E.L. Doctorow, one of the most celebrated writers in America, was nearly booed off the stage at Hofstra University Sunday when he gave a commencement address lambasting President George W. Bush and effectively calling him a liar.
Booing that came mainly from the crowd in the stands became so intense that Doctorow stopped speaking at one point...
Doctorow, who spent virtually all of his 20-minute address in Hempstead criticizing Bush, told the crowd that like himself the president is a storyteller. But "sadly they are not good stories this president tells," he said. "They are not good stories because they are not true." That line provoked the first boos, along with scattered cheers.
...Those lines provoked an outburst of boos so loud the "Ragtime" author stopped the speech... He attacked Bush for giving the rich tax breaks, doing "a very poor job of combating terrorism" and allowing the government to subpoena libraries "to see what books you've been taking out."
Many parents and relatives were livid over the address... Bill Schmidt, 51, of North Bellmore, shared the outrage. "To ruin my daughter's graduation with politics is pathetic" ...
One Hofstra official said Sunday that while Doctorow had the right to say what he did, he violated the unwritten code that college commencement speeches should inspire and unite a student body. Provost Dr. Herman Berliner said he has been to numerous graduation ceremonies during the past 30 years and "I cannot remember a commencement speech that was as divisive as this commencement speech was."

And I thought Brokaw was bad -- this guy was a lot worse!
Perhaps there is hope...... and a better future will come from our youth. Seems they may realize that if the left wins....it's all over.
We need much more of this!

Machts nichts!
WTH does this shiite have to do with graduation! Unbelieveable.
Wonder how much money that's gonna cost the university. If I were a donor I'd never give them another cent.
I don't get it. You would think that speakers like this would get applauded at college graduations like all of the Hollyweirdos at the Cannes File Fest in France cheering Micheal Moore.
Maybe Bush itsn't as unpopular as the poll suggest?
Freedom of speech doesn't guarantee freedom from the stage hook. He has the right to speak his mind. He also runs the risk of getting shouted down. Something liberals have a fundamental problem with unless their dogma is being exclusively spouted- ESPECIALLY in academia.
I completely understand why the parents and students are pis*ed off about this.
Last year, I graduated from the Univ of Minnesota and our commencement speaker was a Judge Burgdorf from the UN's Intl Court of Justice.
His speech essentially said that the US was wrong not to be more of an active participant in the UN.
Of course, the multitudes of mush-filled grads stood up and applauded at the end of his speech...but I didn't. Neither did a scattering of other students who remained in our seats, silent.
I guess nothing should surprise me anymore about the Univ of Minnesota, a refuge of liberalism in a state that is no longer so liberal. But I resented that all my years of work had to be tarnished by an un-elected leftist judge from the UN.
Hardly what one would call a "commencement speech".
Why can't these speakers think of those graduating and wish them well?
Simple solution.
When I graduated from the Univ of Miinesota last spring, I was glad I didn't get the opportunity to confront the commencement speaker, an un-elected judge from the UN's Intl Court of Justice.
There would have been no vulgarities or threats by me...just a simple "You're a disgrace to your profession".
They never miss a chance to spread their hatred.
What was the first, please?
Then you are apparently not enlightened enough like the liberal elite and the Europeans. BTW, I have no idea who this guy is either. :-)
Oh....won't they be shocked when we 'reach out and touch them'.

Oh no.. don't tell me it was the musical Ragtime... Iloved it
When a liberal I know complained about getting a tax rebate I asked him why he didn't just return it. His answer was, "Who am I going to send it to?" THe IRS is more than happy to take the money.
