a copperhead was a member of the opposition party who thought the war couldn't be won and cost too much. they wanted to end the war. they hated the president, libeled and mocked him all the time, thought he was stupid. they had more sympathy for the enemy then for their own country. they thought the black man was too stupid to live on his own and certainly not worth fighting for. they had a failed military man as their presidential candidate. they had numerous newspapers and media condemning the administration. this was in 1864.
let's compare with today. no difference. democrats were copperheads then, they are copperheads now.

The only copperhead I know of is a genre of rattlesnake noted for it's unpredictable behavior.

TrueBlackMan ran across this originally and credit should be given to him. He's a humble cuss but recently protested with fellow Washington, DC Freepers outside a bookstore there where Hillary was signing books for her worshippers. He got in line twice and got two signings before the Borders store picked up on what was going on and started hassling the bunch (who were on the public sidewalk). If I came that close to concentrated evil I'm sure my sphincter would fail. TBM is the man! I'd post the link to that if I could find it.
