TweakUI was developed by Microsoft developers for their own use. MS has released and updated it from time to time, but without any guarantees.

But I've never heard of anybody having trouble with it.

if one does install updated from OEM's does it mess up the next microsoft update. My system automatically makes me check with M/S occasionally; I never come up with anything critical and have no known problems, but I'd want to know if my using these updates would preclude my ever using ones from M/S again.

Bookmarking for the day (if it happens) when my win98SE desktop works well enough to get me back online.

I think you can accomplish the same thing by using Windows Update. But without a fast connection it would take you a long time, since there have been so many updates since 98SE was released.

If this is correct, you still would need to update Internet Explorer, Media Player, and probably a bunch of other stuff.

One of the happiest eras in my computer life came when I abandoned W98 for good for W2K. Good riddance.

That's a good question!

Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer.

My suspicion is that the download of this 3rd party packet would have a negative influence on any future update one would want to persue via the OEM.

With all of THAT code, it would be fairly easy to slip in a little something extra which might compromise a system's security.

Of course, this guy is fairly easy to track down.

Alas! It did not work, still got the memory error on boot.

I'm going ahead with XP on the new machine.

"people are still running Windows 95"

That's me. I have one 95 computer. I have not retire the old 33 P1 because it is the only computer I have that runs my JuteBox software. My JuteBox software communicates with a 300 CD player. Any idea how long it take to input titles on 300 CD's? One day it will crash and I'll be screwed.

n any future update one would want to persue via the OEM.

The OEM isn't going to do anymore updates except for security critical issues. MS has basically washed it's hands of the OS at this point.

I remember being disappointed when I bought a new m/b capable of installing 1GB of RAM, tried it, and then found out that all M$ 98 could handle was 768 (with some tweaking).

Now there are two 512MB computers running 98SE rather than one running 1GB and XP. :-)

At work I have to have a W98se boot CDR on hand to "fix" the XP machine 'cause XP won't let one directly access the disk (e.g. for using a disk editor).

P.S. DOS runs REALLY fast on a relatively current computer.

I have a Pentium II 300 mhz with 256 megs ram... will XP help or hinder? I hate this Windows 98.

I just went to the guy's web site and tried his tip to reduce M$ W98SE swap file thrashing. Seems to work for me (much less disk activity and a swap file ~ 1/2 the size).

Add "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" in the [enh386] section of sys.ini, save and reboot.

XP is very controllable and user configurable. You just have to learn how to use MMC.

Your machine does not have enough power or memory to run XP. Also, if you hate 98, XP will make you want to kill the world.

MMC is short for what? I'm willing to learn.

Microsoft Management Console-Think of it as Regedt32 with everything spelled out. Much like Regedt32 you can seriously screw yourself as well.
