Berg in Iraq last month -- the plotters sought to use a massive explosion to spread a toxic cloud, meant to wipe out the U.S. embassy, the Jordanian prime minister's office, the Jordanian intelligence headquarters, and at least 20,000 civilians (by contrast, only 3,000 died on 9/11). Over twenty tons of chemical weapons were seized from the conspirators, who were just days away from carrying out their plot.
One wonders where CNN and USA Today think twenty tons of nerve gas and sarin came from: Chemical Weapons-Mart? Yet their coverage, like most major media outlets, mentioned not a word about Saddam's smuggled WMDs, which -- according to liberal dogma -- don't exist.
Even though the UN says they do exist, now spread around the world.
It's not just the UN. Bill Clinton says they exist, even after the war: in a July 2003 interview with Larry King, the ex-president uncharacteristically defended George Bush, saying it is incontestable that on the day I left office, there [was] a substantial amount of biological and chemical material unaccounted for in Iraq. Every intelligence agency in the world -- French, British, German, Russian, Czech, you name it -- agreed before the war; Jordanian intelligence can certainly confirm their opinion today.
So what's the deal? Why the relentless pretence that Bush lied when even the UN and Bill Clinton say he didn't? Why the absolute silence about inconvenient parts of various UN reports, such as the discovery of chemical and biological weapons plans, recipes and equipment; of bio-weapons agents in an Iraqi scientist's house; of a prison lab for testing bio weapons on humans; of complexes for manufacturing fuel for prohibited long-range missiles; of artillery rounds containing enough sarin to kill thousands of people, of similar shells containing mustard gas, two (but far from the only) of which were used in a terrorist attack against U.S. forces just weeks ago?
America cannot afford the answer to this why: that many on the left consider George W. Bush's defeat more urgent than al Qaeda's, his political death more essential than the possible physical death of millions of Americans.
The character of our foreign enemies has never been in doubt. The character of the enemy within -- from Dan Rather to Michael Moore -- has never been clearer. And the stakes are the highest they've ever been.

This stunning piece of news (that we Freeper all knew anyway) needs to be broadcasted on every abc news channel in the country. It won't of course, because it will only help President Bush.
BTTT
Certainly believable. If you recall, Iraq flew its jet fighters to Iran prior to the Gulf War to protect them. For some reason, everyone seems to ignore Saddam's MO.
But, Blix stated, whilst picking the escargot from his teeth in Paris, "We have found nothing, no WMDs, no weapons, no plans, Mr. Saddam is like the toothfairy, a good man. BURP!"
I might add that Jim Quinn has been reporting for the last week or so that Libya was housing Iraqi scientists and materials in an underground facility that was working on nuclear technology. Not a word elsewhere that I've seen.
Also, don't hold your breath about a reduction in the claptrap. The defeat of President Bush is a much higher priority than keeping our cities intact and our people from being gassed to death, or didn't you get the memo?
I think you and I both know that this would be (will be) a bull-crap argument.
Saddam was (probably) involved in the 1993 WTC bombing, (most likely) provided training for the 2001 WTC attacks, and wasn't building WMD's for another losing Conventional War against Iran... but rather for Asymmetrical Terrorist and Proliferation Warfare against the USA.
I've read both the "Pro-War" and "Anti-War" sources, and have come to the conclusion that the above (bolded paragraph) is probably closest to the Truth. Or, at least, close enough for Government Work.
I do, still, wish we had attempted Assassination and Regime Destablization first -- prior to outright War (as I said before: "Go Ehud [see Judges 3]! That great, Biblical example of Ethically-Christian, no-collateral-damage, Assassination.")
