May 16, 2004 -- Dr. Atkins' disciples are eating major food companies alive. The low-carb diet trend is turning the stomachs of the makers of traditional staples like bread and pasta, who are blaming their shrinking profits on shrinking waistlines.

Being slim is great, but if you eat many processed carbs (pasta is made from white flour) you can still get diabetes. This is a metabolic process. Also, carbs have been known (not known how) to play a role in inflamation. I can tell you my arthritic knee has improved greatly while low carbing. I have a couple of very thin friends who have attested to the same results. It is not just a matter of losing weight. I play tennis in Atlanta-very warm. We play three sets. Although, if the game is close we can play alot more. I eat protein and vegetables (green) before a match. I also eat berries. I have plenty of energy and always complete my matches. I eat low carb, high fiber bread. I eat pasta sometimes (like it), but I eat a high fiber version (low carb)-new quite delicious. It comes in a black box. I can't think of the name. I eat high fiber low processed grain (small amounts), fresh fruit and vegetable and meat. I feel great and my cholesterol is now 160-down over 20 points from high carb, low fat days. Everyone is different and responds to food in a unique way, but certain foods-white sugar, white flour, white rice etc- are bad for you whether you gain weight or not because they has little/no nutritional value.
I read his book 2 years ago, and I don't remember him placing primary importance on physical fitness, he gave it a cursory review, and as a Doctor I found that to be a shirking of his responsibility.
He died from head trauma slipping on ice. That CV stuff has been debunked and he was also EIGHTY years old. We can hope to only have a bit of plaque at 80 instead of taking a dirt nap. Step away from the PETA front group press releases.
Congrats on your promotion......and I would expect you are probably correct in your assessment about it.
My husband spent nearly 30 years in construction and was always trim and fit, but swinging a hammer and pounding up and down ladders for that many years finally took it's toll and he now has a jacket and tie job that is not quite as physically demanding. Yet he still remains trim and fit.
I think much of that is because of a minimum of processed foods in our diet, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Yes we eat lots of meats and fish and carbs, but do balance them all out.
Perhaps not, but you most definitely have a problem with admitting when your reach has overcome your grasp. Is it that costly for you to admit making an assumption that was invalid?
It's a diet book, not an exercise book. But it seems obvious you're not going to concede the point with anything approaching polite correction.
I don't know of any diet book that places fitness first, otherwise it would be an exercise book not a diet book :) I'm not a doctor but I play one in a health food store btw hehehehe and all I meet are lazy people. They don't want to eat less and exercise.
It all started when they closed TipTop Baking Co. (smile)
The premise behind the movie "Supersize Me" is so silly that I can't believe anybody would waste their money seeing it. Based on your menu choices you could gain or lose weight at any chain restaurant.
Since going on this low-carb lifestyle, I have found the salads at the fast-food chains quite acceptable. Especially the salads at Wendy's. Only I don't order them with any dressing. I keep a bottle of olive oil in the glove compartment of my car when I am on the road so that I can use that instead. For some reason, the fast food places do not offer olive oil as a substitute for dressing which is a shame because olive oil is so good for you.
He wasn't some regular schmuck just doing a diet book, he was a Doctor, for crying out loud, that changes the equation a little bit, IMO.
But here you go, I was wrong you're right, it was a diet book, end of story.
Thanks for the link. I don't know of anyone who eats McDonald's like that other guy.
Big Bucks is the hidden agenda of everything.
I could not live with - out Carbs. lots of them, and I'm as healthy as they come. not too fat and not too skinny.
just too old (smile)
Along with the "nutrtional experts" who are desperately trying to convince the public their training is still relevant.
I don't. Rural Asians are physically active and do more walking in a day than the average American does in a week (and in flip-flops or barefoot). Now in the urban areas of China, Japan, and elsewhere, obesity is becoming a major concern. Especially since packaged, processed foods are beginng to show up in supermarkets even there.
The salads at Wendy's are delicious. I don't have a weight problem, so I eat the whole package, but they do make a great meal at work.
Thos pictures are amazing. Congratulations to you and the Mrs. for taking such good care of yourselves. You cannot imagine the pain and disability you are saving yourself from.
"Ideally what you should do (the rhetorical you, that is) is about 15 to 20 minutes of strength training, and 30 to 45 minutes of Moderate aerobics, six days, even 5 would do, a week. "
I can't even walk anymore and I have a dog that is getting fatter but your regieme is not for me I only have one tool left and that is diet.
Any carb cause me to crave more carbs.
Exactly. For his next film, he should enroll in useless classes in a dozen ivy league schools, and demonstrate how he comes out an even bigger dumbass than when he started. He could call it "Stupid-Size Me."
I'd watch Supersize Me if it were just a show on TV. No way I'd pay money. I saw the guy on Tony Snow and he's WEIRD. Sounds like a doper baby to me too *lol*
Atkins is definately for you then, and I know people who do low carb using chicken and fish and cheeses without the beef, etc.
