Will law silence the church? Bill that would outlaw the Bible and Catechism in Canada passes House
Washington Times ^ | April 2004

Christian leaders in Canada fear that a new law might de facto condemn portions of the Bible as hate literature, an Anglican online service reports.

Bill C-250, which is currently before the Canadian parliament in Ottawa, proposes the proscription of public statements condemning homosexual behavior.

This could lead to a prosecution of the church for teaching that "sexual conduct between people of the same sex is morally wrong," warned the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in a letter to Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, according to Virtuosity Digest, a conservative Anglican online publication.

Janet Buckingham, director of law and public policy for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, said senators told her they are "getting a ton of phone calls and e-mails opposing the bill."

And the bill has not yet passed the Senate!

Different legislation. Ontario Human Rights Board legislation rather than Federal was used . C-250 makes a change to the Constitution by adding "sexual orientation". That's all it does, but it changes things dramatically.

Connie,
God bless you for organizing this. I hope it's not too late, either!

I cannot believe I just found out about it. I will try to be there, if even for just a while. I saw your web page about it--perhaps I can organize some petition in my community, although I won't be able to really get people to go to the rally at this point, I dont' think.

"Agree with those who tie CFR in with the war against religion in general and Christianity in particular."

So do I. Both hate speech laws and CFR relate to the most fundamental of all constitutional rights--the right to free speech. Without that, the others fall away quickly.

For example, thanks to CFR, interest groups would now not be able to purchase commercials to point out a politician's favoring of hate speech laws that have the effect of "outlawing" the Bible, or a politician's favoring of the repeal of the Second Amendment.

All ten are inextricably tied together and they all have been relentlessly chipped away at. The only one that has grown is the one that is not an Amendment at all, but is just a mere "penumbra," the right to privacy.

Valin, would you please ping the CFR list? thanks. :)

Well you better tell these guys then.

Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists

Looks like a lot of Southern Baptist affiliated churches to me. Of course considering the SBC wants to take away Southern from our name now (un-PC apparently) who knows what they'll do next.

I don't know if the numbers exist to support armed rebellion or not. I am certain that the organization needed to make such action effective does not yet exist. I'm not even sure there would be a "civil war". Would those who are pushing for these laws be willing to fight for them? Would the military and police forces be willing to use force in support of such an attempt to force such laws on the nation? This is all quite hypothetical right now. But I think that, if the attempt is made to enact such laws here as are being considered in Canada that the possibility of armed resistance passes from the realm of the hypothetical to the very real. At that point a whole lot of people are going to have to make the decision as to whether liberty is worth fighting for or not and if it is worth fighting for what are they going to do exactly to defend it?

It should also be kept in mind that numbers are less important than organization and timing. The Bolsheviks numbered only a few thousand and came to control a nation of many millions. In our own revolution only about 1/3 of the populace supported the rebellion and nearly the same proportion actively opposed it.

I wonder: if this abomination becomes law in Canada, will the Canadian cultural Left attempt to outlaw the Koran as "hate speech" too?

You know, that little volume that exhorts its readers to kill infidels and calls Jews sons of apes and pigs?

the Torah is hatespeech, the Talmud is hatespeech...

The Koran, however, is the most beautiful composition you'll ever read. (Here's where my tag should be closed)

The sad part is many of the Canadians I know (mostly "easterners", but not necessarily Quebec'ers) truly believe that implying in any form that homosexual behavior is anything but completely normal and acceptable IS hatespeech. They're mostly under 40 and have grown up being taught that homosexuality is normal. Sad.

Among other things, some of which aren't going to be very pleasant. I agree in the long run.

It's simple, tell the Court this is against the Quran and they will bend over backward, (for God knows what).

Actually the Koran also considers homosexual acts an abomination. But I didn't mention it because I am not feeling very favorably disposed towards the practitioners of Islam at the moment.

Note this thread linked below, a sizable percentage of college students are starting to speak out against the liberal monolith:

Yep. Yet those who practice PC (and I understand that's not you) wouldn't include it because Islam is afterall, a religion of peace. Yetch.

Folks, I spoke with some of my Canadian friends tonight. Things look very desperate as far as losing their freedom of religion and other civil liberties. We need to keep putting pressure on the Canadian government to back down, because it's headed south to America next.

Of course not! That would be 'hateful'! (/sarcasm)

(Excellent question and observation!)

Not possible in the People's Kleptocracy of Canada. It is the only country in the world that not only imposes gun control on its citizens, but on its military as well.

Thank you for the most important ping I've ever received. This feels very - prophetic....

If this doesn't inspire both Americans and Canadians to finally throw the socialists out, then nothing ever will.