The problem right now is HUGE. They have stopped the war on terror in order to rebuild Iraq. Perhaps Iraq should eventually be rebuilt, but only after all the terrorist host nations are gone. They are not. We MUST: 1. Conquer Syria. Period...there is no other answer. 2. Conquer Iran. Their nuclear program and their harboring of terrorists for years (they are actually the MAJOR terrorist nation....not Iraq) makes them a necessary conquest. 3. Overthrow Saudi. 4. Defeat Musharraff's enemies in Pakistan in detail, and then turn against any mountain taliban/al qaeda. 5. Fully support Putin in the muslim provinces of the former soviet -- Chechnya, Khazastan, etc. 6. Same #4 in Philippines and Indonesia.
Your program for a "World War II style Victory" will require at least $500 Billion which has already been earmarked by Bush for the Kennedy Education Bill, Farm Subsidies, and Rebuilding Iraq.
The Money is there (we're already running a $500 Billion dollar deficit, anyway), if you can pry it from the Pork-Barrels into which it is already sunk.
I doubt this will happen.
I continue to think another option might work, also -- Get Out. Spend a few Tens of Billions developing the Canadian Oil Sands (more Oil than Saudi Arabia) and tell the Middle East: "We don't want, or need, you anymore. 'Great Satan'? Hardly -- We're now the 'Great Irrelevance' on the other side of the World, with no interest in you whatsoever. Why don't you get back to killing eachother again, and knock on our door in another 1,000 years when you've decided which one of y'all are the 'True Muslims'?"
However, this won't happen, either.
My own expectation is that political inertia will reign, and we will build a few basis in Iraq, support a local "Puppet Government" as riddled with Anti-Americanists as that of our "friends" the Saudis, and remain neck-deep in a snake-pit which costs us far more Blood and Treasure than it delivers to us in Oil.
Sorry, but that's how I see it.
Oh, admittedly, there is the possibility that Iraq might develop into the "Lady Liberty of the Middle East".
I rate this about as likely as the 65% Shi'ite Population of Iraq voluntarily giving up their tradition of beating their own heads with swords.
So are we going to get an apology?
[Insert sound of crickets chirping here]
Fox covered this on virtually every program they have. I know because it's the only news channel I watch anymore. Most pundits are saying it's scrap metal that's showing up in Rotterdam, etc. Yes, with the UN inspection tags still on it. The Rotterdam material was still radioactive.
This shuts the door on Kerry, thank God. Bush might win 49 states if he now starts shouting THIS out day after day, refuse to argue and point to the document, read out of it daily, always refer to it, etc.
And if he (and the Iraqi government, the official state religion in their constitution being Islam) drops the hammer on each and every hardline islamofascist in Iraq instead of backing off, negotiating and HOLDING CEASE-EFFING-FIRES-THEN-PULLING-OUT-NEGOTIATIONS with the ENEMY, he might not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Did anyone see us bend over for the UN and screw our military yesterday in regards to The Hague? Nice./sarcasm
The same Michael Moore types screaming 'Bush lied' now will be the first to scream 'Bush did nothing to protect us' when a bomb goes off over here.
I hope the left gets smacked down in November. Then they will scream 'Bush stole another election'. *sigh*
I think your evaluation is a good one. I do disagree with it at one point, though. I do not believe the history and tradition of Islam indicate that they will cease and desist in fomenting terror against the US simply because we pull out and stop using their oil.
There is no nation of any other culture that borders an islamic nation that is not at war with them. Since we are the world's economic behemoth we will of necessity be involved in the economies of all those attacked nations, and we will not be able to ignore it.
They truly are bent on world conquest, and our withdrawal will only embolden them.
Fight the war now. Get it over with. Militarily we are more than capable SO LONG AS we don't try to occupy territory and instead restrict ourselves to overthrowing governments.
Pray for W and The Truth
Does anyone have the quote from Ann Coulter about the dirty bomb found in NY harbor? That also got very little attention.
BTTT!!!!!!
When was this?
trust me, this will be huge after Kerry accepts the nomination. This might not come out until Bush's accept speech. Basically, Bush is daring Kerry and the media to accept the truth. Of course, they won't admit the truth, which will make September through the election all the more fun!
