May 16, 2004 -- Dr. Atkins' disciples are eating major food companies alive. The low-carb diet trend is turning the stomachs of the makers of traditional staples like bread and pasta, who are blaming their shrinking profits on shrinking waistlines.

Yes there is and she is on my low-carb plan also! (Though I prefer to call it a "normal-carb" plan.) She's lost 30 pounds since last September and if I can convince her to go on my morning walks with me (I walk four miles every morning at 5AM), she'll lose the rest even faster. Thanks for the comment!
Also wild fruit is very different from the fruit we have today. It was smaller, had more fiber and a lot less sugar.
Ever had a wild orange? Your mouth is stuck in a pucker for about three days.
"I don't believe that Atkins places first importance on fitness."
First I want to say that at 57 and being an ex-marathon runner I can no longer excerise as I once could and only diet can control my weight. I ran 30 miles per week for years and now have no knees left and back problems that prohibit most aerobic activities.
So I find that even a bowl of oatmeal in the morning causes my weight to increase. And magically eating eggs each morning no weight gain -- I have a cholestrol of 107/67 -- so that ain't bad and not what my family doctor would predict given my high fat diet.
Two comments:
Comment one: Media says, "Aiiiieeee, it's a disaster, all Americans are fat and none will diet!!!"
(Later that same planet)
Same media says, "Aiiiieeee, it's a disaster, all Americans are doing Atkins and high-carb companies are going bankrupt!!!"
Comment two: the explanation for this would be the maxim, "If it bleeds, it leads." If that is true, why didn't the appalling Berg murder displace the embarrassment and wretched mistreatment of a few enemy prisoners by a few worthless American soldiers?
Again I find myself asking myself, "Is it a sin for a Christian to hate the media?" Because... it's danged hard not to. They are beneath contempt.

One chapter does not primary importance make, it's cursory. I really don't have anything against Atkins, or his diet. A decent amount of protein is necessary. I just see that as a doctor he should have been as dedicated to the aspect of physical fitness as he was diet. But he was trying to sell his products, he's no different than the bread seller in that regard.
Just to my revise my remarks in the above because the word binge has certain connotations.
What I meant as "binge", was snacking on a half bag of tortilla chips, that were marked down by 50% and eating them with nicely refridgerated salsa for 3 days in a row.
The article says, "shrinking waistlines." I was out and about yesterday and I've seen little evidence of that.
That's just the diet book. However, he had a very popular radio show here in New York where he did talk about exercise a lot (esp. walking). You know what? A lot of people are LAZY and that's diets that tell people they don't have to exercise sell a lot. I think Atkins developed a reputation for a no-exercise diet thanks to some adherents but not necessaerily to Atkins.
Indeed, diet fads are cyclical (although this low carb business has been elevated to the status of near religion). And yet, Amercia gets fatter and fatter. Go figure.
LOL!!!!!!
Sorry to hear about the weight gain.........but I just found your definition of "binge" amusing. I would consider your "binge" more of a "splurge"!!!!!
I hope you mixed in some sour cream with the salsa, sticks to the chip better. I'm going running...
A big part of my success doing low-carb has been the elimination of nearly all processed foods. All that nasty high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils (trans-fats), etc., was doing me no good at all. Since keeping my foods simple and as natural as possible, I feel so much better physically and mentally that losing the weight ended up being only a minor side-effect.
In fact, I recently received a promotion at work and there is no doubt in my mind that my lifestyle change brought it about. I come to work with so much energy now and I project such a positive attitude that doors are opening up to me that were closed before.
Just go read the book will you? Then I will argue with you.
If I remember right, though, the guy who's buffet experience made the news was on something like his 12th serving, and he had eaten enough that management was afraid there wouldn't be enough for everyone else.
Lots of Atkins followers seem to forget that the plan does not encourage you to gorge yourself.
Tortilla chips was one of my favorite snack foods before my lifestyle change. I'd eat them by the bag and when I went to Mexican restaurants, I'd ask for a second bowl to have with my meal. I too have noticed that when I try to work them back into my diet, I'll quickly gain back a pound or two. Even though the only chips I'll eat are the ones with all-natural ingredients. So even now, I have to watch myself with them.
Tony Snow had the guy from Supersize Me on about his experience of gaining twenty five pounds in a month from eating only McDonald's *LOL* I wonder if he only ate the meat what would have happened.
Ideally what you should do (the rhetorical you, that is) is about 15 to 20 minutes of strength training, and 30 to 45 minutes of Moderate aerobics, six days, even 5 would do, a week. Moderate because high-end aerobics have a tendency to break down muscle mass, that's why marathon runners look the way they do.
Fitness first, diet second works for me. I have to say though, that I never eat desserts unless someone's having a birthday or there is a celebration. Fruit, cheese and nuts is what I end my lunch and dinner with, and after I've put in the kind of work I do for my body, I'm not about to pollute it with store bought cookies or cakes or ice-cream, splenda or no splenda.
I used to eat wild strawberries as a kid...they grew in the outfield, which was the position I always got assigned. I may not have paid too much attention to the game.
I have noticed that "feral" citrus fruit seems to lose much of its sweetness, citrus trees that have been abandoned and are just growing wild in the jungle. It's not nearly so sweet as the stuff we farm.
Once, years ago, on a Boy Scout hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we came upon a wild apple tree that was bearing fruit. Those apples were really sour...but wonderful. I have always wished since for an apple that tasted like that, but never found one in a store.
Man, that's great. I have not lost as much but I have lost about 40 and I feel better than ever. Eating better than ever, too. The food pyramid is as deadly to the people of this country as nicotine. The dietary advice of the federal govt is literally killing us. The sheeple need to awaken before they die of heart attacks or diabetes b/c that is where most are headed.
