Remaining Libyan Nuclear Weapons docked at North Carolina Port

Neighborhood reacts to nuclear weapons

There's no word if the ship carrying Libya's remaining nuclear weapons is still docked at the North Carolina Ports in Wilmington. What it known is that major safety issues have taken place inside the port, and outside as well. Especially in one neighborhood near the port, which is near it all.

A ship pulled into the North Carolina Ports in Wilmington Saturday amid tight security. The top secret cargo inside, officials said, was the remaining equipment associated with Libya's nuclear weapons program.

People in Wilmington are now asking... "Is it safe?"

The duty press officer for the Department of State said, "The United States is taking all necessary measures to make sure the cargo stays safe."

People who live a few blocks near where officials said 500 tons of weapons were docked said it doesn't really shock them.

Johnnie Henagan lives within walking distance of the port. He was watching News six when we broke the story. "News indicated no nuclear material on ship... It was a great sigh of relief," said Henagan.

War historian Wilbur Jones said it's a coincidence this news is public right near the anniversary of the start of the war on terrorism. "Libya has always been apart of axis of evil... now they no longer exist."

State officials wouldn't say how long the ship would be in Wilmington, or where it is headed.

The Dems and Media will spin this as "Bush endangering the lives of US Citizens with rogue nuclear weapons!"

One would have to assume that any nuclear material would wind up at the Savanna River
Site in South Carolina. That being said it makes no sense to dock a ship at Wilmington and truck it down I-95/I-20, the most traveled/congested highways on the east coast.

Much better to dock in Charleston, with a better direct route to the Site as well as having already existing Naval Nuclear Weapons Facility in place.

This announcement may be a diversion

I only wish all the ridiculing and disparaging of Libya would come to a halt. For whatever their reasons, they did the right thing and should be commended for such, not continue to be the recipient of insults.

They're worried about this now ... suppose those weapons had been developed and handed out to al-Qaeda?

The article mentioned equipment associated with Libya's nuclear weapons program. Could be things like centrifuges, etc. BTW, GE Nuclear Energy recently moved their HQ to Wilmington. They already have a nuclear fuel processing facility there.

"Much better to dock in Charleston, with a better direct route to the Site as well as having already existing Naval Nuclear Weapons Facility in place."

I disagree. CD and I briefly discussed this a week or so ago and thought Sunny Point Military Depot would be the site they'd pick. I believed since Wilmington has the GE Global Nuclear Fuels facility and could easily have handled the material, it was a better tradeoff than sending it overland to Aiken, SC.

I don't think it's a diversion, as I don't think Libya's nuclear program was far enough along for them to have obtained quantitative enriched fuels.

I'm confused. All the time people said Saddam had chemical weapons and a nuclear program, and now all the stuff we thought was in Iraq shows up in Libya. And Libya coughs it up as if it were junk cluttering up their garage.

Has anyone at all considered that Saddam might have transferred this stuff to Libya for safekeeping?

"They're worried about this now.."

Knowing their style of reporting, they prolly found two or three who know very little of what's going on to ask. "People" prolly won't include a handfull since GE GNF is within walking distance.

I didn't know about the GE Global Nuclear Fuels facility at Wilmington.
That taken into account I would have to concur with your assessment.

What if this was a terrorist ploy to get the US to bring them the WMDs, right to the US shores.

Our security better be top-notch.

Far as I know, the Libs didn't actually build atomic weapons- they were in the process of developing the facilities to build them. I think the reporter is an idiot.

Just checked the site- the first story says there are some scuds & other junk, plus nuclear development gear, but no nuclear weapons. Whoever wrote the headline for this story didn't read the first one.
