WELKIN |
The sky; heaven; the firmament We dont use this much nowadaysdictionaries usually tag it as archaic or literaryexcept in the set phrase make the welkin ring, meaning to make a very loud sound. What supposedly rings in this situation is the vault of heaven, the bowl of the sky. In older cosmology this was thought to be one of a set of real crystal spheres that enclosed the Earth, to which the planets and stars were attached, so it would have been capable of ringing like a bell if you made enough noise. The word comes from the Old English wolcen, a cloud, related to the Dutch wolk and German Wolke. Very early on, for example in the epic poem Beowulf of about the eighth century AD, the phrase under wolcen meant under the sky or under heaven (the bard used the plural, wolcnum, but its the same word). Ever since, it has had a strong literary or poetic connection. It appears often in Shakespeare and also in Chaucers Canterbury Tales: This day in mirth and revel to dispend, / Till on the welkin shone the starres bright. In 1739, a book with the title Hymns and Sacred Poems introduced one for Christmas written by Charles Wesley that began: Hark! how all the welkin rings, / Glory to the King of kings. If that seems a little familiar, it is because 15 years later it reappeared as Hark! the herald-angels sing / Glory to the new born king. |

28 29 October 2004 The Greatest. ALI. Clay comes out to meet Liston And Liston starts to retreat If Liston goes back any further He'll end up in a ringside seat. Clay swings with a left, Clay swings with a right, Look at young Cassius Carry the fight. Liston keeps backing But there's not enough room It's a matter of time. There, Clay lowers the boom. Now Clay swings with a right, What a beautiful swing, And the punch raises the bear, Clear out of the ring. Liston is still rising And the ref wears a frown, For he can't start counting, Till Sonny comes down. Now Liston disappears from view. The crowd is getting frantic, But our radar stations have picked him up. He's somewhere over the Atlantic. Who would have thought When they came to the fight That they'd witness the launching Of a human satellite? Yes, the crowd did not dream When they laid down their money That they would see A total eclipse of the Sonny! I am the greatest! I am so behind today. Important phone call got me out of bed. All of today's energies are going into getting supplies to these kids in the hospital in Iraq. It is amazing that something so simple as a razor can be a source of comfort to our brave troops. They get to the hospital with nothing, and then what? We always ask, now our question as been answered. I hope we get some letter writers too, because Ma is about the worst letter writer there is.

CNO, MCPON Visit GW
Story Number: NNS040420-01
Release Date: 4/20/2004 9:25:00 AM
By Journalist 2nd Class (SW) John Osborne, USS George Washington Public Affairs
USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, At Sea (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Vern Clark and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SS/AW) Terry Scott visited USS George Washington (GW) (CVN 73) in the Arabian Gulf April 17.
It was proof positive that the mission of GW is presence with a purpose, and to provide air power to the ground troops fighting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"I flew halfway around the world for one reason: to look you in the eye and tell you that Im proud of you," Clark told the Sailors who had gathered in the hangar bay. "All the members of the units in this strike group are sending an important message not just to enemies that were facing on the battlefield, but to the whole world, that the United States of America is going to stand up and do what has to be done."
When GW's Commanding Officer Capt. Martin Erdossy introduced Clark, he made no bones about the strides the CNO has made in improving the state of the Navy, Sailors' training and their quality of life, since he took the position almost four years ago. He also pointed out that in Clark's 35 years of service, he has gained the perspective necessary to ensure the Navy's future.
"Adm. Vern Clark has been in command for every grade since he was a lieutenant," Erdossy said. "Now he is in command of the greatest Navy that ever sailed the seven seas. He has not only increased the quality of service to you as his Sailors, but also the operational readiness of our Navy. Hes charted our future. Hes provided clear and precise guidance of where were going to go with our Navy into the 21st century."
During their three-hour visit, Clark attended an operations brief while Scott addressed the chief petty officers (CPO) in the CPO's mess. Then they both addressed the crew during an all hands admiral's call. With every question they answered, every picture they posed for and every hand they shook, they delivered the message that today's U.S. Navy is the most powerful because of its people, and he wanted them to know how much they are counted on daily to maintain America's power.
"I learned a long time ago that we can create the best technology in the world, but it doesnt mean anything if you dont have the men and women who are committed to bring that capability alive," Clark said. "We have a Navy to take credible, persistent combat power to the far corners of the Earth, and to provide options for the President of the United States, anywhere, anytime, around the world, around the clock, without a permission slip. Thats what our business is about."
