Former Washington Redskins standouts Charles Mann and Art Monk stopped in Richmond yesterday to support legislation requiring that pain medication be given to fetuses being aborted after the first trimester.

An opponent of the legislation called the visit arranged by the bill's sponsor, Del. Richard H. Black, R-Loudoun, a publicity ploy designed to save the legislation.

Charles Mann and Art Monk were always class acts on the field, and are off the field as well. This may not be a repudiation of Roe v. Wade, but it is another salvo fired in defense of life. Maybe, just maybe, the educational impact of this will get some fence-sitters to come down on the correct side.

This is a great tactic - if liberals vote for it, they are acknowledging that the fetus is living and worthy of compassion, which raises the question of why they should be allowed to kill it.

If they vote against it, they are saying that they not only want the baby killed, they want it to suffer horribly.

Former Redskins in defense of life ping! Charles Mann and Art Monk hold news conference in Richmond in support of fetal anesthesia bill. Its called a publicity stunt by the pro-death, excuse me, all together now, pro-choice-of-killing crowd. But, wasn't it a publicity stunt to have celebrities speak out against Vietnam or Iraq, or to have rock stars speak out in favor of enviro-whackism? I guess its only bad when its directed against a woman's "right" to choose...[fill in the blank].

Exactly. Some pro-lifers will say its not enough, and those opposed to it will have to take on the consequences you mentioned. I think the latter is one of the reasons that Del. Richard Black introduced this legislation. Even if it fails this time around, it gets some people to thinking...

Did these former players play during the years of Joe Gibbs? I ask because i know that Gibbs is an extremely devout christian who speaks openly of his faith. I wonder if he played a part in developing these players faith and opinions.

He [CHarles Mann] and [Art] Monk, a former Redskins wide receiver, were teammates in 1992 when the Redskins won the Super Bowl.

Please note: They were also teammates on the Redskins' 1987 NFL championship squad (ranked No. 4 in points scored and No. 6 in points allowed, and led to a record 35 points in the second quarter of their 42-10 triumph over Denver in Super Bowl XXII by QB Doug Williams, who is still black) and 1983 NFC championship sqaud (which set a then-NFL record by scoring 541 points in a season in which they only lost two regular season games, each on Monday Night Football by one point to Green Bay and Dallas). I realize this is not as important as the issue at hand, but in the interest of accuracy (and bolstering Redskin fans' morale as we head into uncharted waters) I just had to add this. Joe Gibbs, Art Monk, and Charles Mann are living proof that nice guys don't necessarily finish last!

GREAT BILL!  Very well thought out and glad to see it's getting some support and publicity.  This is the way to win the abortion battle.

(I will always think of Art Monk as an ex-Eagle, but that's just me...)

Yes. Joe Gibbs was the head coach of the Redskins from 1981-1992. In twelve seasons his teams went to the playoffs eight times, won four NFC championships, and three Super Bowl championships. Art Monk was drafted a year or so before Gibbs came aboard, but he is definitely reflective of the type of character that Gibbs preferred of his players. Charles Mann was drafted during his tenure.

Bennet Greenberg, lobbyist for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, said the news conference was an "obvious publicity stunt."

How hilariously hypocritical--a liberal denouncing celebrities at a news conference as a publicity stunt.

Funny, I always picture him in the green and white of the J-E-T-S!!! ;>) I'd like to see some current Christian athletes get aboard on issues such as this. I have a new-found respect for Jon Kina after his Christian cap stand. In today's media-saturated culture, we need these people to come out and be role models for kids who don't always have the best and brightest ones at home raising them, or at least to show them that being good and moral is 'cool' and acceptable.

Hey, c'mon now, we all know that Sean Penn is an expert on WMD and BarbAra Streisand is an expert on environmentalist issues and spelling!

"I am against abortion. I am pro-life. I don't stutter when I say that. I don't bite my tongue," Mann said.

Compare this with President Bush's classic line, "I don't do nuance" and John Kerry's definitive statement that, that...um, he's for, no, he was for the way it was written, but not how it played out, um, but he is for um, um, let's see, oh yeah, homosexual marriage, no, civil unions...

Why is it that people with a faith-based outlook know what they stand for, while others hem-and-haw? I guess that question answers itself.

IMO the one sure thing that will end Roe v. Wade will be if proof of a "gay" gene is found. Short of that I'm afraid that it will remain in place, to our national shame.
