Discussion Thread: Kerry's Appearance on GMA Regarding Medals
Good Morning America - ABC News

Posted on 04/26/2004 5:09:02 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Let's see if I can kick this off.

During the promo at the beginning of the show, where he was standing by live in West Virginia, and throughout the interview itself, Kerry tried hard to keep this huge "what me worry?" smile plastered on his face. He coupled it with numerous condescending head shakes that seemed to imply "these poor benighted fools who so miserably misunderstand the greatness that is John Kerry."

The NYT has an article about the ribbons/medals lies in today's edition.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1124415/posts

Throughout much of his political career, Senator John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, has faced questions about a singular event that took place 33 years ago last week: he and fellow veterans discarded medals in Washington to protest the war in Vietnam.

The Kerry campaign Web site says it is "right-wing fiction" that he "threw away his medals during a Vietnam War protest."

Rather, the Web site says, "John Kerry threw away his ribbons and the medals of two veterans who could not attend the event."

But the issue is not so cut and dried. A television interview Mr. Kerry gave in November 1971 shows that Mr. Kerry himself fed the confusion from early on. The New York Times obtained a videotape of the interview late last week...(snip)

"I'm glad to be with you. I really am."
The very first words out of his mouth were a lie. This guy's in trouble

Good point. "I'm so glad to be on the carpet again for yet another lie and flip-flop." Right. For that matter, he began lying even before he started talking. Did you catch the huge, phony "what me worry," smile he had plastered on his face during the promo for the interview? As if he couldn't have been happier and more eager to have the conversation. Yeah, right!

- I fell down/I don't fall down.
- I have an SUV/My family has an SUV.
- I voted for the bill/I didn't vote for the bill.
- I threw the medals over the fence/I didn't throw the medals over the fence.
- I won't question how anyone served/George Bush can't even prove he served.

What have I left out?

- I committed war crimes/I didn't commit war crimes Kerry speaks about HIS War Crimes

Do you consider that you personally as a Naval officer committed atrocities in Vietnam or crimes punishable by law in this country?

KERRY: There are all kinds of atrocities, and I would have to say that, yes, yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed in that I took part in shootings in free fire zones. I conducted harassment and interdiction fire. I used 50 calibre machine guns, which we were granted and ordered to use, which were our only weapon against people. I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages. All of this is contrary to the laws of warfare, all of this is contrary to the Geneva Conventions and all of this is ordered as a matter of written established policy by the government of the United States from the top down.

[snip]

MR. RUSSERT: Thirty years later, you stand by that?

SEN. KERRY: I don't stand by the genocide. I think those were the words of an angry young man. We did not try to do that.

- The US does not need approval to act/We need an international coalition and UN approval before we can act Flashback! Excerpt from Kerry on CrossFire in 1997 (Kerry RIPS into France, et al)

"That's very strong language. And it also references the underlying resolution on which the use of force is based. So clearly the allies may not like it, and I think that's our great concern -- where's the backbone of Russia, where's the backbone of France, where are they in expressing their condemnation of such clearly illegal activity, but in a sense, they're now climbing into a box and they will have enormous difficulty not following up on this if there is not compliance by Iraq."

"...there's absolutely no statement that they have made or that they will make that will prevent the United States of America and this president or any president from acting in what they believe are the best interests of our country."

"So furthermore, I think the United States has always reserved the right and will reserve the right to act in its best interests. And clearly it is not just our best interests, it is in the best interests of the world to make it clear to Saddam Hussein that he's not going to get away with a breach of the '91 agreement that he's got to live up to, which is allowing inspections and dismantling his weapons and allowing us to know that he has dismantled his weapons. That's the price he pays for invading Kuwait and starting a war."

"...are duty bound to enforce and if Saddam Hussein doesn't do that, the president, I think, has begun a process which you remember very well, John, was not done in one week, in one day, in one month. It took months to weave together the fabric to lead up to an understanding of what was at stake. I am convinced that many people have not yet even focused in ull measure on what is at stake."

(more I was FOR the war before I was against it)

I'm beginning to wonder if he ever was awarded any to begin with. I'm wondering since he had political connections did he get Lehman to give him some medals he wasn't awarded to replace the ones he didn't throw over the fence.

There is no doubt that Kerry was awarded the medals. There is ample documentation including the citations signed by Zumwalt and ADM Hyland (CINPAC). As you note, it is the Lehman signed citations that raise questions. Kerry has some more 'splaining to do.

He called the President "George Bush"? Looks like he is getting angry and desperate if he declines to follow common courtesy by prefixing the word "President", as is usually done. This is because they don't believe that President Bush was elected legitimately.

Yes. If you watch the movie Feed, you can see pre-interview footage of Candidate Clinton psyching himself up for a remote interview and launching into a spontaneous laugh for the cut to him.

FRAUD. PHONEY. Then again we all know that Bill Clinton lied on camera, lied under oath, and cried on cue.

This is because they don't believe that President Bush was elected legitimately.

There are several announcers who persist in calling him Mr. Bush (one of them does top of the hour news for ABC Radio).

I feel cheated that I didn't get my National Defense "medal". Snigger!

Air force semi-dress allowed one to wear ribbons on the short or long sleeve blue shirt worn without the blouse. Probably 20 percent did wear ribbons on their semi-dress.

As one ancient E-5 told me, it shows you "been there" far better than extra stripes do. This particular guy had 4 or 5 rows, including one I had never seen. It turned out to be a Canadian "Mentioned In Dispatches" he had earned while in the Canadian army during the Korean conflict.

Add it to the list:

he said that W's guard service was not an issue in this campaign. Now it is.

I held off on posting about this because I couldn't think of good search terms for this quote. The AWOL issue stretched out for 2 weeks (one week of that after the documents had proven he was there).

Kerry never did say that the documents prove George W. Bush was there, he just tried to call off the attack dogs by saying "we don't need to go there". Don't admit defeat.

Lehman could answer a lot of questions on this citation issue if he wants to. He's one of the few Republicans that showed any flashes of cajones as a 911 commissioner (comparatively speaking only, of course).

I doubt if he'll shed any light on the subject because the commissioners "don't want to be partisan or political" (of course, the only ones adhering to this policy are the Republicans).

Life can be so frustrating.....

Sadly, I doubt any other networks other than Fox will even touch the story... unless they want to help avenge how Charlie Gibson was treated by Lurch.

I've been boycotting MSNBC, but I confess that this morning when Fox started talking Michael Jackson I surfed over and lo and behold they were covering this Kerry medal story.

I doubt that Lehman ever knew about it, well in this case he might have. All of the signatures on certificates that I have seen were just rubber stamped and not the original signature.

So, medals and ribbons aren't really interchangeable then, if there are ribbons that don't have corresponding medals. Am I reading you correctly?

The ribbon signifies award of the medal. If you were given a medal, you got a corresponding ribbon. Wear of medals is generally restricted to formal occasions. Ribbons are required wear on Class "A" uniforms, optional on semi-dress (shirt sleeve blues in the USAF) and never worn on utilities. Medals are worn on the Class "A" on formal occasions.

The ribbons that don't have a corresponding medal are those that are awarded automatically, or to a group of people such as outstanding unit citations, etc. Most of what is seen over the left breast pocket are the latter type ribbons. "Fruit salad" is the common term for the left chest full of ribbons.
